There are two datasets to estimate the area-mean and time-mean precipitation rate. For one, an array of surface rain gauges represents a series of rods that have to the time axis of the volume. And another data is that of a remote sensing make periodic overpasses at a fixed interval such as radar. The problem of optimally combining data from surface rain gauge data and remote sensed data is considered. In order to combining remote sensed data with Automatic Weather Station (AWS), we use optimal weighting method, which is similar to the method of [2]. They had suggested optimal weights that minimized value of the mean square error. In this paper, optimal weight is evaluated for the cases such as Changma, summer Monsoon, Typhoon and orographic rain.
The coordinate system conversion of weather radar data is a basic and important process because it can be a factor to measure the accuracy of radar precipitation rate by comparison with the ground rain gauge. We proposed a real-time coordinate system conversion method that combines the advantages of the interpolation masks of SPRINT and REORDER to use tables of predetermined radar samples for each interpolated object coordinate and also distance weights for each precomputed sample. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the computation speed more than 20~30 times compared with the conventional method and shows that the deterioration of image quality is hardly ignored.
We present here, some of the studies carried for estimation of rainfall over land and oceanic regions in and around South Korea. We use active and passive microwave measurements from TRMM - TMI and Precipitation Radar (PR) respectively during a typhoon even named - RUSA that took place during 30 Aug. 2002. We have followed due approach by Yao at. all (2002) and examined the performance of their algorithm using two main predictor variable, named as Scattering Index (SI) and Polarization Corrected Brightness Temperature (PCT) while using TMI data. The rainfall rate estimated using PCT and SI shows some under-estimation as compared to the AWS rainfall products from the PR in common area of overlap. A larger database thus would be used in future. To establish a new rain rate algorithm over Korean region based on the present case study.

This study evaluated PMM (Probability Matching Method) for parameter estimation of the Z - R relation. As a first step, the sensitivity analysis was done to decide the threshold number of data pairs and the data interval for the development of a histogram. As a result, it was found that at least 1,000 number of data pairs are required to apply the PMM for the parameter estimation. This amount of data is similar to that collected for two hours. Also, the number of intervals for the histogram was found to be at least 100. Additionally, it was found that the matching the first-order moment is better than the cumulative probability, and that the data pairs comprising 30 to 100% are better for the PMM application. Finally, above findings were applied to a real rainfall event observed by the Bislsan radar and optimal parameters were estimated. The radar rain rate derived by applying these parameters was found to be well matched to the rain gauge rain rate.

The study adopted extended Kalman filter technique in an effort to predict Z-R relationship parameter as a stable value in real-time. Toward this end, a parameter estimation model was established based on extended Kalman filter in consideration of non-linearity of Z-R relationship. A state-space model was established based on a study that was conducted by Adamowski and Muir (1989). Two parameters of Z-R relationship were set as state variables of the state-space model. As a result, a stable model where a divergence of Kalman gain and state variables are not generated was established. It is noteworthy that overestimated or underestimated parameters based on a conventional method were filtered and removed. As application of inappropriate parameters might cause physically unrealistic rain rate estimation, it can be more effective in terms of quantitative precipitation estimation. As a result of estimation on radar rainfall based on parameters predicted with the extended Kalman filter, the mean field bias correction factor turned out to be around 1.0 indicating that there was a minor difference from the gauge rain rate without the mean field bias correction. In addition, it turned out that it was possible to conduct more accurate estimation on radar rainfall compared to the conventional method.

Freezing rain is a phenomenon when precipitation falls as a liquid rain drop, but freezes when it comes into contact with surfaces or objects. In this study, we investigated the predictability of freezing rain and its characteristics, which are strongly related with the occurrence of black ice using synoptic scale meteorological observation data. Two different cases occurred at 2012 were analyzed and in the presented cases, freezing rain often occurs in the low-level low pressure with the warm front. The warm front due to the lower cyclone make suitable environment in which snow falling from the upper layer can change into supercooled water. The $0^{\circ}C$ temperature line to generate supercooling water is located at an altitude of 850 hPa in the vertical temperature distribution. And the ground temperature remained below zero, as is commonly known as a condition for black ice formation. It is confirmed that the formation rate of freezing rain is higher when the thickness after 1000-850 hPa is 1290-1310 m and the thickness of 850-700 hPa layer is larger than 1540 m in both cases. It can also be used to predict and estimate the generation of freezing rain by detecting and analyzing bright bands in radar observation.

Large-scale and accurate observations at fine spatial resolution through a means of remote sensing offer an effective tool for capturing rainfall variability over the traditional rain gauges and weather radars. Although satellite rainfall products (SRPs) derived using two major estimation approaches were evaluated worldwide, their practical applications suffered from limitations. In particular, the traditional top-down SRPs (e.g., IMERG), which are based on direct estimation of rain rate from microwave satellite observations, are mainly restricted with their coarse spatial resolution, while applications of the bottom-up approach, which allows backward estimation of rainfall from soil moisture signals, to novel high spatial resolution soil moisture satellite sensors over South Korea are not introduced. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the performances of a state-of-the-art bottom-up SRP (the self-calibrated SM2RAIN model) applied to the C-band SAR Sentinel-1, a statistically downscaled version of the conventional top-down IMERG SRP, and their integration for a targeted high spatial resolution of 0.01° (~ 1-km) over central South Korea, where the differences in climate zones (coastal region vs. mainland region) and vegetation covers (croplands vs. mixed forests) are highlighted. The results indicated that each single SRP can provide plus points in distinct climatic and vegetated conditions, while their drawbacks have existed. Superior performance was obtained by merging these individual SRPs, providing preliminary results on a complementary high spatial resolution SRP over central South Korea. This study results shed light on the further development of integration framework and a complementary high spatial resolution rainfall product from multi-satellite sensors as well as multi-observing systems (integrated gauge-radar-satellite) extending for entire South Korea, toward the demands for urban hydrology and microscale agriculture.
Analyses of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave radiometer (TMI) and precipitation radar (PR) data show that the rainfall inhomogeneity, represented by the coefficient of variation, decreases as rain rate increases at the low resolution (the footprint size of TMI 10 GHz channel). The rainfall inhomogeneity, however, is relatively constant for all rain rates at the high resolution (the footprint size of TMI 37 GHz channel). Consequently, radiometric signatures at lower spatial resolutions are characterized by larger dynamic range and smaller variability than those at higher spatial resolution. Based on the observed characteristics, this study develops a low-resolution (${\sim}40{\times}40$ km) rainfall retrieval algorithm utilizing realistic rainfall distributions in the a-priori databases. The purpose of the low-resolution rainfall algorithm is to make more reliable climatological rainfalls from various microwave sensors, including low-resolution radiometers.
In the face of the serious security situation with the increasing threat from North Korea, Korean Army is pursuing a reduction in troops through the performance improvement project of the GOP science-based border security system, which utilizes advanced technology. In order for the GOP science-based border security system to be an effective alternative to the decrease in military resources due to the population decline, it must guarantee a high detection and identification rate and minimize troop intervention by dramatically improving the false detection rate. Recently introduced in Korean Army, the GOP science-based border security system is known to ensure a relatively high detection and identification rate in good weather conditions, but its performance in harsh weather conditions such as rain and fog is somewhat lacking. As an alternative to overcoming this, a radar-based border security system that can detect objects even in bad weather has been proposed. This paper proves the effectiveness of the AI-based scientific border security system based on radar that is being currently tested at the 00th Division through the 2021 Rapid Acquisition Program, and suggests the direction of development for the GOP scientific border security system.
