  • Hanging sleepers are frequently observed in the ballasted track with the rail of high rigidity. These hanging sleepers at the high speed line could cause such large dynamic force compared to those at the conventional line. This dynamic force would, in turn, deteriorate train running stability as well as riding comfort, and accelerate irregularity of track and failure of track materials, leading to a sharp increase in track maintenance cost. When the wheel-rail contact spring exhibits nonlinear behavior and some components of the system like hanging sleeper exhibit bi-linear behaviors, an effective analytical method is proposed for train-track interactions. The verification of the present method is carried out comparing numerical results by the present method and those by Ono's method of RTRI.

  • Recently, there have been various problems aroused on the domestic infrastructures as the domestic cities become old. Accordingly, the national concerns grow on the urban railway and the related structures, which brings the national interests are brought on the research on the maintenance and rehabilitation of the old infrastructures. The underground structure of urban railway are checked with the strain gages or fiber brag grating (FBG) sensors on the railway. However, these methods are known to have resolution limitations on the investigations of the specified abnormal section. Therefore, the applicability of the Brillouin Optical Correlation Domain Analysis (BOCDA) based distributed fiber optic sensor system on the railway was evaluated in this study. The constructed BOCDA fiber optic sensor system shows high resolution of 10, 20, 50, 100 cm and capability of continuous monitoring on overall or specified section within 2 km range. The applicability evaluation was performed on the 250 m distribution of fiber optic sensors abandoned railway for continuous monitoring. The applicability of the system on the specified area was evaluated with wheel load testing. As a result, data loss tends to increase with the reduction of spatial resolution from 1.0 m to 0.1 m. Even though the measuring speed is reduced with lower spatial resolution, data accuracy increases on the location and deformation. The system can be applicable to various structures if the proper distribution method is invented later.

  • The objective of this research is to design the roller rig for the maintenances of high-speed train bogies operated on the tracks. Roller rigs have been studied and researched to develop the faster, safer and more efficient railway system. It is to reduce the time of testing vehicles and to make as wide a range of tests available as possible. Therefore, it is very important issue to check and evaluate the dynamic responses of high-speed train after several years of operation. This paper presents a study on the conceptual design and dynamic model to develop the roller rig for the routine maintenances of high-speed trains bogies with maximum speed of 350km/h. ANSYS was used to analyze the wheel/roller's contact behavior of driving axle and ADAMS was used to verify and analyze the dynamic behaviors of roller rig.

  • The transition area between a bridge and an earthwork is one of the weakest area of track because of the track geometry deterioration caused unequal settlement of backfill of abutment. In case of a ballastless track, the approach slab could be installed to prevent such a phenomenon. But, if there is occurred the inclined displacement on the approach slab by a settlement of the foundation or formation, the track is also under the inclined displacement. And this defect causes reducing the running stability of a vehicle, the riding comfort of passengers, and increasing the track deteriorations by excessive impact force acting on the track. In this study, parametric studies were performed to investigate the displacement limit on the approach slab to avoid such problems. The length and the amount of unequal settlement of approach slab were adopted as parameter for numerical analysis considering vehicle-track interaction. Car body accelerations, variations of wheel force, stresses in rail, and uplift forces induced on fastener clip were investigated. From the result, resonable settlement limit on the end of an approach slab according to slab length was suggested.

  • In this study, a vehicle dynamic analysis and roller rig test were performed to evaluate the applicability of a suspensionless composite bogie to railway vehicles. A vehicle dynamic analysis was carried out under different rubber bushing stiffness values. The stiffness of the rubber bushing that plays a role in guiding wheel sets was varied in the range of 10-100 MN/m, in 10-MN/m steps. Based on the results, the composite bogie with a rubber bushing stiffness of more than 40 MN/m satisfied the design requirements. In addition, a rubber bushing with a stiffness of 81 MN/m was fabricated, and a roller rig test was performed. Based on the test results, the vehicle equipped with the composite bogie had a critical speed of 363 km/h, which agreed with the simulation result within an error of 10%.

  • Impact factor of concrete and ballast track which has been used in Korea railway was applied to equation (1+0.513V/100) from AREA. As the use of this equation, overcapacity of track design might be occurred. Therefore, this study compared impact of ballast track (well, bad) and concrete track (sleeper embeded system, rail floating and sleeper floating) by field test to analyzing dynamic effect of track structure's characterstic and wheel load on service line. In addition, it suggested a method to generate reasonable impact factor on each track type.

  • As the ambient vibration test (AVT) of railway bridges has a limited range of speed, it has a limitation in examining the dynamic behavior of bridges accordingto speed. Thus, in order to analyze the correlation between the speed of a train passing over a bridge and the bridge's dynamic response, we conducted a speed-increasing experiment using a real diesel locomotive. To analyze the acceleration response characteristics, we attached seven vertical accelerometers at equal intervals throughout the entire section of the bridge except the supports, and one horizontal accelerometer to the middle span. Linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) were installed at the bridge's center in both vertical and horizontal directions to investigate the vertical and horizontal behaviors. The test train was statically loaded at the center and at the end of the bridge. And its speed was increased from 5 km/h to 90 km/h. With data obtained from the experiment, the vibration level was evaluated in each direction by the filtering frequency, and the level of horizontal vibration was examined in comparison with vertical vibration. The displacement and wheel load variation was analyzed by speed.

  • Due to the absence of design guidelines for elevated light-rail structures in Korea, most elevated light-rail structures have been designed and constructed based on the design codes of conventional railway bridges and on the codes recommended by foreign vehicle manufacturers. This is the main reason why most elevated light-rail structures are massive or over-designed or poorly constructed economically. In this paper, the authors carried out field tests to analyze the braking forces caused by braking a train running at speeds of 50km/h, 60km/h, and 70km/h, acting on the elevated structures of rubber-wheeled Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains. The authors also briefly describe the analyzed results of the braking force acting on the substructures of elevated light-rail structures. The test-results presented here in this paper can be referenced when establishing design guidelines or standards for elevated structures of LRT systems.

  • The railway turnout system is one of the most important systems that set train routes. Turnout system integrity should be guaranteed for robust train operation. To diagnose the turnout system status, LVDT and accelerometers are installed on a turnout system in a high speed line. The LVDT and accelerometers produce signals containing physical meaning of the turnout systems. The LVDT produces the displacement of the rail gauge and vibration when point moving or a train passes on turnout systems and the accelerometer produces impact forces induced by wheel sets. We performed data extraction from the measured signals and parameterized the extracted signals into meaningful quantities. The parameters are used for classifying whether the turnout status is normal. We proposed two methods for the classification, one uses probabilistic distribution and the other artificial neuron networks. The probabilistic distribution is used for the parameter being classified by the quantities and the artificial neuron networks for the form classification. Finally, we show how to learn the normal status of a turnout system.

  • The rail surface defects which are generated on repeated rolling contact fatigue are getting increased according to high speed, high density, and minimum weight. In addition, Increasing noise and vibration are affected by these also impact load generated as well. Because of this phenomenon, more serious and critical damages were occurred. In fact, in order to control them, the rail grinding amount in Korea. This study evaluated how depth of hardening on rail surface is formed and suggested optimal rail grinding amount by RCF(rolling contact fatigue) test with generated contact pressure between KTX wheel and UIC60 rail by applying FEM analysis. Therefore, the amount was generated approximately 0.2mm/20MGT to maintain integrity of rail surface by getting rid of depth of hardening on rail according to rail accumulated passing tonnage.
