The railway service in the Seoul metropolitan area is facing variety of l changes such as extension of service coverage, new construction, and introduction of express service which in turn causes changes on demands. The demand affects train operation characteristics (frequency of service, train formation) as well as on the congestion rate which is one of the major evaluation index in metropolitan area user service. For the efficient operation of the train, the relationship among the minimization of fleet number, operating cost, and service level has been analyzed. Using the Powersim, which is a system dynamics (System Dynamics) simulation program for realizing optimized simulation for train-formation, this paper identified that some stations of Gyeong-bu line exceeded limit congestion rate(150%) of a fleet already that means it is best to maintain current condition of the line; however, the Gyeong-in line and the Gwa-chon line showed no excess of the limit congestion rate so that it is possible to reduce 2-4 fleets of train for efficient operation. In addition, in case of Jang-hang line between Cheon-an and Sin-chang, a train consisting of 10 fleets provides services which is same formation of train for Gyeong-bu line. This study proved that the congestion rate will not rise greatly with only 4 fleets of a train for the service in Jang-hang line, and it is considered that a study for shuttle service between Cheon-an and Sin-chang is necessary.
Typical composite girder has been composed with conventional concrete deck and steel girder. Recently, ultrahigh-performance-concrete (UHPC) deck is proposed in order to enhance durability and reduce weight of deck as well as to increase stiffness and strength of the composite girder. This study investigates that a headed stud is still compatible as a shear connector for the UHPC deck and steel girder composite beam. Twelve push-out specimens are prepared to evaluate the static strength of stud shear connectors embedded in the UHPC deck. The test program proves that the static strength of the stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC well meets with design codes described in AASHTO LRFD. Chosen experimental variables are aspect ratio of height to diameter of stud, thickness of deck and thickness of concrete cover over the head of stud. From the test program, aspect ratio and cover thickness are investigated to mitigate the regulations of the existing design codes. The minimum aspect ratio and the minimum cover thickness given in AASHTO LRFD are four and 50mm, respectively. This limitation hinders to lower the thickness of the UHPC deck. The results of the experiment program give that the aspect ratio and the cover thickness can be lower down to three and 25mm, respectively. Eurocode-4 regulates characteristic relative slip at least 6mm. However, test results show that stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC provide the characteristic relative slip only about 4mm. Therefore, another measures to increase ductility of stud should be prepared.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of train-induced end rotation of simple supported track girder on the performance of a direct fixation track system (DFTS) in Yeongjong grand bridge. In this study, the influences of deflection of a DFTS and track girder on dynamic rail-track girder interaction forces for the track girder ends currently employed in airport express lines were assessed by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along the service lines. Therefore, the dynamic displacement of rail and track girder and the fastener stress on the center and ends sections of DFTS were measured for two different trains (AREX and KTX) running in Yeongjong grand bridge. A three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) model using the time-history function based on the design wheel load was used to predict the train-induced track and track girder displacement, and the FEA and field test results were compared. The analytical results reproduced the experimental results well within about 3-7% difference in the values. Therefore, the FEA model of DFTS on track girder is considered to provide sufficiently reliable FEA results in the investigation of the behavior of DFTS. Using the analytical and experimental results, the influence of train-induced end rotation of simple supported track girder on the interaction behavior of rail and track girder installed on a simple supported track girder ends, i.e., upward displacement of rail-track girder and the fastener stress, was investigated. It was found that the train-induced end rotation effect of track girder was not significantly affected by the upward displacement of rails and the fastener stresses of track girder ends. Further, the interaction behavior of rail and track girder were similar to or less than that of the general railway bridge deck ends, nevertheless the vertical displacement of track was higher than that of conventional DFTS on the general railway bridge. From the results, the dynamic responses of the DFTS on track girder ends were not significantly affected by the safety and stability of DFTS ends.

This In the railway signaling system, applications of axle counter in addition to track circuit goes on increasing for detecting train position. Consequently, this paper compares sensor methods of axle counter with between geo-magnetism method and proximity sensor method. And it presents differences and results, to improve reliabilities of train detection and axle counting. Also, this article presents an applied result which is based on field experience, with regard to installation, considering attachment condition of sensor part for accurate axle counting. This study acquires expandability that is able to perform not only axle counting function but also various other functions (direction detection of train, speed detection of train, and so on). It was a result of a change of design in order to judge phase difference of sensors, to improve reliability of axle counting. Furthermore, it does not subordinate to characteristics (type, weight of train). And it is confirmed that the omission of axle counting was not occurred in 350km/h. This was the result of Lab test after the construction of transfer equipment of trial axle and Test Bed for axle counting. Both of them are self-productions. Through this, it prepares foundation which is able to apply not only to train detection but also to speed of passing trains, formation number of trains, detector locking condition - when the train passes the section of switch point, and level crossing devices. Furthermore, it would be judged to contribute safety train operation if proximity sensor method applies to the whole railway signaling system from now on.

