  • In this paper, we describe a new trademark retrieval system based upon the content or the shape of trademark. The system has an on-line graphical user interface for the World Wide Web (WWW) that allows user to provide a query in forms of a sketch or a visual image to search for similar trademarks from database. User interfaces for the WWW were implemented by utilizing HTML and Java applets. The query can occur in arbitrary size and orientation. A shape representation scheme invariant to scale and rotation was developed to measure the similarity between two trademarks using the magnitude of Zernike moments as a feature set. Performance evaluation has been carried out with a database of 3,000 trademarks. It takes only about 0.6 second for the retrieval on a 200 MHz Pentium PC. The average recall of the original one among top 30 candidates queried by noisy or deformed images was 100%.

  • Spatial match retrieval methods for iconic image databases recognize an image document as several icon symbols. Therefore the iconic symbols are used as primary keys to index the image document. When a user requires content-based retrieval ofimages, a spatial match retrieval method converts a query image into iconic symbols and then retrieves relevant images by accessing stored images. In order to support content-based image retrieval efficiently, we, in this paper, propose spatial match retrieval methods using signatures for iconic image databases. For this, we design new index representations of two-dimensional iconic images and explain implemented system.. In addition, we compare the conventional 9-DLT and our two-dimensional image retrieval method in terms of retrieval precision and recall ratio. We show that our method is more efficient than the conventional method.

  • In this paper we propose a content-based image retrieval method that can search large image databases efficiently by color, texture, and shape content. Quantized RGB histograms and the dominant triple (hue, saturation, and value), which are extracted from quantized HSV joint histogram in the local image region, are used for representing global/local color information in the image. Entropy and maximum entry from co-occurrence matrices are used for texture information and edge angle histogram is used for representing shape information. Relevance feedback approach, which has coupled proposed features, is used for obtaining better retrieval accuracy. Simulation results illustrate the above method provides 77.5 percent precision rate without relevance feedback and increased precision rate using relevance feedback for overall queries. We also present a new indexing method that supports fast retrieval in large image databases. Tree structures constructed by k-means algorithm, along with the idea of triangle inequality, eliminate candidate images for similarity calculation between query image and each database image. We find that the proposed method reduces calculation up to average 92.9 percent of the images from direct comparison.

  • With the popularity of sensor-rich environments, smartphones have become one of the major platforms for obtaining and sharing information. Since it is difficult to utilize GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) inside the area with many buildings, the localization of smartphone in this case is considered as a challenging task. To resolve problem of localization using smartphone a four step image-based localization method and procedure is proposed. To improve the localization accuracy of smartphone datasets, MMS (Mobile Mapping System) and Google Street View were utilized. In our approach first, the searching for candidate matching image is performed by the query image of smartphone's using GNSS observation. Second, the SURF (Speed-Up Robust Features) image matching between the smartphone image and reference dataset is done and the wrong matching points are eliminated. Third, the geometric transformation is performed using the matching points with 2D affine transformation. Finally, the smartphone location and attitude estimation are done by PnP (Perspective-n-Point) algorithm. The location of smartphone GNSS observation is improved from the original 10.204m to a mean error of 3.575m. The attitude estimation is lower than 25 degrees from the 92.4% of the adjsuted images with an average of 5.1973 degrees.

  • Content-based image retrieval(CBIR) is the retrieval technique which uses the contents of images. However, in contrast to text data, multimedia data are ambiguous and there is a big difference between system's low-level representation and human's high-level concept. So it doesn't always mean that near points in the vector space are similar to user. We call this the semantic-gap problem. Due to this problem, performance of image retrieval is not good. To solve this problem, the relevance feedback(RF) which uses user's feedback information is used. But existing RF doesn't consider user's region-of-interest(ROI), and therefore, irrelevant regions are used in computing new query points. Because the system doesn't know user's ROI, RF is proceeded in the image-level. We propose a new ROI RF method which guides a user to select ROI from relevant images for the retrieval of complex satellite image, and this improves the accuracy of the image retrieval by computing more accurate query points in this paper. Also we propose a pruning technique which improves the accuracy of the image retrieval by using images not selected by the user in this paper. Experiments show the efficiency of the proposed ROI RF and the pruning technique.

  • Recently, protection of personal information is getting more important. Many countries have legislated about the protection of personal information. Now, the protection of relevant personal information is required not for a simple image of enterprises but law obligation. Most databases in enterprises used to store customers' names, addresses and credit card numbers with no exceptions. The personal information about a person is sensitive, and this asset is strategic. Therefore, most enterprises make an effort to preserve personal information safely. If someone, however, hacks password information of DBMS manager, no one can trust this system. Therefore, encryption is required based in order to protect data in the database. Because of database encryption, however, it is the problem of database performance in terms of computation time and the limited SQL query. Thus, we proposed an efficient query method to solve the problem of encrypted data in this paper.

  • As the importance and utilization of multimedia data increases, it becomes necessary to represent and manage multimedia data within database systems. In this paper, we designed and implemented an image retrieval system which support efficient management and intelligent retrieval of image data using concept hierarchy and data mining techniques. We stored the image information intelligently in databases using concept hierarchy. To support intelligent retrievals and efficient web services, our system automatically extracts and stores the user information, the user's query information, and the feature data of images. The proposed system integrates user metadata and image metadata to support various retrieval methods on image data.

  • The emotional information processing is to simulate and recognize human sensibility, sensuality or emotion, to realize natural and harmonious human-machine interface. This paper proposes an emotion-based image retrieval method. In this method, user can choose a linguistic query among some emotional adjectives. Then the system shows some corresponding representative images that are pre-evaluated by experts. Again the user can select a representative one among the representative images to initiate traditional content-based image retrieval (CBIR). By this proposed method any CBIR can be easily expanded as emotion-based image retrieval. In CBIR of our system, we use several color and texture visual descriptors recommended by MPEG-7. We also propose a fuzzy similarity measure based on Choquet integral in the CBIR system. For the communication between system and user, a relevance feedback mechanism is used to represent human subjectivity in image retrieval. This can improve the performance of image retrieval, and also satisfy the user's individual preference.

  • In this paper, we propose an accurate and fast keyword spotting system for searching user-specified keyword in Hangul document images by using two-level image-to-image matching. The system is composed of character segmentation, creating a query image, feature extraction, and matching procedure. Two different feature vectors are used in the matching procedure. An experiment using 1600 Hangul word images from 8 document images, downloaded from the website of Korea Information Science Society, demonstrates that the proposed system is superior to conventional image-based document retrieval systems.

  • Image annotations allow users to access a large image database with textual queries. But since the surrounding text of Web images is generally noisy. an efficient image annotation and retrieval system is highly desired. which requires effective image search techniques. Data mining techniques can be adopted to de-noise and figure out salient terms or phrases from the search results. Clustering algorithms make it possible to represent visual features of images with finite symbols. Annotationbased image search engines can obtains thousands of images for a given query; but their results also consist of visually noise. In this paper. we present a new algorithm Double-Circles that allows a user to remove noise results and characterize more precise representative annotations. We demonstrate our approach on images collected from Flickr image search. Experiments conducted on real Web images show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model.
