  • Low-rank matrix decomposition has shown its capability in many applications such as image in-painting, de-noising, background reconstruction and defect detection etc. In this paper, we consider the texture background of rail track images and the sparse foreground of the defects to construct a low-rank matrix decomposition model with block sparsity for defect inspection of rail tracks, which jointly minimizes the nuclear norm and the 2-1 norm. Similar to ADM, an alternative method is proposed in this study to solve the optimization problem. After image decomposition, the defect areas in the resulting low-rank image will form dark stripes that horizontally cross the entire image, indicating the preciselocations of the defects. Finally, a two-stage defect extraction method is proposed to locate the defect areas. The experimental results of the two datasets show that our algorithm achieved better performance compared with other methods.

  • Main characteristic in railroad is the guided movement of the wheel by the track through a metal-to-metal contact, conferring to the rail vehicle a single degree of freedom. There are defects such as head check, shelling, corrugation, squats etc in surface of the rail by interface between the wheel and rail. These defects bring about reducing the life-cycle of rails and track components and increasing noises. In case of bad conditions, it is possible to happen to full-scale accident such as derailment. Recently, the track capacity has been increased for increasing speed and operation efficiency. So, maintenance and indirect cost have been increased. Currently, a coating method of rail construction is proposed by using the ceramics in Korea. Rails are used as the earth in electrical railroad systems. Currently traction return current is flowed through wheels of trains. In case of rails coated, problems are caused in the contact power between wheel and coating material of spray. In this paper, electric model is presented in the AT feeding method. In case of rails coated, electric model is presented. Also, standard resistance of the ceramic is demonstrated by contact power between wheel and coating material of spray.

  • The rail surface defects which are generated on repeated rolling contact fatigue are getting increased according to high speed, high density, and minimum weight. In addition, Increasing noise and vibration are affected by these also impact load generated as well. Because of this phenomenon, more serious and critical damages were occurred. In fact, in order to control them, the rail grinding amount in Korea. This study evaluated how depth of hardening on rail surface is formed and suggested optimal rail grinding amount by RCF(rolling contact fatigue) test with generated contact pressure between KTX wheel and UIC60 rail by applying FEM analysis. Therefore, the amount was generated approximately 0.2mm/20MGT to maintain integrity of rail surface by getting rid of depth of hardening on rail according to rail accumulated passing tonnage.

  • Steel bearing balls are important component in machines having moving parts. In this paper we describe a vision-based automatic inspection system designed for sensing defects on the surface of steel bearing balls. The system has a camera looking down over a rail on which balls roll. Two mirrors are installed at both sides of the rail so that the side parts of a ball can be well inspected. The entire ball surface can be sufficiently seen by taking three images at $120^{\circ}$ rotation interval. Defects are detected by thresholding the difference image between an image captured and the reference image of a good ball.

  • In present, KTX's wheel is worn inevitably according to the interaction with rail in service. It was analyzed by wearing type, damage type and wheel reprofiling cycle on the running surface. As a result, damage on the running surface is main cause to reprofile the wheel. Wearing type of wheel is normal and it hasn't reprofiled according to normal wheel wear. As a follow-up result of the whee] defects on the running surface, if the defects size is well managed by periodical inspection, it would be efficient to increase the wheel life.

  • The distribution of current in the conductors influenced by the armature geometry and velocity is an important parameter for determining performance of an electromagnetic launcher(EML). the electric current in the early launching stage tends to flow on the outer surfaces of the conductors, resulting in very high local electric current density. However, the tendency for current to concentrate on the surface is driven by the velocity skin effect later in launching stage. The high current density produces high local heating and, consequently, increases armature wear which causes several defects on EML system. This paper investigates the effects of rail/armature geometry on current density distribution, launcher inductance gradient (L'), and contact force. Three geometrical parameters are used here to characterize the railgun system. These are the ratio of contact length to root length, relative position of contact leading edge to root trailing edge, and the ratio of rail overhang to the rail height. The distribution of current density, L', contact force between various configurations of the armature and the rail are analyzed and compared by using the EMAP3D program.

  • As rail steel at a crossing area must undergo much higher loading than those at regular railway, Mn-containing casting steel is normally used for its high load-carrying capability and reduced wear rate. However, as these Mn-containing casting steel is tend to have casting defects, manufacturing cost to produce defect-free Mn-containing casting steel becomes quite expensive. Therefore, in order to investigate the possibilities of replacing expensive Mn-containing casting steel with a mild steel with a surface build-up using a Mn-alloyed steel electrode.

  • Multi-pass shape drawing is used to manufacture long products of arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. This process allows smooth surface finishes and closely controlled dimensions of the cross-sectional shape. Tube shape drawing for hollow type products provides material savings and weight reduction. The intermediate die shapes are very important in multi-pass tube shape drawing. In the current paper, the design method for the intermediate dies in a tube shape drawing process is developed using a die offset for corner filling (DOCF) method. Underfill defects are related to the radial velocity distribution of each divided section in the deformation zone. The developed intermediate die shape design was applied to the two-pass tube shape drawing with fixed mandrel for manufacturing a hollow linear motion (LM) guide rail. The proposed design method led to uniform and steady metal flow at each divided section. FE-simulations and experiments were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in multi-pass tube shape drawing process.

  • Very big springback in advanced high strength steel(AHSS) sheets invokes undesired shape defects, which can be eliminated by the tool surface correction method or the forming process control method. Since the springback reduction by controlling the forming process is limited, in this study, the die correction method which finds die correction from the relationship between die design variable and springback is introduced to achieve springback reduction and is applied to the automotive side rail to reduce the springback of 75.8% within the assembly limit of 1 mm.

  • CWR technology is generally believed to contribute to the increase of train speed and bring a variety of significant advantages, such as the decrease in track works, noise and vibration as well as the improvement of passenger comfort. In CWR technology, welding is considered to be one of the most important element technologies. Among the various welding methods, gas pressure welding is the most frequently used in vicinity of train line station since the operation is simple and the instruments are not heavy. The gas pressure welding is constructed exactly by good manual book on which simple and excellent welding methods is written and has the same performance as raw material. But this can be poor in the variety of the processing of rail end surface to be welded, the control of oxyacetylene flame and axil compressive force. This study tries to describe the characteristics of gas pressure welding, defect-causing factors and preventive counterplan of defects