To cope with the increased demand on the intra-city transportation by urban rails, the introduction of the light rail transit (LRT) systems has been expedited in Korea due to the possible reduction of both the development and operation costs from adopting LRT systems. The LRT systems have so far been designed, constructed and operated based on the corresponding law and regulations. It has been conceived that fully complying with the existing guidelines may incur some extra costs on LRT. In addition, the present design of LRT stations seems to require unnecessarily long flow of passengers traffic, particularly for disabled people. In this paper, as an approach to solving the aforementioned issues, an introduction of 'LRT stops' has been studied where the stops are similar in concept to bus stops and are intended to replace the stations of a bigger scale in general. Specifically, necessary guidelines for design have been developed by modifying the existing ones to be fit with LRT stops. A design case was also presented to evaluate them. The effective use of the results reported here will provide an opportunity of cost reduction in connection with the construction and operation, and also let people benefit from convenient use of rails, thereby resulting in enhanced transportation welfare.

Many people have been recognized that the Korean Peninsula is no longer safe area from the earthquake by the recent earthquakes occurred in the country. The earthquakes that occurred at Pohang and Gyeongju appeared differently from them considered in the seismic design and researches on the seismic design method have been also conducted by many researchers. Studies on seismic loads are mainly focused on existing superstructures, and research involving them has been actively carried out in reality. However, paper regarding structural stability of reinforcement from seismic load such as soil-nails, rock-bolts, ground anchors which were constructed to ensure stability of serviced structure have been published rarely. In this study, ground anchor been effected by static load and seismic load which is settled in the weathered rock is analyzed. Results for static load are obtained from field test and seismic load is from numerical analysis. In this study, the behavioral characteristics of the ground anchor were analyzed by numerical analysis in case of seismic loading based on the result of the in-situ tensile test of the ground anchor settled weathered rock. As a result, settlement of concrete block due to application of tension force for ground anchor occurred as well as following loss of axial force for ground anchor. Also, as bond length and period of seismic load are longer, increasement of displacement is greater.
Two test methods, nonrepetitive plate loading test (NPLT) and repetitive plate loading test (RPLT) are being used to control the quality of compaction through the evaluation of the stiffness of subgrade soils in the Korea railway industry. Subgrade reaction modulus ($k_{30}$) from the NPLT and strain modulus ($E_v$) from the RPLT are the index values to check them. The methods have similar aspects, but they differ in the modulus evaluation method, the numbers of loading stage, termination procedures, etc. This paper analyses the differences of the two test methods and evaluates the relationship between subgrade reaction modulus and strain modulus. In order to develop the relationship, total 22 tests were performed including the NPLT and the RPLT at the 6 original grounds, and 5 upper or lower subgrades in Kyungbu High Speed Railway II stage construction sites. According to the soil conditions, the relationship between subgrade reaction modulus and strain modulus was proposed with corrections by considering strain states, mean confining pressures, and Poisson's ratio.
Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in bout 400 km section in 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350 km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. In spite of little study for this wetting collapse problem, it has been recognized that the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills exhibit low compressibility at low pressures, but there can be significant compression at high pressures due to grain crushing (Marachi et al. 1969, Nobari and Duncan 1972, Noorany et al. 1994, Houston et al. 1993, Wu 2004). The characteristics of compression of fill materials depend on a number of factors such as soil/rock type, as-compacted moisture, density, stress level and wetting condition. Because of the complexity of these factors, it is not easy to predict quantitatively the amount of compression without extensive tests. Therefore, in this research I carried out the wetting collapse tests, focusing on various soil/rock type, stress levels, wetting condition more closely.

This paper presents the development of simulation system on EPB shield TBM Hood operation. In recent, EPB shield TBM is widely used in the tunnel construction. Since the hood system of the EPB shield TBM is most important to excavate the tunnel, it is necessary to perform the simulation of hood system to investigate the design and operation parameters prior to tunnel construction. In order to carry out this study, the scaled simulation system was designed and developed. The model tests were performed to verify the developed system. During the simulation, the earth pressures developed in the chamber during tunnelling were measured to evaluate the operation technique. The test results obtained by the developed simulation system show clearly the similar behaviour of TBM hood compared with the field data. It was also found that the ground loss during tunnelling is dependent on the change of earth pressure in chamber. Therefore, the simulation system developed in this study will be very useful to evaluate the operation technique of the TBM hood prior to tunnel construction. In addition, this system will be applied in a various condition of ground to get the operating information.
