In this talk, I will introduce two topics. The first topic is the polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using graphene oxide quantum dots as emissive center. More specifically, the energy transfer mechanism as well as the origin of white electroluminescence in the PLED were investigated. The second topic is the facile synthesis of eco-friendly III-V colloidal quantum dots and their application to light emitting diodes. Polymer (organic) light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using quantum dots (QDs) as emissive materials have received much attention as promising components for next-generation displays. Despite their outstanding properties, toxic and hazardous nature of QDs is a serious impediment to their use in future eco-friendly opto-electronic device applications. Owing to the desires to develop new types of nanomaterial without health and environmental effects but with strong opto-electrical properties similar to QDs, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted great interest as promising luminophores. However, the origin of electroluminescence (EL) from GQDs incorporated PLEDs is unclear. Herein, we synthesized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) using a modified hydrothermal deoxidization method and characterized the PLED performance using GOQDs blended poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) as emissive layer. Simple device structure was used to reveal the origin of EL by excluding the contribution of and contamination from other layers. The energy transfer and interaction between the PVK host and GOQDs guest were investigated using steady-state PL, time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experiments revealed that white EL emission from the PLED originated from the hybridized GOQD-PVK complex emission with the contributions from the individual GOQDs and PVK emissions. (Sci Rep., 5, 11032, 2015). New III-V colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using the hot-injection method and the QD-light emitting diodes (QLEDs) using these CQDs as emissive layer were demonstrated for the first time. The band gaps of the III-V CQDs were varied by varying the metal fraction and by particle size control. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results show that the crystal states of the III-V CQDs consist of multi-phase states; multi-peak photoluminescence (PL) resulted from these multi-phase states. Inverted structured QLED shows green EL emission and a maximum luminance of ~45 cd/m2. This result shows that III-V CQDs can be a good substitute for conventional cadmium-containing CQDs in various opto-electronic applications, e.g., eco-friendly displays. (Un-published results).

This study emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and response to COVID-19, leading to the development of a rapid diagnostic kit using quantum dots. The research focuses on finely tuning bioconjugation with quantum dots to enhance the accuracy and sensitivity of COVID-19 diagnosis. We have developed a COVID-19 rapid diagnostic kit that exhibits a sensitivity more than 50 times higher than existing COVID-19 diagnostic kits. Quantum dots enable the accurate detection of COVID-19 viral antigens even at low concentrations, providing a rapid response in the early stages of infection. The COVID-19 quantum dot diagnostic kit offers quick analysis time, utilizing the quantum properties of particles to swiftly measure COVID-19 infection for immediate response and isolation measures. Additionally, this diagnostic kit allows for multiple analyses with ease, as multiple quantum dots can detect various antigens and antibodies simultaneously in a single experiment. This efficiency enhances testing, reduces sample requirements, and lowers experimental costs. The application of this diagnostic technology is anticipated in the future for early diagnosis and monitoring of other infectious diseases.
We investigated the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy of colloidal InZnP/ZnSe/ZnS (core/shell/shell) quantum dots with varying ZnSe and ZnS shell thickness in the 278~363 K temperature range. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence of the InZnP-based quantum dot samples reveal red-shifting of the photoluminescence peaks, thermal quenching of photoluminescence, and broadening of bandwidth with increasing temperature. The degree of band-gap shifting and line broadening as a function of temperature is affected little by shell composition and thickness. However, the thermal quenching of the photoluminescence is strongly dependent on the shell components. The irreversible photoluminescence quenching behavior is dominant for thin-shell-deposited InZnP quantum dots, whereas thick-shelled InZnP quantum dots exhibit superior thermal stability of the photoluminescence intensity.

TiO2 quantum dots were synthesized by a hydrothermal method after precipitating titanium hydroxide using Ti(SO4)2 and NaOH solutions. A simple hydrothermal apparatus was manufactured in the laboratory and operated at temperature 100℃, 130℃, and 160℃. Spherical, uniform, and non-aggregated approximately 15 nm in size TiO2 quantum dots were obtained. Properties of synthesized TiO2 quantum dots were characterized using UV/Vis/NIR spectrophotometry, XRD diffractometry, and TEM.
InP quantum dots were grown by using the molecular beam epitaxy technique. Quantum dots are connected and composed string-like one-dimensional structure due to the strain field along [110] crystal direction. Two prominent photoluminescence transitions from normal quantum dots and string-like one-dimensional structure were observed which show strong optical anisotropy along [1-10] and [110] crystal directions. Both peaks also showed blue-shift while rotating emission polarization from [1-10] to [110] direction. Such optical transition behaviors are the consequence of the valence band mixing caused by strain field along the [110] crystal direction.
Red color light emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated using CdSe/CdZnS quantum dots (QDs). During the device fabrication process, oxygen plasma treatment on the ITO surface was performed to improve the interfacial contact between ITO anode and the hole injection layer. CdSe/CdZnS quantum dots were cross-linked to remove their surrounded organic surfactants. The device shows red emission at 622 nm, which is consistent with the dimension of the QDs (band gap=1.99 eV). The luminance shows 6026% improvement compared with that of LEDs fabricated without oxygen plasma treatment and quantum dots cross-linking process. This approach would be useful for the fabrication of high-performance QLEDs with ITO electrode and PEDOT:PSS hole injection layers.
In recent years, spins of confined carriers in quantum dots are promising candidates for the logical units in quantum computers. In many concepts developed so far, the individual spin q-bits are being manipulated by magnetic fields, which is difficult to achieve. In the current research the recent developments of spin based quantum computing has been reviewed. Then, Single-hole spin in a molecular quantum dots with less energy and more speed has been electrically manipulated and the results have been compared with the magnetic manipulating of the spin.

InP quantum dots (QDs) have attracted researchers' interest due to their applicability in quantum dot light-emitting displays (QLED) or biomarkers for detecting cancers or viruses. The surface or interface control of InP QD core/ shell has substantially increased quantum efficiency, with a quantum yield of 100% reached by introducing HF to inhibit oxide generation. In this study, we focused on the control of bandgap energy of quantum dots by changing the Zn/(In+Zn) ratio in the In(Zn)P core. Zinc incorporation can change the photoluminescent light colors of green, yellow, orange, and red. Diluting a solution of as-synthesized QDs by more than 100 times did not show any quenching effects by the Förster resonance energy transfer phenomenon between neighboring QDs.
Silicon quantum dots base on photoluminescent porous silicon were prepared from an electrochemical etching of n-type silicon wafer (boron-dopped<100> orientation, resistivity of 1~10 ${\Omega}-cm$) and used as a alcohol sensor. Silicon quantum dots displayed an emission band at the wavelength of 675 nm with an excitation wavelength of 480 nm. Photoluminescence of silicon quantum dots was quenched in the presence of alcohol vapors such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol. Quenching efficiencies of 21.5, 32.5, and 45.8% were obtained for isopropanol, ethanol, and methanol, respectively. A linear relationship was obtained between quenching efficiencies and vapor pressure of analytes used. Quenching photoluminescence was recovered upon introducing of fresh air after the detection of alcohol. This provides easy fabrication of alcohol sensor based on porous silicon.
