The decomposition of antibiotics (cefaclor) by gamma irradiation in aqueous solutions was experimentally evaluated. To obtain a mutual interaction between two factors (antibiotics concentrations and radiation doses) and to optimize these factors during the process, experimental design and statistical analysis were employed. The decomposition capability of the gamma radiation was also mathematically described as a function of cefaclor concentration and gamma-ray dose using the statistical analysis. The results showed that the cefaclor concentration ($X_1$) in the response $Y_1$ (Reduction of cefaclor concentration) and gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_2$ (Removal efficiency (%) of cefaclor concentration) exhibited a significantly positive effect, whereas gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_1$ showed a significantly negative effect. The estimated ridge of maximum responses and optimal conditions for $Y_1$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(25 mg/L, 350 Gy) and $Y_2$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(21 mg/L, 565 Gy) using canonical analysis were 4.37 mg/L of reduction of cefaclor concentration and 98.35% of removal efficiency of cefaclor concentration, respectively. The measurement values agreed well with the predicted ones, thereby confirming the suitability of the model for $Y_1$ and $Y_2$ and the success of the experimental design in optimizing the conditions of the gamma irradiation process.

This study aimed to determine the optimal thickness of the active layer and scan mode for a flexible radiochromic film (F-RCF) based on the active lithium salt of pentacosa-10,12-diynoic acid (LiPCDA). F-RCFs of 90, 120, 140, and 170-㎛ thickness were fabricated using LiPCDA. Several pieces of the F-RCFs were exposed to doses ranging from 0 to 3 Gy. Transmission and reflection modes were used to scan the irradiated F-RCFs. Their dose-response curves were obtained using a second-order polynomial equation. Their sensitivity was evaluated for both scanning modes, and the uniformity of the batch was also examined. For both the transmission and reflection modes, the sensitivity increased as the film thickness increased. For the reflection mode, the dose response increased dramatically under 1 Gy. The value of the net optical density varied rapidly as the thickness of the film increased. However, the dose-response curves showed a supralinear-curve relationship at doses greater than 2 Gy. The sensitivity of the reflection scan at doses greater than 2 Gy was higher than that of the reflection scan within 0-2 Gy. The sensitivity steadily decreased with increasing doses, and the sensitivity of the two modes was within 0.1 to 0.2 at 2 Gy and was saturated beyond that. For the transmission scan, the sensitivity was approximately 0.2 at 3 Gy. For the intra-batch test result, the maximum net optical density difference of the intra-batch was 5.5% at 2 Gy and 7.4% at 0.2 Gy in the transmission and reflection scans, respectively. In the low-dose range, film thickness of more than 120-㎛ was proper in the transmission mode. In contrast, the transmission mode showed a better result compared to the reflection mode. Therefore, the proper scan mode should be selected according to the dose range.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 116 was released to provide a comprehensive dataset of the dose coefficients (DCs) for external exposures produced with the adult reference voxel phantoms of ICRP Publication 110. Although an advanced skeletal dosimetry method for photons and neutrons using fluence-to-dose response functions (DRFs) was introduced in ICRP Publication 116, the ICRP-116 skeletal DCs were calculated by using the simple method conventionally used (i.e., doses to red bone marrow and endosteum approximated by doses to spongiosa and/or medullary cavities). In the present study, the photon and neutron DRFs were used to produce skeletal DCs of the ICRP-110 reference phantoms, which were then compared with the ICRP-116 DCs. For photons, there were significant differences by up to ~2.8 times especially at energies <0.3 MeV. For neutrons, the differences were generally small over the entire energy region (mostly <20%). The general impact of the DRF-based skeletal DCs on the effective dose calculations was negligibly small, supporting the validity of the ICRP-116 effective DCs despite their skeletal DCs derived from the simple method. Meanwhile, we believe that the DRF-based skeletal DCs could be beneficial in better estimates of skeletal doses of individuals for risk assessments.

The optimization of deacetylation process parameters for producing chitosan from isolated chitin shrimp shell waste was investigated using response surface methodology with central composite design (RSM-CCD). Three independent variables viz, NaOH concentration (X1), radiation power (X2), and reaction time (X3) were examined to determine their respective effects on the degree of deacetylation (DD). The DD of chitosan was also calculated using the baseline approach of the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the yields. RSM-CCD analysis showed that the optimal chitosan DD value of 96.45 % was obtained at an optimized condition of 63.41 % (w/v) NaOH concentration, 227.28 W radiation power, and 3.34 min deacetylation reaction. The DD was strongly controlled by NaOH concentration, irradiation power, and reaction duration. The coefficients of correlation were 0.257, 0.680, and 0.390, respectively. Because the procedure used microwave radiation absorption, radiation power had a substantial correlation of 0.600~0.800 compared to the two low variables, which were 0.200~0.400. This independently predicted robust quadratic model interaction has been validated for predicting the DD of chitin.
