The Sangeun ore deposit is located in a volcanic belt within the Gyeongsang Basin in south western Korea. The ore deposit is of representative epithermal Au-Ag quartz vein type developed in lapilli tuff. This paper presents the mineralization with special emphasis on mineral zoning of the deposits. Principal points are summarized as follows: (1) Four stages of mineralization are recognized based on macrostructures. From ealier to later they are stage I(arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz), stage II(Au-Ag bearing Pb-Zn-quartz), stage III(barren quartz), and stage IV(dickite-quartz). (2) Electrum principally occurs with arsenopyrite and galena in stage II, and has chemical compositions of 72.9-67.1 Ag atom %, and has Ag/Au ratio of 2.69-2.04. (3) Sphalerite varies in its FeS content according to the mineralization stages; 22.03-18.60 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage IB, 16.11-8.64 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage II. (4) Alteration zones of mineral assemblage, from the vein to the wall-rock, consist of sericite - quartz - pyrite, sericite - quartz - dickite, sericite - chlorite plagioclase respectively.

It was analyzed that the vibration and frequency characteristics for quartz crystal using a finite element method, ANSYS. It was investigated that the resonant frequency of quartz crystal by fixing the diameter of quartz crystal for the various its thickness. There were also studied that the resonant frequency value with different electrode thin films of Au, Ag and Al. As the result of this study, the best condition for quartz crystal unit was determined by the finite element method. If the thickness of quartz crystal is smaller than 0.2 mm, the high frequency over 8.102 MHz was obtained. In addition, as to the change of resonant frequency on electrode thin film, Al turned out to be superior to Au or Ag in frequency response.

We present a retrieval method to obtain dust backscatter coefficient from the mixed Asian dust and pollutant layer. In the present study, vertically resolved quartz (silicon dioxide, silica) concentration was calculated using Raman scattering signals from quartz at 546 nm. Dust concentration was obtained based on typical mass percentage of quartz in Asian dust. The highest value of dust concentration at 3.7 km in March 21, 2010 was 22.3 and 10.9 ${\mu}gm^{-3}$ according to the quartz percentage in Asian dust as 65 and 30% based on literature survey, respectively. OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosol and Clouds) simulations were conducted to calculate dust backscatter coefficient. The retrieved dust concentration was used as an input parameter for the OPAC calculations. Utilization of quartz Raman channel in Lidar measurements is considered useful for distinguishing optical properties of dust and nondust aerosol in the mixing state of Asian dust.
Geochemical studies on gold-bearing quartz veins and granitic wallrocks from the Mugeug mine were carried out in order to investigate primary dispersion patterns of elements and to quantify primary dispersion widths of elements with distance from the gold-bearing quartz veins. The best fitting model of dispersion pattern in altered wallrock around the gold-bearing quartz veins is an exponential function for Au, As, Sb, $Na_2O$ and Sr, and a quadratic function for CaO, $K_2O$, MnO, Ba, Rb and Cs. The primary dispersion widths are 15~343 cm in the hanging wall, and 33~173 cm in the footwall. The width of primary dispersion in the hanging wall is twice as thick as that in the footwall mainly due to the thermal effect and volatile components. The primary dispersion width is increased as the increase of gold-bearing quartz vein width and contents of As and Sb in gold-bearing quartz veins, but is not related to Au content in gold-bearing quartz veins.

Low soda alumina powder was fabricated using silica (${\alpha}$-quartz) as an agent for removing soda components in the alumina. Quartz powder 2 mm in size was added to aluminum hydroxide obtained through the Bayer process, and then the mixture was heated at various temperatures. Finally, the heat-treated powders were sieved for classification. In this study, the effects of the quartz amount and heating temperature on the mechanism of removing soda were examined. A minimum soda content of 0.005 wt% was observed at the conditions of 15 wt% quartz (based on $Al(OH)_3$ amount) heat-treated at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 8 h. The soda components, such as $Na_2O$, NaOH, and $Na_2CO_3$, in alumina were ionized and activated at high temperature, and this facilitated the reaction with quartz silica and alumina producing nepheline. The advantages of using quartz include low iron content and low cost in comparison with the conventional de-soda process using chamotte, another silicate mineral.

