  • The geopolymer technique may be a future-oriented technology for saving energies and resources. This technique requires 3 fundamental elements so-called filler, hardener and geopolymer liquor being generally an alkaline silicate solution. Quartz powder, water quenched granulated blast furnace slag and sodium silicate solution prepared from $Na_2O\cdot2SiO_2$were chosen for these three elements. After mixing these starting materials in appropriate proportions, monoliths were prepared by casting at room temperature. Strength tests showed the following results for 28d age speciment: 7.9-12.7 MPa in flexural strength and 20.2-32.8 MPa in compressive strength, depending on geopolymer liquor/solid ratio, P/S and fineness of the quartz powders used.

  • The quartz glasses were prepared by fumed silica powders sintering method at $1210^{\circ}C$, $1230^{\circ}C$, $1250^{\circ}C$ in air and the effect of sintering temperature on their properties were investigated. The X-ray diffraction pattern, the OH concentration, the light transmittance, the apparent porosity and the density were analyzed. The transparent quartz glass were obtained above $1230^{\circ}C$. The OH-group and macroscopic pores were removed above $1230^{\circ}C$ and highest density and light transmittance were obtained at $1250^{\circ}C$.

  • Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool for gem identification and research. Therefore, this study was focused to a method of the identification of amethyst, citrine, rock quartz and jadeite by the FT-IR. The FT-IR measurement was very effective in judgement of amethyst, citrine and rock quartz whether they are natural and synthetic. And FT-IR was very useful for the distinguishment of the natural jadeite (A-Jade) from wax/polymer-impregnated jadeite (B-Jade). Such technique will be helpful to identify new challenges present by treatments and synthetics.

  • Quartz glass panel was prepared by a colloidal silica through the heat-treatment only without any additives in wet-chemical method. This colloidal silica used in slurry process has the uniform distribution of particle size and lower cost. The results show that 6N as a degree of purity and the 86 percentage of violet transmittance in 1mm thickness. AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) pattern shows that the surface roughness are less than lnm. Also, we investigated the characteristic of quartz panel according to the concentration and distribution of hydroxyl group, viscosity and thermal expansion coefficient.

  • Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting is an emerging technology for precision cutting of difficult-to-machining materials with the distinct advantages of no thermal effect, high machinability, high flexibility and small cutting forces. This paper investigated theoretical and experimental cutting characteristics associated with abrasive waterjet cutting of quartz GE214. It is shown that the proper variations of several cutting parameters such as waterjet pressure, cutting speed and cutting depth improve the roughness on workpiece surfaces produced by AWJ cutting. From the experimental results by AWJ cutting of quartz GE214, the optimal cutting conditions to improve the surface roughness were proposed and discussed.

  • Molybdenum as by-products of Sangdong tungsten mine occurrs in the form of molybdenite in quartz vein. The molybdenum contents of scheelite in Sangdong ore bodies ranges from trace to 8%, therefore the scheelites show variable fluorescence colores under ultra-violet lamp (short wave). The fluorescence color are in order high content of molybdenum, yellow, white and blue. The yellow fluorescing scheelite is dominant in upper ore vein, otherwise the blue fluorescent variety is dominant in lower ore vein. The fluorescence color of scheelite in the main ore vein show zonal distribution becoming progressively more blue outerwards, contrary more yellow innerwards, and even in single scheelite crystal, simillar zonal pattern is observed, too. Molybdenite occurrs as flakes or elongated blades at the margins of the quartz vein only molybdenite bearing quartz veins but also other sulfides mineral bearing quartz veins have mainly blue flourescing scheelites. We suggest that the molybdenum contents of the early stage ore solution are progressively decreased by a subsequent crystallization of the yellow fluorescing scheelites.

  • Plasma treatment time was optimized to maximize the bonding strength between silicon and quartz. Bonding strength between the silicon and quartz is related to a surface energy which can be calculated by contact angle measurement. It was found that optimized time to get maximized surface energy was 15 sec. Silicon and quartz wafers were treated with $O_2$ plasma under different time splits and then bonded together. Bonding strength of the bonded wafers was measured by shear test. It was verified that the highest bonding strength was obtained when the silicon and quartz wafers were treated for 15 seconds. The maximum bonding strength exceeded the fracture strength of silicon.

  • In this paper, micro cantilevers which are made of two different materials - fused quartz and single crystalline silicon - and have similar dimensions were fabricated and their mechanical Q-factors were evaluated to compare intrinsic damping properties of those two materials. Resonant frequencies and Q-factors were measured for the cantilevers having fixed widths and thicknesses, and different lengths. The measured Q-values are in a range of 64,000 - 108,000 for fused quartz cantilevers, and 31,000 - 35,000 for silicon cantilevers, respectively. Experimental results support high Q-factors of fused quartz compared to single crystalline silicon due to its good intrinsic damping properties.

  • Analytical approach was followed in this work under both the steady state and transient operating conditions to find optimum boundary conditions, where the optically accessible quartz engine can run safely without breaking. Temperature and stress distribution was predicted by FEM analysis. In order to validate thermal boundary condition, model reliability and constraint, outside cylinder temperature was measured and previous study was also followed up numerically. To reduce thermal stress level, three types of outside cooling (natural, moderate forced and intensive forced convection) were considered. Effects of clamping force and combustion pressure were conducted to investigate mechanical stress level. Cylinder thickness, was changed to fine the optimum cylinder thickness. The versatile results achieved from this work can be basic indication, which is capable of causing a sudden quartz cylinder breaking during fired operation.

  • Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were massively produced by the catalytic reaction of C$_2$H$_2$ - Fe(CO)$\sub$5/ mixture at 750 - 950$^{\circ}C$ in a quartz tube reactor and over quartz substrates. Well-aligned MWNT array grows perpendicular to the quartz tube reactor and the quartz substrates at an average of 60 nm in diameter and up to several thousands of micrometers in length. This method does not require any pretreatment of substrates and CNTs are grown at atmospheric pressure. It could be suitable for mass production of multiwalled nanotubes. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images of the nanotubes deposited on the substrates allowed us to monitor the quality of MWNTs grown under different operating conditions.
