The radiation dosage of nuclear fuel handling machine of PHWR type NPP during normal operation is measured using semiconductor detectors. In order to predict and mitigate the damage of main components in fuel handling machine, caused by high irradiation, the radiation dosage exerted to the components by neutron and gamma ray is measured independently during one time of the fuel exchange, which is used far estimating the radiation dosage for one year. This result can guarantee the safety and economical efficiency for determining the replacement time of the high cost main components in fuel handling machine.
The quasi-exposure rate and the quasi-effective energy of the natural radiation in the field at 47 monitoring points around nuclear power plants have been studied with the pair filter thermoluminescence dosimeter system. The results of the six years observation showed that the relationship between the quasi-exposure rate $X_q$, and quasi-effective energy $E_q$ can be represented as a hyperbolic function: $X_q=A+C/(E_q-B)$, where the constants A and B correspond to the quasi-exposure rate of cosmic-rays and the minimum quasi-effective energy of natural radiation, respectively. Furthermore, the constant A is in close agreement with the values obtained by using ionization chambers and scintillation detectors. The constant B is approximately 0.68 MeV, closely corresponding to the mean energy of the photons emitted from natural uranium.
In this study, we evaluated an edge detector for small-beam dosimetry. We measured the dose linearity, dose rate dependence, output factor, beam profiles, and percentage depth dose using an edge detector (Model 1118 Edge) for 6-MV photon beams at different field sizes and depths. The obtained values were compared with those obtained using a standard volume ionization chamber (CC13) and photon diode detector (PFD). The dose linearity results for the three detectors showed good agreement within 1%. The edge detector had the best linearity of ${\pm}0.08%$. The edge detector and PFD showed little dose rate dependency throughout the range of 100~600 MU/min, while CC13 showed a significant discrepancy of approximately -5% at 100 MU/min. The output factors of the three detectors showed good agreement within 1% for the tested field sizes. However, the output factor of CC13 compared to the other two detectors had a maximum difference of 21% for small field sizes (${\sim}4{\times}4\;cm^2$). When analyzing the 20~80% penumbra, the penumbra measured using CC13 was approximately two times wider than that using the edge detector for all field sizes. The width measured using PFD was approximately 30% wider for all field sizes. Compared to the edge detector, the 10~90% penumbras measured using the CC13 and PFD were approximately 55% and 19% wider, respectively. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the edge detector was close to the real field size, while the other two detectors measured values that were 8~10% greater for all field sizes. Percentage depth doses measured by the three detectors corresponded to each other for small beams. Based on the results, we consider the edge detector as an appropriate small-beam detector, while CC13 and PFD can lead to some errors when used for small beam fields under $4{\times}4\;cm^2$.
A comprehensive approach for modeling the pulse height spectra of gamma-ray detectors from passing radioactive cloud in a case of accident at NPP has been developed. It involves modeling the transport of radionuclides in the atmosphere using Lagrangian stochastic model, WRF meteorological processor with an ARW core and GFS data to obtain spatial distribution of radionuclides in the air at a given moment of time. Applying representation of the cloud as superposition of elementary sources of gamma radiation the pulse height spectra are calculated based on data on flux density from point isotropic sources and detector response function. The proposed approach allows us to obtain time-dependent spectra for any complex radionuclide composition of the release. The results of modeling the pulse height spectra of the scintillator detector NaI(Tl) Ø63×63 mm for a hypothetical severe accident at a NPP are presented.

The virtual Frisch-grid method for room-temperature radiation detectors has been widely used because of its simplicity and high performance. Recently, side electrodes were separately attached to each surface of the detectors instead of covering the entire detector surface with a single electrode. The side-electrode structure enables the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) gamma-ray interaction in the detector. The positional information of the interaction can then be utilized to precisely calibrate the response of the detector for gamma-ray spectroscopy and imaging. In this study, we developed a 3D position-sensitive 5 × 5 × 12 mm3 cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detector and applied a flattening method to correct detector responses. Collimated gamma-rays incident on the surface of the detector were scanned to evaluate the positional accuracy of the detection system. Positional distributions of the radiation interactions with the detector were imaged for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. The energy spectra of various radioisotopes were measured and improved by the detector response calibration according to the calculated positional information. The energy spectra ranged from 59.5 keV (emitted by 241Am) to 1332 keV (emitted by 60Co). The best energy resolution was 1.06% at 662 keV when the CZT detector was voxelized to 20 × 20 × 10.
Control of scattered radiation is one of very important factors in the use of medical radiation. In general X-ray exam, the causes, measurement methods, and the kind of detectors of scattered rays within the radiation area are diverse. In this study, the dose of scattered ray was measured by changing the thickness of the polycarbonate phantom and the tube voltage. As a result of measurement of scattered radiation, the results show that the scattered dose significantly(p<.05) increased with growing of thickness of phantom in the tube voltage 40, 50 and 60 kVp(F(p)<.05, R2>64%). As tube voltage increased at all phantom thicknesses, the scattered dose also significantly(p<.05) increased(F(p)<.05, R2>69%). In cases where a significant correlation was shown, the coefficient of determination of more than 60% was shown in regression analysis. The results of this study can be used as data on scattered radiation dose according to the tube voltage and the object thickness in general X-ray imaging exam.
A suggestion has been made for neutron dosimetric techniques using activation and threshold detectors in criticality accidents. Neutron dosimetrical parameters, namely, the fission spectrum-averaged cross-sections of some threshold reactions and fluence-to-dose conversion factors have been calculated by the use of an electronic computer. It appears that detectors having comparatively high threshold energy give more fine information on spectral deformation in criticality accidents, while detectors with low threshold energy are of usefulness for measuring fast neutron fluence regardless of fissioning types. Unexpectedly it is found that the fission spectrum-averaged cross sections of the $^{32}S(n,\;p)^{32}P$ reaction is not sensitive to analytical forms of fission neutron spectrum: the modified Cran-berg and Maxwellian forms. In addition, the fluence-to-dose conversion factors seem to be insensitive to both spectral functions and fissioning types.
A series of experiments is performed to measure radon concentration in the near-surface soil gas at the four locations (Cheju-Si, Seoguipo-Si, Taejeong-eup, Seongsan-eup) in Cheju Island, using CR-39 detectors placed inside radon cups. Two types of radon cups are installed in shallow holes of about 15 cm in diameter and 50cm in depth. The optimum etching conditions, i.e., the concentration of NaOH solution, etchant temperature and etching time, are found to be 625N, $70^{\circ}C$ and 5.5 hours for CR-39 detectors. A typical conversion factor of radon cup is calculated as $$1track/mm^3{\cdot}30day=0.059Bq/{\ell}$$. Average radon concentrations over 30 days measured in Cheju Island from May 1, 1987 to April 23, 1988 are $3.1{\pm}0.3Bq/{\ell}$ for open radon cups and $1.7{\pm}0.2Bq/{\ell}$ for closed radon cups.
