  • Recently, as disasters caused by weather such as heavy rains have increased, interests in forecasting weather and disasters using radars have been increasing, and related studies have also been actively performed. As the Ministry of Environment(ME) has established and operated a radar network on a national scale, utilization of radars has been emphasized. However, persons in charge and researchers, who want to use the data from radars need to understand characteristics of the radar data and are also experiencing a lot of trials and errors when converting and calibrating the radar data from Universal Format(UF) files. Hence, this study developed a Radar Display and Analysis Program(RaDAP) based on Graphic User Interface(GUI) using the Java Programming Language in order for UF-type radar data to be generated in an ASCII-formatted image file and text file. The developed program can derive desired radar rainfall data and minimize the time required to perform its analysis. Therefore, it is expected that this program will contribute to enhancing the utilization of radar data in various fields.

  • The detection of oil spills using radar image has been studied extensively. However, most of the proposed techniques have been focused on improving detection accuracy through the advancement of algorithms. In this study, research has been conducted to improve the accuracy of oil spill detection by improving the quality of radar images, which are used as input data to detect oil spills. Thresholding algorithms were used to measure the image improvement both before and after processing. The overall accuracy increased by approximately 16%, the producer accuracy increased by 40%, and the user accuracy increased by 1.5%. The kappa coefficient also increased significantly, from 0.48 to 0.92.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for the recognition of the inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) image of multiple targets flying in formation. Rather than separating the ISAR image of each target, the proposed method combines an ISAR image obtained by fusing the ISAR images in the training database. Fusion is conducted by optimizing the non-linear problem whose parameters are the aspect angle and the target location. Assuming that the aspect angle is properly estimated, the proposed method estimates the number of the targets and their locations by optimizing the template matching using PSO. In simulations using the F-16 scale model, the efficiency of the proposed method was demonstrated by yielding the ISAR image identical to that of targets in formation.

  • Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used because of high resolution imaging capability in all weather and day/night condition. In this paper development of Spotlight SAR simulator is proposed for image quality analysis. Proposed SAR simulator is based on the SAR system design parameters so that SAR image performance can be expected which is essential throughout the full system development procedure from the initial concept design stage to the final in-flight calibration and validation stage. The raw data of ideal point target is first generated by taking account of the flight and imaging geometry and the various SAR system design parameters, and the Spotlight image formation algorithm is implemented in order to obtain the point target response. Finally the image quality of the generated raw data is analyzed in terms of spatial resolution, peak to sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio.

  • KOMPSAT-5(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-5) has a benefit of continuously conducting its mission in all weather and even night by loading SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) payload, which is different from optical sensor of KOMPSAT-2 satellite. During IOT(In-Orbit Test) periods, SAR image calibration should be conducted through ground target of which location and RCS is pre-determined. Differently from the conventional corner reflector, active transponder has a capability to change its internal transfer gain and delay, which allows active transponder to be shown in a pixel of SAR image with very high radiance and virtual location. In this paper, the development of active transponder is presented from design to I&T(Integration and Test).

  • This paper is related to the correction of radiometric distortions induced by topographic relief. RADARSAT SAR image data were obtained over the mountainous area near southern part of Seoul. Initially, the SAR data was geometrically corrected and registered to plane rectangular coordinates so that each pixel of the SAR image has known topographic parameters. The topographic parameters (slope and aspect) at each pixel position were calculated from the digital elevation model (DEM) data having a comparable spatial resolution with the SAR data. Local incidence angle between the incoming microwave and the surface normal to terrain slope was selected as a primary geometric factor to analyze and to correct the radiometric distortions. Using digital maps of forest stands, several fields of rather homogeneous forest stands were delineated over the SAR image. Once the effects of local incidence angle on the radar backscatter were defined, the radiometric correction was performed by an empirical fuction that was derived from the relationship between the geometric parameters and mean radar backscatter. The correction effects were examined by ground truth data.

  • In order to obtain high-quality images by motion compensation in the airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), accurate motion sensing in image acquisition section is necessary. Especially, reducing relative position error and discontinuity in motion sensing is important. To overcome the problem, we propose a pre-parametric error modeling (P-PEM) algorithm which is a real-time motion sensing algorithm for the airborne SAR in this paper. P-PEM is an extended version of parametric error modeling (PEM) method which is a motion sensing algorithm to mitigate the errors in the previous work. PEM estimates polynomial coefficients of INS error which can be assumed as a polynomial in the short term. Otherwise, P-PEM estimates polynomial coefficients in advance and uses at image acquisition section. Simulation results show that the P-PEM reduces relative position error and discontinuity effectively in real-time.

  • With the expansion of the shipping and port logistics industry in the 21st century, the traffic density is continuously increased because of the increase in volumes of world sea freight and fleets, as well as the increase in the causes of potential marine accidents, such as ship collisions and stranding. Accordingly, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has requested that the installation and operation of VTS should be applied in areas with high risk of marine traffic, and the request should be included as one of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations. In this paper, the fundamental requirements of the radar system for vessel traffic services were analyzed and the analyzing factors were based on the IALA guideline.s This paper also includes results for the requirement and recommendation analysis on detection distance, target separation, and the target position accuracy of X-band radar. Also, to check if it satisfies the requirement of detection distance, range and azimuth separation of small point targets, and target position accuracy from the IALA guidelines, the test was conducted through the radar image acquired at the VTS center, and hence, the validity of the technical performance requirements was confirmed.

  • The success of target reconstruction in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging system is greatly dependent on the coherent detection. Primary causes of incoherent detection are uncompensated target or sensor motion, random turbulence in propagation media, wrong path in radar platform, and etc. And these appear as multiplicative phase error to the echoed signal, which consequently, causes fatal degradations such as fading or dislocation of target image. In this paper, we present iterative phase error estimation scheme which uses echoed data in all temporal frequencies. We started with analyzing wave equation for one point target and extend to overall echoed data from the target scene - The two wave equations governing the SAR signal at two temporal frequencies of the radar signal are combined to derive a method to reconstruct the complex phase error function. Eventually, this operation attains phase error correction algorithm from the total received SAR signal. We verify the success of the proposed algorithm by applying it to the simulated spotlight-mode SAR data.