A newly designed Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in a quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction (W-tip-Quartz- REF) was fabricated and its electrochemical performance was compared with a conventional Pyrex tube-based Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode (Py-REF). The results of the electrochemical potential measurements with the W-tip-Quartz- REF and the Py-REF in the LiCl-KCl eutectic melts for a wide temperature range proved that the oxide layer on the surface of the tungsten metal tip provided a high ionic conduction. Stability of our newly designed W-tip- Quartz-REF was tested by measuring a junction potential for 12 hours at 700${^{\circ}C}$. The results of the cyclic voltammetric measurement indicated that the Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in the quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction can provide a good performance for a wide temperature range.
According to the element analysis of Korean Quartz Porphyry, the ignition loss related to porosity was 7.03, 3.36, 2.09 and 0.73% in the order of Suanbo, Yeachen, Angang and Kyongsan. Extraction of minerals in deionized water and elimination effect of heavy metals in water by Quartz Porphyry were examined. When the Quartz Porphyry of the Suanbo, Yeachen of 0.5~2.0% concentration and the Quartz Porphyry of the Angang of 1.5% concentration were immersed and stirred in deionized water for 3 hours at 180rpm, various minerals concentration of the all stirred water were suitable for potable water. But Quartz Porphyry of the Yeachen was not suitable for potable water because of excess extraction of iron. The elimination rate of lead in single solution was 99% by Quartz Porphyry of the Suanbo, Yeachen and Angang of 3% concentration, Cadmium by Quartz Porphyry of the Suanbo of 7% concentration was eliminated about 98% in 1 hour. The copper was significantly eliminated in Quartz Porphyry of low concentration. Especially in Quartz Porphyry of Angang at 0.4% concentration, the rate of ion exchange was 99% in 4 hours. But elimination effect of arsenic in water by Korean Quartz Porphyry was very low.

This study was performed to estimate quartz contents in the both bulk and airborne dust samples and to determine particle size distribution of airborne dust from the selected foundry operations. Total dust samples were collected by a 37mm cassette and respirable by a 10 mm nylon cyclone. Particle size distributions were determined by a Marple's 8-stage cascade impactor at the melting, molding, shakeout and finishing operations. The presence of elements in the dust samples were confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy equipped with the energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The quartz contents were estimated using the intensity of the absorption peak of quartz at 799 cm-l by the Fourie Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results were as follows: 1. The analysis of data from cascade Impactor showed bimodal distributions of particle size at the melting, molding and shakeout operations. Mass median aerodynamic diameters for the distributions determined by histogram were $0.48-1.65{\mu}m$ for small and $13.43-19.58{\mu}m$ for large modes. In the dust samples collected at the finishing operations, however, only a large mode of $18.89{\mu}m$ was found. 2. The percentages of total to respirable dust concentration calculated from the impactor data ranged from 42 % to 66 %. The average concentrations of respirable dust by cyclone were $0.85-1.28mg/m^3$ collected from the workers, and were $0.23-0.56mg/m^3$ from the areas surveyed. Dust concentrations of personal samples were statistically significantly higher than those of area samples. The highest dust concentration was obtained from the personal samples of the finishing operation. 3. The mean percentages of silicon and oxygen estimated by SEM-EDXA in the bulk samples ranged from 35.83 % to 36.02 % and from 39.93 %-41.64 %, respectively. 4. The average quartz contents estimated by FTIR in the respirable dust from personal samples ranged from 4.32 % to 5.36 % and 4.54 % to 4.70 % in the bulk samples. No statistical difference of quartz content was found between foundry operations. In this study, quartz content was quantified by FTIR. Although no statistically significant difference in quartz content between airborne and bulk, samples and between different foundry operations was found, it is recommended that quartz content in the individual sample of respirable dust be analyzed and the results be used either to select an applicable quartz limits or to calculate the exposure limit. Further studies, however, are needed to compare the results by FTIR and XRD since it is reported that the quartz content determined by FTIR is different from that by XRD.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate quartz concentrations in airborne respirable dust and particle size-related quartz concentrations. Methods: Respirable dust samples were collected using a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone equipped with a 37 mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size PVC filter. Dust samples were collected with a Marple's personal cascade impactor from stone grinding operations in five stone-related business located in the Gyeongsangbuk-do area. Results: The geometric mean of quartz concentration in the respirable dust was $0.170mg/m^3$, and the rate of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit(KOEL) was 93.3%. The quartz concentration by particle size shows that it was the highest($0.115mg/m^3$) in stage 5($3.50-6.00{\mu}m$), which corresponds with the size of respirable particle. The smaller the particle sizes were, the higher quartz the content became. The mass fractions of inhalable, thoracic, and respirable dust were 72.1%, 36.0%, and 14.4%. Conclusions: The rate of the quartz concentration in respirable dust from stone grinding operations exceeding the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values was 100%, which means proper work environmental management is required through regular working environmental measurements. Given that the stone grinding operations had a higher small size dust concentrations, there is a need to reduce respirable dust, such as through wet operation and local exhaust ventilation.
