Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.

More than half of annual rainfall occurs in summer season in Korea due to its climate condition and geographical location. A frequency analysis is mostly adopted for designing hydraulic structure under the such concentrated rainfall condition. Among the various distributions, univariate Gumbel distribution has been routinely used for rainfall frequency analysis in Korea. However, the distributional changes in extreme rainfall have been globally observed including Korea. More specifically, the univariate Gumbel distribution based rainfall frequency analysis is often fail to describe multimodal behaviors which are mainly influenced by distinct climate conditions during the wet season. In this context, we purposed a Gumbel mixture distribution based rainfall frequency analysis with a Bayesian framework, and further the results were compared to that of the univariate. It was found that the proposed model showed better performance in describing underlying distributions, leading to the lower Bayesian information criterion (BIC) values. The mixed Gumbel distribution was more robust for describing the upper tail of the distribution which playes a crucial role in estimating more reliable estimates of design rainfall uncertainty occurred by peak of upper tail than single Gumbel distribution. Therefore, it can be concluded that the mixed Gumbel distribution is more compatible for extreme frequency analysis rainfall data with two or more peaks on its distribution.

The purpose of this study was the assessment of the accuracy of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), a rainfall data source derived from satellite images, for evaluation of its applicability to use in ungauged or inaccessible areas. The study area was the overall area of the Korean peninsula divided into six regions. Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) rainfall data from the Korean Meteorological Administration and IMERG satellite rainfall were used. Their average correlation coefficient was 0.46 for a 1-h temporal resolution, and it increased to 0.69 for a 24-h temporal resolution. The IMERG data quantitatively estimated less than the rainfall totals from ground gauges, and the bias decreased as the temporal resolution was decreased. The correlation coefficients of the two rainfall events, which had relatively greater rainfall amounts, were 0.68 and 0.69 for a 1-h temporal resolution. Additionally, the spatial distributions of the ASOS and IMERG data were similar to each other. The study results showed that the IMERG data were very useful in the assessment of the hydro-meteorological characteristics of ungauged or inaccessible areas. In a future study, verification of the accuracy of satellite-derived rainfall data will be performed by expanding the analysis periods and applying various statistical techniques.

There are 109 A class rivers in Japan. One purpose of river management is to reduce the flooding. For this purpose, government provides the information to public, as flood forecasting, rainfall forecasting and estimate the runoff magnitude to avoid the flood and inundation. In this paper, we introduce current situation of flood forecasting and rainfall forecasting in Japan, and we describe how to use the information of flood forecasting and rainfall forecasting in conjunction with current strategy for river management.
We present here, some of the studies carried for estimation of rainfall over land and oceanic regions in and around South Korea. We use active and passive microwave measurements from TRMM - TMI and Precipitation Radar (PR) respectively during a typhoon even named - RUSA that took place during 30 Aug. 2002. We have followed due approach by Yao at. all (2002) and examined the performance of their algorithm using two main predictor variable, named as Scattering Index (SI) and Polarization Corrected Brightness Temperature (PCT) while using TMI data. The rainfall rate estimated using PCT and SI shows some under-estimation as compared to the AWS rainfall products from the PR in common area of overlap. A larger database thus would be used in future. To establish a new rain rate algorithm over Korean region based on the present case study.

This paper concerns a flow control method that can reduce rainwater containing non-point contamination accumulated on road surfaces during initial rainfall. In early rainfall, non-point pollutants are blocked from entering rivers and oceans and flow to sewage treatment plants. Afterwards, rainwater, which has been removed from the non-point pollution source through jet lag, is safely flowing into the river.

Most distributed models have been developed for data interchange between model for hydrological analysis and GIS(Geographic Information System). And some interface systems between them have been developed to operate the model conveniently. This study is about developing integrated system between model and GIS not coupled system based on file interchange or interface system. In this study, HyGIS-GRM which is integrated system between GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) which is physically based distributed rainfall-runoff model and HyGIS(Hydro Geographic Information System) have been developed. HyGIS-GRM can carry out all the processes from preparing input data to appling them to model in the same system, and this operation environment can improve the efficiency of running the model and analyzing modeling results. HyGIS-GRM can provide objective modeling environment through establishing the process of integrated operation of GIS and distributed model, and we can obtain fundamental technologies for developing integrated system between GIS and water resources model.

In South Korea, seasonal, local and temporal climatic characteristics are variable in rainfall patterns. To design or assess the reliability of hydrosystem, information about the rainfall event under consideration is important. In this process, the complete description of a design storm involves the specification of rainfall duration, depth, and its temporal pattern. Generally, to use an appropriate temporal pattern for a design storm is of great importance in the design and evaluation of hydrological safety for hydrosystem. For purpose of selecting of factors affecting the occurrence of rainfall patterns, Huff's dimensionless method was executed and examined by statistical contingency tables analysis through which the inter-dependence of the occurrence frequency of rainfall patterns with respect to geographical location, rainfall duration and depth, and seasonality is investigated. This analysis result can be used to establish flood policies and to design or assess the reliability of hydrosystem.
This study aims to elucidate the relative importance of geological characteristics, soil slope, and rainfall intensity in relation to soil erosion. To this end, indoor rainfall simulation experiments were carried out under different conditions of rainfall intensities, soil slope, and geological characteristics. The test results show that the factors affect soil erosion in the order of soil slope > rainfall intensity > organic content in the soil. Erosion rates were proportional to rainfall, and increase with increasing clay content. Therefore, the soil erosion rate increases strongly with increasing organic content and clay content. The results show that the soil erosion rate in areas of metamorphic rocks shows a marked increase compared with areas of steep slope and sedimentary rocks. These results indicate that the geological characteristics to produce soil are closely related to sedimentation before and after erosion, providing basic information for the development of models to predict soil erosion rates.
This study aimed to assess the causality of different climate variables on the production of whole crop maize (Zea mays L.; WCM) in the central inland region of the Korea. Furthermore, the effect of these climate variables was also determined by looking at direct and indirect pathways during the stages before and after silking. The WCM metadata (n = 640) were collected from the Rural Development Administration's reports of new variety adaptability from 1985-2011 (27 years). The climate data was collected based on year and location from the Korean Meteorology Administration's weather information system. Causality, in this study, was defined by various cause-and-effect relationships between climatic factors, such as temperature, rainfall amount, sunshine duration, wind speed and relative humidity in the seeding to silking stage and the silking to harvesting stage. All climate variables except wind speed were different before and after the silking stage, which indicates the silking occurred during the period when the Korean season changed from spring to summer. Therefore, the structure of causality was constructed by taking account of the climate variables that were divided by the silking stage. In particular, the indirect effect of rainfall through the appropriate temperature range was different before and after the silking stage. The damage caused by heat-humidity was having effect before the silking stage while the damage caused by night-heat was not affecting WCM production. There was a large variation in soil surface temperature and rainfall before and after the silking stage. Over 350 mm of rainfall affected dry matter yield (DMY) when soil surface temperatures were less than 22℃ before the silking stage. Over 900 mm of rainfall also affected DMY when soil surface temperatures were over 27℃ after the silking stage. For the longitudinal effects of soil surface temperature and rainfall amount, less than 22℃ soil surface temperature and over 300 mm of rainfall before the silking stage affected yield through over 26℃ soil surface temperature and less than 900 mm rainfall after the silking stage, respectively.
