  • This paper proposes a method for expensive black box optimization using radial basis functions (RBFs). The proposed algorithm is a computational strategy that uses a RBF model approximating the expensive black box function to predict an optimum. First, a RBF-based approximation technique is introduced and a sampling plan for estimation of the black box function is described. Then the proposed algorithm is explained, which presents the pseudo-codes for implementation and the detailed description of each step performed in the optimization process. In addition, numerical experiments will be given to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, by investigating computation accuracy, number of function evaluations, and convergence history. Finally, geometric distance problem as application example will be also presented for showing the algorithm applicability to different engineering problems.

  • In this paper a new shape reconstruction method that allows us to construct surface models from very large sets of points is presented. In this method the global domain of interest is divided into smaller domains where the problem can be solved locally. These local solutions of subdivided domains are blended together according to weighting coefficients to obtain a global solution using partition of unity function. The suggested approach gives us considerable flexibility in the choice of local shape functions which depend on the local shape complexity and desired accuracy. At each domain, a quadratic polynomial function is created that fits the points in the domain. If the approximation is not accurate enough, other higher order functions including cubic polynomial function and RBF(Radial Basis Function) are used. This adaptive selection of local shape functions offers robust and efficient solution to a great variety of shape reconstruction problems.

  • The slot coupling characteristics was analysed in a radial-line slot antenna for its design. The previously proposed waveguide model with a periodic boundary condition on its narrow walls and periodically arranged slots on its wide wall was used. The magnetic field integral equation and two dyadic Green\`s functions for respective regions was derived and the method of moments was used. To maximize the efficiency of numerical analysis and to extract singularities, two different kinds of basis functions, the entire domain basis function and the sub-domain one, are used. In addition, the Ewald sum technique for the rectangular waveguide and the Shanks transform for the half space were used to accelerate the computation of the slowly convergent potential Green\`s functions. Simulation results expressed the effects of the various design parameters on the slot coupling.

  • In this paper, a modified RBF(Radial Basis Function) network structure is suggested for the prediction of a time-series with non-linear, non-stationary characteristics. Coventional RBF network predicting time series by using past outputs sense the trajectory of the time series and react when there exists strong relation between input and hidden activation function's RBF center. But this response is highly sensitive to level and trend of time serieses. In order to overcome such dependencies, hidden activation functions are modified to react to the increments of input variable and multiplied by increment(or dectement) for prediction. When the suggested structure is applied to prediction of Macyey-Glass chaotic time series, Lorenz equation, and Rossler equation, improved performances are obtained.

  • The paper concerns Fuzzy C-Means clustering based Radial Basis Function neural networks (FCM-RBFNN) and the optimization of the network is carried out by means of Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). FCM-RBFNN is the extended architecture of Radial Basis Function Neural Network(RBFNN). In the proposed network, the membership functions of the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms such as Gaussian, ellipsoidal, triangular, etc., so its resulting fitness values directly rely on the computation of the relevant distance between data points by means of FCM. Also, as the consequent part of fuzzy rules extracted by the FCM - RBFNN model, the order of four types of polynomials can be considered such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. Weighted Least Square Estimator(WLSE) are used to estimates the coefficients of polynomial. Since the performance of FCM-RBFNN is affected by some parameters of FCM-RBFNN such as a specific subset of input variables, fuzzification coefficient of FCM, the number of rules and the order of polynomials of consequent part of fuzzy rule, we need the structural as well as parametric optimization of the network. In this study, the PSO is exploited to carry out the structural as well as parametric optimization of FCM-RBFNN. Moreover The proposed model is demonstrated with the use of numerical example and gas furnace data set.

  • A new adaptive dual reciprocity boundary element method for dynamic analysis of 3-D structures is presented in this paper. It is based on finding the best approximation function of a radial basis function (RBF) group $f=r^n+c$ which minimize the error of displacement field expansion. Also, the effects of some parameters such as the existence of internal points, number of RBF functions and position of collocation nodes in discontinuous elements are investigated in this adaptive procedure. Three numerical examples show improvement in dynamic response of structures with adaptive RBF in dual reciprocity with respect to ordinary BEM.

  • In this paper, we investigate an efficient hybrid method for solving two-asset time fractional Black-Scholes partial differential equations. The proposed method is based on the Crank-Nicolson the radial basis functions methods. We show that, this method is convergent and we obtain good approximations for solution of our problems. The numerical results show high accuracy of the proposed method without needing high computational cost.

  • This paper presents a novel implicit level set method for topology optimization of functionally graded (FG) structures with pre-existing discontinuities (pre-cracks) using radial basis functions (RBF). The mathematical formulation of the optimization problem is developed by incorporating RBF-based nodal densities as design variables and minimizing compliance as the objective function. To accurately capture crack-tip behavior, crack-tip enrichment functions are introduced, and an eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) is employed for analyzing the mechanical response of FG structures with strong discontinuities. The enforcement of boundary conditions is achieved using the Hamilton-Jacobi method. The study provides detailed mathematical expressions for topology optimization of systems with defects using FG materials. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the proposed methodology.

  • The Dynamic equations in the polar coordinates are drawn out using the MLPG method for the non-symmetric FG cylindrical shell. To simulate the mechanical properties of FGM, the nonlinear volume fractions for radial direction are used. The shape function applied in this paper is a form of the radial basis functions, by using this function all the requirements for an effective and suitable shape function are established. Hence in this study, the multiquadrics (MQ) radial basis functions are exploited as the shape function governing the problem. The MLPG method is combined with the the Newmark time approximation scheme to solve dynamic equations in the time domain. The obtained results by the MLPG method to be verified are compared with the analytical solution and the FEM. The obtained results through the MLPG method show a good agreement in comparison to other results and the MLPG method has high accuracy for dynamic analysis of the non-symmetric FG cylindrical shell. To demonstrate the capability of the present method to dynamic analysis of the non-symmetric FG cylindrical shell, it is analyzed dynamically with different volume fraction exponents under harmonic and rectangular shock loading. The present method shows high accuracy, efficiency and capability to dynamic analysis of the non-symmetric FG cylindrical shell with nonlinear grading patterns.
