Application of WAK test to Identify Unstable Concrete Sleeper

  • In this study a new detection technique based on WAK is introduced that can be used for identifying unstable concrete sleeper installed in ballast by triggering activated wave on the sleeper surface. If a gap exists immediately below the concrete sleeper, static stiffness can be lower than stable case's stiffness. The concrete sleeper is assumed as a single degree of freedom system (SDOF). The static stiffness K can be obtained by iteratively calculated mass (m), stiffness (k) and damping coefficient (c) of SDOF system. Those coefficients are used to specify the ballast condition such as a gap between the sleeper and ballast. Typical test results using a small sleeper model test are summarized and explained for proof of effectiveness of the WAK test for checking unstable condition of the sleeper.

  • The vibration-attenuation was quantitatively compared by 3-Dimensional finite element analysis using ABAQUS, with respect to the change of the type of trackbed systems. Most common trackbed materials, including ballast and concrete were applied to the track structure, and the train-speed was set as 300km/h as Korea Train eXpress (KTX). The result of current study revealed that the ballast showed the most effective material for the vibration attenuation.

  • The function of subgrade in the railway is to support track load on the subgrade as well as train load. Unlike the traditional railway, the uppermost subgrade layer in the Gyeongbu high speed railway was constructed as the reinforced road bed. The reinforced road bed comprises sub-ballast in the upper part and grade ballast in the lower part. The filling material such as soil and rocks in the subgrade can be settled by consolidation of original ground, compression due to self weight, plastic displacement due to train operation, and unequal settlement due to embankment material or improper compaction, therefore many efforts have been given for sufficient compaction and use of proper filling materials in the construction stage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the deformation state of subgrade in the Gyeongbu high speed railway. The investigation on the subgrade settlement was performed by choosing representative sections suspected to be settled based on the previous GPR test results and track maintenance history, measuring the settlement for some time period after installing settlement measuring instruments on and under the reinforced road bed. and analyzing the long-term subgrade settlement data from monitoring system which was installed at the construction stage of the high speed railway.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a criterion of ballast aggregate size distribution for paved track. The parameters considered in this study were different types of particle size distribution. Then the analysis for analyzing compressive and flexural strength, physical characteristics of aggregate, and the ballast box test were performed. In the test result of the physical characteristic performed by the ballast box test, the bearing capacity was measured lower than the expected value because of its boundary conditions. Among four types of ballast aggregate, type B was selected as one of best candidate distribution because of its bearing capacity, strength, development and economics.

  • The ballast, one of track components, plays an essential role as intermedium in transmitting train load to subgrade safely, and the deterioration of ballast directly effects the growth of track irregularity. In this study, we determined the main factor of ballast deterioration was miniature of ballast gravel caused MTT(Multiple Tie Tamper) works and accumulated traffic loads. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, we carried out field test through track construction for test and the model test simulating the actual operation environment, have done a comparative analysis with the sample's result(crushing rate) of high-speed railroad running actually.

  • As for track maintenance, Seoul Metro executes track bed improvement project from obsolete ballast track bed to concrete track bed in order to achieve maintenance free and to extend its LCC(Life Cycle Costing). When it comes to obsolete ballast track bed withdrawal task, now it is done solely relying on man power and ballast inhalation vehicle. In this paper, I suggested ballast cleaning system with lighter equipment to change manpower withdrawal tasks to mechanized ones. It is expected to improve work efficiency and economic benefits by applying track excavator having variable wheels and container etc, which is able to keep on the site.

  • 본 연구에서는 선로상의 소규모 유류오염 도상자갈을 대상으로 펜톤산화를 적용하였다. 이를 위해 현장의 오염도상자갈을 채취하여 실험실에서 주요인자들에 대한 실험을 수행하였으며, 이 후 소규모로 오염된 역사 내 선로에서 원위치 펜톤산화의 적용가능성을 확인하였다. 그 결과, 실험실 조건에서는 0.1 mol Fe/L $H_2O_2$의 조건으로 도상자갈 잔류 TPH 농도를 약 1,000 mg/kg-ballast 수준으로 낮출 수 있었다. 그러나 원위치 현장적용에서는 자갈궤도의 배수특성으로 인해 $H_2O_2$의 상당량이 충분히 반응하지 못하고 하부로 배출되어 펜톤반응의 현장적용성 향상을 위한 추가적인 연구가 요구된다.

철도부지 오염도상자갈의 건식 정화 기술 성능 연구 (Study of the Performance of a Dry Cleaning Method for Polluted Ballast Gravel of Railroad Fields)

  • 철도부지의 도상자갈은 윤활유, 중금속 등으로 오염된 경우가 많다. 이에 본 연구에서는 오염된 자갈표면의 오염물질을 물리적으로 제거하는 오염도상자갈의 건식 정화 기술 성능을 알아보고자 하였다. 오염도상자갈 표면에 경도가 높은 금강사 연마재를 압축공기를 이용하여 분사할 수 있는 오염자갈 정화 장치를 제작하고, 여기에 오염자갈을 투입하여, 처리 시간을 1~10분까지 다양하게 변화시키면서 도상자갈의 석유계총탄화수소와 중금속 등의 정화 효율을 알아보았다. 석유계총탄화수소 제거 효율은 기관차 정차장에서 포집한 차량 윤활유 오염자갈은 70-80%로 다소 높은 반면에, 분기기에서 포집한 분기기 윤활유 오염자갈은 40-60%로 비교적 낮았다. 중금속 제거 효율은 구리와 납이 90% 이상으로 높은 반면에 니켈과 아연은 65-80%로 비교적 낮았다. 실험 결과 건식 자갈 정화 기술은 오염자갈의 처리에 효율적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • State of the German high speed railway slab track were investigated. The Permanent Way consisting of rails and sleepers laid on ballast is a technically and economically viable solution. After two decades of targeted research and development activities Slab Track turned out to be a reasonable option on special fields.

  • Ballasted track is constructed in consideration of the maintenance. The application time and frequency of MTT(Multiple Tie Tamper) and BS(Ballast Cleaner) depend on track geometry measurements. This paper presents the application of Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD), and Portable Ballast Sampler (PBS) to evaluate the effects of track geometry due to substructure deterioration and to build a reliable substructure evaluation system.
