Polyethylene Film Surface Metallization Modified by Radiation Grafting of N-vinyl Pyrollidone

  • Poyethylene films can be modified by radiation grafting of N-vinyl pyrollidone using y-radiation. FTIR spectra were used to confirm the modification of PE films. The modified films were activated by two-step and one step methods for electroless Cu plating. Morphology of metallized films has been investigated. Electroless Cu plating onto the modified films depends mainly on the grafting degree and activation type. The conductivity of the metallized films has been investigated.

Influence of Quaternary Ammonium Anion Exchange Moieties onto Mechanical Properties of Radiation-grafting Anion Exchange Membranes (방사선그라프팅 음이온교환막의 기계적 물성에 대한 4차 암모늄 음이온교환기의 영향)

  • Various anion exchange membranes were prepared by radiation graft copolymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride onto fluorinated films and subsequent quaternization with various tertiary amines such as trimethylamine, N,N-dimethylbuthylamine, N,N-dimethylaniline, and N-methylpiperidine. The quaternizations of the anion exchange membranes were confirmed by measuring of the ion exchange capacities of the membranes. The mechanical properties and the water uptakes were also measured. The elongation at break was found to be largely dependent on the fluorinated film, the quateranry ammonium, and the degree of grafting. The results indicate that the poly (ethylene-alt-tetrafluoroethylene) with quaternized trimethylamine moiety exhibits higher flexible property compared to the other prepared anion exchange membranes.

  • The sulfonated ion exchange fibers were synthesized by $Co^{60}\;{\gamma}-ray$ radiation-induced graft copolymerization. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the total dose. The degree of grafting for POF-g-St/DVB copolymer was 1000%. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated ion exchange fibers were increased by increasing the degree of sulfonation. Its maximum value was 5.06 meq/g. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated POF- co-St/DVB ion exchange fiber was higher than that of the sulfonated POF- co-styrene ion exchange fibers. The amount of adsorption for heavy metals were also increased with increase in the degree of grafting of the ion exchange fibers.

  • Cellulose grafted with acrylic acid(AAc) was prepared by radiation grafting technique. The effects of reaction temperature. reaction time, monomer concentration, and the crosslinkers on the AAc grafting reaction on cellulose were examined. The amount of AAc grafted on the cellulose reached maximum at the concentration of 0.75vol% difunctional crosslinker and 1.0vol% trifunctional crosslinker, respectively. In the presence of acid, the amount of AAc grafted on the cellulose was decreased when reaction solution contains difunctional crosslinker, while that was increased when reaction solution contains trifunctional crosslinker. In the grafting reaction of cellulose with AAc and TMETA, mixture containing ferrous sulfate and acid enhanced further AAc grafting yield than mixture containing ferrous sulfate only.

  • Acrylic acid was grafted onto the peroxidized cellulose which was stored at room temperature for 20 days after ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation in air. The effect of acids and metallic salts on the grafting yields was determined. The addition of both the acid and metallic salt was found to accelerate the grafting yield much more than the only metallic salt, and the addition of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ led to much higher grafting yield than that of $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$. The effect of acid on the grafting yield increased by the order $H_2>SO_4>HCl>HNO_3>CH_3COOH$. With the addition of $H_2SO_4$, the grafting yield rapidly increased up to $7{\times}10^{-2}$M, and then levelled off.

  • In this study, a vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) monomer was successfully grafted onto the several fluoropolymer films including poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP), poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropylvinyl ether) (PFA), and poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films by using a simultaneous irradiation method. The results indicated that PVBC graft polymer can be easily grafted onto the ETFE film than other fluorinated films under the same irradiation condition. The grafted films were characterized by using FTIR, TGA, and SEM-EDS instruments. The elongation at the breaking of the grafted films was found to decrease with an increase of degree of grafting (DOG). The PVBC-grafted ETFE films were found to have better mechanical properties than other PVBC-grafted fluorinated films.

  • Active polymer gels expand and contract in response to certain environmental stimuli, such as the application of an electric field or a change in the pH level of the surroundings. This ability to achieve large, reversible deformations with no external mechanical loading has generated much interest in the use of these gels as biomimetic actuators and artificial muscles. In this study, poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) grafted acrylic acid monomer (PVA-g-AAc) hydrogels were prepared by $^{60}Co$ ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation and their properties such as degree of grafting and weight swelling in electrostimulation as an artificial muscle and actuator were investigated.

  • In this study, several anion exchange membranes were successfully prepared by radiation grafting of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) monomer onto a polyethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) film and subsequent quaternarization with diamins such as 1,4-diazbicyclo[2,2,2]octane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,3-diaminopropane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-diaminohexane, and trimethylamine. The anion exchange capacities of the prepared membranes were determined by using acid-base titration method. The cross-sectional morphology of the membranes was studied by using SEM instrument. The cross-sectional distribution patterns of the grafted polymers with anion exchange functional groups were also studied by EDX analysis.

The Preparation of a Thermally Responsive Surface by Ion Beam-induced Graft Polymerization

  • In this study, the preparation of a temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-grafted surface was performed using an eco-friendly and biocompatible ion beam-induced surface graft polymerization. The surface of a perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) film was activated by ion implantation and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) was then graft polymerized selectively onto the activated regions of the PFA surfaces. Based on the results of the peroxide concentration and grafting degree measurements, the amount of the peroxide groups formed on the implanted surface was dependant on the fluence, which affected the grafting degree. The results of the FT-IR-ATR, XPS, and SEM confirmed that the NIPAAm was successfully grafted onto the implanted PFA. Moreover, the contact angle measurement at different temperatures revealed that the surface of the PNIPAAm-grafted PFA film was temperature-responsive.
