  • Among the interplanetary shock (IP shock)s observed by ACE spacecraft at 1AU during 1997 to 2000, we have selected 31 IP shocks which had triggered the interplanetary type II radio bursts detected by the WIND spacecraft while those shocks were leaving the Sun. We compared the observed IP shock propagation speeds and the IP shock transit speeds estimated by time difference between the interplanetary type II radio burst detection and the IP shock observation. Then, we found that the mean acceleration of the IP shocks between the Sun and the Earth is about $-1.02m/sec^2$, which means the deceleration contrary to the positive acceleration predicted by Parker solar wind model. It is also verified that the acceleration of the IP shock does not show any linear correlation with the shock propagation speed and the Mach number of the IP shock.

  • In this paper, we performed the design study of a wide-band digital autocorrelation spectrometer for the observation study of an extra-galaxy's spectral lines and the survey research of the special radio sources in field of the radio astronomy observational research. The autocorrelation spectrometer designed in this paper can be used to their spectrometer of any system because this spectrometer has a wide dynamic power and frequency range properties. In this system we use the aliasing sampling method to minimize the band loss. For the output signal of the correlator we can increase the signal processing speed using by a special DSP chip, the integration and the FFT using hardware, so this spectrometer can support the newest developed technique for the radio astronomy observation so called “On the fly” method.

  • A fiber-optic reference signal transmission system, which transmits the 1.4 GHz reference signal from H-maser to receiver cabin in radio telescopes, was adopted for compensating the phase changes due to temperature variation and antenna movement. At the first experiment, the remote signal's phase changed more than 15 degrees at 1.4 GHz. We found unstable components in sub-system experiments and replaced them. The main cause of unstable phase stability was the unaligned polarization axis between Laser Diode and Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM). The improved system stability showed $1{\times}10^{-16}$ allan standard deviation at 1,000 sec integration time with the antenna fixed. When the antenna moves in the azimuth axis, the 1.4 GHz remote signal showed the phase change smaller than 0.2 degrees.

  • We report the performance of the 13.7-meter Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) radio telescope. The telescope has been equipped with a new receiver, SEQUOIA-TRAO, a new backend system, FFT2G, and a new VxWorks operating system. The receiver system features a 16-pixel focal plane array using high-performance MMIC preamplifiers; it shows very low system noise levels, with system noise temperatures from 150 K to 450 K at frequencies from 86 to 115 GHz. With the new backend system, we can simultaneously obtain 32 spectra, each with a velocity coverage of 163 km s-1 and a resolution of 0.04 km s-1 at 115 GHz. The new operating system, VxWorks, has successfully handled the LMTMC-TRAO observing software. The main observing method is the on-the-fly (OTF) mapping mode; a position-switching mode is available for small-area observations. Remote observing is provided. The antenna surface has been newly adjusted using digital photogrammetry, achieving a rms surface accuracy better than 130 ㎛. The pointing uncertainty is found to be less than 5" over the entire sky. We tested the new receiver system with multi-frequency observations in OTF mode. The aperture efficiencies are 43±1%, 42±1%, 37±1%, and 33±1%, the beam efficiencies are 45±2%, 48±2%, 46±2%, and 41±2% at 86, 98, 110, and 115 GHz, respectively.

  • We present the first results of the invariant point (IVP) coordinates of the KVN Ulsan and Tamna radio telescopes. To determine the IVP coordinates in the geocentric frame (ITRF2014), a coordinate transformation method from the local frame, in which it is possible to survey using the optical instrument, to the geocentric frame was adopted. The least-square circles are fitted in three dimensions using the Gauss-Newton method to determine the azimuth and elevation axes in the local frame. The IVP in the local frame is defined as the mean value of the intersection points of the azimuth axis and the orthogonal vector between the azimuth and elevation axes. The geocentric coordinates of the IVP are determined by obtaining the seven transformation parameters between the local frame and the east-north-up (ENU) geodetic frame. The axis-offset between the azimuth and elevation axes is also estimated. To validate the results, the variation of coordinates of the GNSS station installed at KVN Ulsan was compared to the movement of the IVP coordinates over 9 months, showing good agreement in both magnitude and direction. This result will provide an important basis for geodetic and astrometric applications.

  • To understand the assembly of the galaxy population in clusters today, it is important to first understand the impact of previous environments prior to cluster infall, namely preprocessing. We use 15 cluster samples from hydrodynamic zoom-in simulation YZiCS to determine the significance of preprocessing focusing primarily on the tidal mass loss of dark matter halos. We find ~48% of the cluster member halos were once satellites of another host. The preprocessed fraction is not a clear function of cluster mass. Instead, we find it is related to each individual cluster's recent mass growth history. We find that the total mass loss is a clear function of time spent in a host. However, two factors can considerably increase the mass loss rate. First, if the satellite mass is approaching the mass of its host. Second, when the halo suffers tidal mass loss at a higher redshift. The preprocessing provides an opportunity for halos to experience tidal mass loss for a more extended period of time than would be possible if they simply fell directly into the cluster, and at earlier epochs when hosts were more destructive to their satellites.

  • VLBI experiments have been conducted by radio telescopes in the East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) in which 14 telescopes in China, Japan, and Korea participated. One of the aims of the EAVN is to obtain higher angular resolution that is provided by the 6,000 km baseline between China and Japan and better sensitivity by adding large telescopes. Data were recorded at 1 a Gbps recording rate at all stations and processed on the Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator (KJJVC) at the Korea-Japan Correlation Center (KJCC) after experiments. Fringes were obtained from these experiments conducted at 8 GHz and 22 GHz and post-correlation data analysis of the experiments is undergoing. The outcomes of these experiments open the possibility of conducting EAVN observations with global VLBI networks. In this presentation, the recent status of these experiments and future prospects are presented.

  • Using multi-epoch spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we identify 16 spectrally variable sources, for which the spectral shapes of broad emission lines significantly vary with a time scale of yrs. Out of them, 3 AGNs are already known as changing-look (CL) AGNs by previous studies. 6 AGNs are newly identified as CL AGNs from our study. A majority of these AGNs are relatively faint and their variability in the continuum is small, which may explain their non-detection in the previous studies. 7 sources are known as binary AGN candidates based on the systematic velocity offset between broad emission lines and narrow emission lines. For those sources and 3 CL AGNs, we find that the peak of broad emission lines had been shifted up to a few thousands km/s for ~10 years, implying that those can be promising candidates for pc-scale binary AGNs or recoiling black holes. We plan to conduct multiwavelength follow-up studies to nail down the physical origin of the velocity shift.

  • In this study, we determine coronal electron density distributions by analyzing DH type II radio observations based on the assumption: a DH type II radio burst is generated by the shock formed at a CME leading edge. For this, we consider 11 Wind/WAVES DH type II radio bursts (from 2000 to 2003 and from 2010 to 2012) associated with SOHO/LASCO limb CMEs using the following criteria: (1) the fundamental and second harmonic emission lanes are well identified; (2) its associated CME is clearly identified in the LASCO-C2 or C3 field of view at the time of type II observation. For these events, we determine the lowest frequencies of their fundamental emission lanes and the heights of their leading edges. Coronal electron density distributions are obtained by minimizing the root mean square error between the observed heights of CME leading edges and the heights of DH type II radio bursts from assumed electron density distributions. We find that the estimated coronal electron density distribution ranges from 2.5 to 10.2-fold Saito's coronal electron density models.