The detector size effect due to the spatial response of defectors is one critical source of inaccuracy in clinical dosimetry and has been a subject of numerous studies. Conventionally, the detector response kernel contains all of the influence that the detector size has on the measured beam profile. Various analytic models for this kernel have been proposed and studied in theoretical and experimental works. Here, we use a method to determine detector response kernel simply by using Monte Carlo simulation and convolution theory. Based on this numerical method and DOSIMETER, an EGS4 Monte Carlo code, the detector response for a Farmer type ion chamber embedded in water phantom is obtained. There exists characteristic difference in the simulated chamber readings between one with carbon graphite wall and the other with Acrylic wail. Using the obtained response and the convolution theory, we are planning to derive the detector response kernel numerically and remove detector size effect from measurements for 6MV, 10${\times}$l0cm2 and 0.5${\times}$10 cm2 photon beam.
This study is to develop a mobile type environmental radiation measurement system for emergency response or environmental radiation monitoring of local governments near nuclear facilities. A mobile radiation measurement system can monitor radiation by field beyond the spatial constraints of a fixed environmental radiation monitor. If installed in local government infrastructure such as public transportation, environmental radiation can be monitored without additional manpower and measurement work. In addition, it is designed to enable monitoring and measurement of radiation from low to high doses as well as the environment in preparation for radioactive disasters such as nuclear power plant accidents. It is expected that this system will be utilized not only in normal times but also in the event of a radiation accident to improve the disaster prevention capabilities of local governments.
Low-dose radiation exposure has received considerable attention because it reflects the general public's type and level of exposure. Still, controversy remains due to the relatively unclear results and uncertainty in risk estimation compared to high-dose radiation. However, recent epidemiological studies report direct evidence of health effects for various types of low-dose radiation exposure. In particular, international nuclear workers' studies, CT exposure studies, and children's cancer studies on natural radiation showed significantly increased cancer risk among the study populations despite their low-dose radiation exposure. These studies showed similar results even when the cumulative radiation dose was limited to an exposure group of less than 100 mGy, demonstrating that the observed excess risk was not affected by high exposure. A linear dose-response relationship between radiation exposure and cancer incidence has been observed, even at the low-dose interval. These recent epidemiological studies include relatively large populations, and findings are broadly consistent with previous studies on Japanese atomic bomb survivors. However, the health effects of low-dose radiation are assumed to be small compared to the risks that may arise from other lifestyle factors; therefore, the benefits of radiation use should be considered at the individual level through a balanced interpretation. Further low-dose radiation studies are essential to accurately determining the benefits and risks of radiation.
Training for radiation protection and control requires a visual understanding of radiation, which cannot be perceived by the human senses. Trainees must also master the effective use of measuring instruments. Traditionally, such training has exposed trainees to radiation sources. Here, we present a novel e-training strategy that enables safe, exposure-free handling of a radiation measuring tool called a survey meter. Our mixed reality radiation-training system merges the physical world with a digital one. Collaborating with a mixed reality headset (HoloLens 2), this system constructs a mock-up of a survey meter in real-world space. The HoloLens 2 employs a browser-based application to visualize radiation and to simulate/share the use of the survey meter, including its physical movements. To provide a dynamic learning experience, the system adjusts the survey-meter mock-up readings according to the operator's movements, distance from the radiation source, the response time of survey meter, and shielding levels. Through this approach, we expect that trainees will acquire practical skills in interpreting survey-meter readings and gain a visual understanding of radiation in real-world situations.
The effects of atmospheric thermal loads on the response of structural elements that are exposed to open environments have been recognized by research works and design specifications. The main source of atmospheric heat is solar radiation, which dominates the variation of the temperature of air, earth surface and all exposed objects. The temperature distribution along the depth of steel members may differ with the geometry configuration, which means that the different-configuration steel members may suffer different thermally induced strains and stresses. In this research, an experimental steel beam was instrumented with many thermocouples in addition to other sensors. Surface temperatures, air temperature, solar radiation and wind speed measurements were recorded continuously for 21 summer days. Based on a finite element thermal analysis, which was verified using the experimental records, several parametric studies were directed to investigate the effect of the geometrical parameters of AISC standard steel sections on their thermal response. The results showed that the overall size of the beam, its depth and the thickness of its elements are of significant effect on vertical temperature distributions and temperature differences.
