  • Heat losses from receivers for a dish-type solar energy collecting system are numerically investigated. The analytical method for predicting conductive heat loss from a cavity receiver is used. The Stine and McDonald Model is used to estimate convective heat loss. Two kinds of techniques for the radiation analysis are used. The Net Radiation Method that is based on the radiation heat balance on the surface is used to calculate the radiation heat transfer rate from the inside surface of the cavity receiver to the environment. The Monte-Carlo Method that is the statistical approach is adopted to predict the radiation heat transfer rate from the reflector to the receiver. Based on the heat loss analysis, the performance of two different receivers for multifaceted parabolic solar collectors with several flat facets can be estimated, and the optimal facet size is obtained.

  • This study was carried out to analyze solar radiation in plastic greenhouse which is covered with polyethylene or polyvinyl chrolide film. A computer model for solar radiation analysis in the plastic greenhouse was developed and solar gain factors for E-W and N-S oriented plastic greenhouse in the greenhouse farming area during winter were investigated. Solar gain factors for E-W plastic greenhouse were 60 to 75 percent which were 10 to 15 percent higher than those for N-S plastic greenhouse from November to January. However, the values were apparently decreased in February and reversed in March, showing 3 to 5 percent higher in E-W plastic greenhouse. About 67 to 72 percent of the total solar radiation was attributed to the south-directed wall and roof for the E-W plastic greenhouse and about 30 percent through walls and 60 percent through roofs for the N-S plastic greenhouse.

  • Buildings receive solar radiation through windows and the solar radiation helps to save heating energy in winter. Therefore the bigger the glazing ratio is, the larger the amount of solar radiation we can receive. In this study we analysed the glazing ratio of Certified Green Building Apartments. And we verified whether the glazing ratio reflects energy saving through accepting solar radiation with correlation analysis. For glazing ratio analysis, we selected 116 apartment buildings of 19 apartment complexes that certified in 2008-2009 and took pictures of outside windows of the buildings. After that, we analysed the building's glazing ratio with 4 azimuth and checked distinction of the glazing ratio between 6 coupled azimuths. And we analysed the correlation between importance order of azimuth for energy saving and the glazing ratio change with the azimuth. The analysis showed that the glazing ratio does not reflect energy saving through accepting solar radiation.

  • A heat-sink has been widely used to cool down the heat generated from an electronic device, but it can bring unwanted electromagnetic radiation which may cause EMI problems. We propose a systematic method to reduce the electromagnetic radiation by using the multiple grounding technique based on the grounding criteria and the theory of characteristic mode analysis. Our proposed method provides the insight to find the specific grounding positions which can be effectively reduced the radiation from the heat-sink. Numerical experiments are accomplished to validate this approach.

  • Background & Objectives: This study investigates the recognition on the necessity of the use of radiation for both college students who are considered that they have a high knowledge level in radiation and proposes basic materials to change the recognition of the use of radiation. Also, the investigation was applied to average people who showed the most negative attitudes on radiation. Methods: A questionnaire was applied to 600 college students for five days from October 10 to 15, 2005 and used in statistical analysis. Results: The average value obtained in the recognition of the use of radiation was 76.60 points in which male respondents who were majored in natural science, health, and engineering department and respondents who have experienced radiation related education, radiation diagnosis, and radiation treatment demonstrated higher levels. Also, the average value obtained in the recognition of the radiation damage was 71.66 points in which respondents who were majored in natural sciences, humanities, engineering, and health department showed higher levels than that of respondents who were majored in art and physical department. Groups that exhibited higher recognition levels in the necessity of the use of radiation were male respondents and respondents who were majored in natural science, humanities, and health department and have experienced radiation diagnosis and radiation treatment. In the results of the correlation analysis on the necessity of the use of radiation and recognition of radiation damages, the recognition of radiation damages was presented as negative attitudes in the case of the higher recognition level in the necessity of the use of radiation. Conclusions: Regarding the frequency of the use of radiation in Korea, a 80.9% of university students who showed a high education level had no experiences in radiation related education. Although they showed a relatively high level of 76.6 points in the recognition level of the necessity of the use of radiation, the negative attitude on the radiation damage was also presented as a high level of 71.7 points. Because the providing chance of radiation related information was limited as compared to the atomic power used in Korea and dependancy of the use of radiation, it is necessary to provide the basic information related in the use of radiation to the public. In addition, various investigations on the use of radiation and such negative attitudes are required in future for the public. Also, the correct information of the radiation safety should be delivered to the public.

  • Solar radiation causes non-uniform temperature distribution in the structure, depending on the shape of the structure and its shadows. Especially in cases of curved steel box girder bridges, non-uniform temperature distribution due to solar radiation can reduce bridge life and serviceability when combined with another load combination. In this study, the method for predicting the temperature distribution of curved bridges developed by Kim et al., was used to predict the non-uniform temperature distribution which served as a basis for structural analysis of 3-D bridge behavior. In order to seek the most unfavorable conditions of solar radiation, observation data from the Korea Meteorological Administration for solar radiation were analyzed. The region of the most high solar radiation condition was selected and its one year variation of the solar radiation data was considered. From this analysis, the most unfavorable solar radiation condition with lower solar altitude and intense solar radiation was selected. Based on the selected solar radiation condition, structural behavior of curved bridges with diverse bridge direction, span length, radius and support conditions are analyzed.

  • The surface solar radiation is an important indicators for climate and agricultural research over the Earth system. For the climate and agricultural research, long-term meteorological data and accurate measured data are needed. The daily solar radiation from Jan. 2001 to Dec. 2010 have been employed in this study analyze atmospheric transmissivity for Chupungryeong. The corresponding daily value of atmospheric transmissivity is calculated for Chupungryeong meteorological data. In this paper, relationship analysis of daily solar radiation and atmospheric transmissivity is presented. It shows that atmospheric transmissivity over late December peaked in the 2000s, substantially decreased from the early-January, and changed little after that in summer. Reduction of solar radiation caused a reduction of more than 0.3 in atmospheric transmissivity during July to August. It was concluded that the atmospheric transmissivity could be very useful for evaluating solar radiation. Atmospheric transmissivity approach is suitable for daily-term simulation studies and useful for computing solar radiation.

  • Control of scattered radiation is one of very important factors in the use of medical radiation. In general X-ray exam, the causes, measurement methods, and the kind of detectors of scattered rays within the radiation area are diverse. In this study, the dose of scattered ray was measured by changing the thickness of the polycarbonate phantom and the tube voltage. As a result of measurement of scattered radiation, the results show that the scattered dose significantly(p<.05) increased with growing of thickness of phantom in the tube voltage 40, 50 and 60 kVp(F(p)<.05, R2>64%). As tube voltage increased at all phantom thicknesses, the scattered dose also significantly(p<.05) increased(F(p)<.05, R2>69%). In cases where a significant correlation was shown, the coefficient of determination of more than 60% was shown in regression analysis. The results of this study can be used as data on scattered radiation dose according to the tube voltage and the object thickness in general X-ray imaging exam.

  • Underwater radiated noise is the key in acoustic stealth performance of modern naval ships. The underwater radiated noise predicted by the hull vibration with radiation efficiency cannot give the information of radiation pattern which is essential to the analysis of detection possibility by enemy and to improve the operational performance of the naval ship. The radiation pattern of underwater radiated noise is able to be obtained with radiation efficiency and radiation direction coefficient. In this paper, a new method to extraction the radiation efficiency and radiation direction coefficient is suggested and proved with the simulation and experiment by using cylindrical shell of 70cm diameter in air.
