웨어러블 센싱 기반의 Quantified Self 기술동향 (State-of-the-Art on Quantified Self Technology Based on Wearable Sensing)

  • Quantified Self란 개인의 일상활동에서 신체적 정신적 상태를 센싱 및 트래킹하여 이를 수치화함으로써 자신의 상태를 분석하고 삶의 질을 개선하기 위한 방법을 연구하여 실생활에 적용하는 활동을 의미한다. 이는 최근 헬스와 피트니스에 활용 가능한 개인 센서 및 웨어러블 기기의 급속한 보급과 다양한 개인 정보 트래킹 기기의 출현으로 개인의 일상경험을 모니터링하고, 생성되는 정보를 수집, 통합 분석을 통해 새로운 개인화 서비스를 제공하기 위한 기술개발 이슈로 주목받고 있다. Quantified Self 데이터는 초기의 수작업으로 트래킹하여 수집한 소량의 관리 가능한 데이터 세트에서 점차 대용량의 Quantified Self 빅데이터 세트로 크기가 증가하고 있으며, 개인정보의 통합분석을 위한 빅데이터 모델과 자동적인 셀프-트래킹 플랫폼으로서의 웨어러블 컴퓨터 기술과 응용의 기대치를 증가시키고 있다. 본고에서는 Quantified Self 정의와 기술 및 서비스 동향에 대해 살펴보고, 웨어러블 센싱 기반 트래킹 기기의 개발사례와 Quantified Self의 주요이슈와 미래전망에 대해 조망해 본다.

Sustaining the Use of Quantified-Self Technology: A Theoretical Extension and Empirical Test

  • Quantified-self technologies (QSTs) provide functions for users to collect, track, and monitor personal data for self-reflection and acquisition of self-knowledge. Although QSTs require prolonged use to reap the attendant benefits, many users stop using their devices or tracking within weeks or months. To address this issue, this study seeks to determine ways to sustain the use of QSTs. Combining motivational affordance theory with technology continuance theory, this study develops a theoretical model that accounts for an individual's continued intention to use a QST. Within the proposed model, unique QST affordances were identified as antecedents of individual motivation in relation to technology continuance, and their different roles in stimulating hedonic, utilitarian, and eudaimonic motivations were examined. The model was tested using data collected from 180 QST users. Results demonstrate that although utilitarian and eudaimonic motivations are complementary forces in determining continuance intention, hedonic motivation loses its predictive power in favor of eudaimonic motivation. Tracking, visualizing, and sharing affordances play different roles in elevating user motivations. The sharing affordance does not influence utilitarian and eudaimonic motivations, but it positively influences hedonic motivation. This research contributes to the literature on technology continuance by shifting scholarly attention from hedonic-utilitarian duality to eudaimonic motivation, characterized by meaning, self-growth, and pursuit of excellence.

  • 잠금화면은 현대인들이 모바일 플랫폼에서 가장 자주 대면하는 인터페이스 중 하나이다. 조사에 따르면 스마트폰 사용자들은 일일 평균 150번 잠금해제를 수행하지만[1], 패턴인식, 비밀번호와 같은 잠금화면 인터페이스등은 보안 및 인증의 목적을 제외하곤 별 다른 이익을 제공하지 못하는 것이 현 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 보안용도의 기존 잠금화면을 전방 카메라를 활용한 얼굴 및 표정인식 어플리케이션으로 대체하여 표정 데이터를 수집한 뒤 실시간 표정 및 감정 변화 피드백을 제공하는 인터페이스를 제시한다. 본 연구에선 Quantified Lockscreen 어플리케이션을 통한 실험을 통해 1) 잠금화면을 활용한 비침습적인 인터페이스를 통해 연속적인 표정데이터 획득과 감정패턴을 분석할 수 있는 것을 검증했으며 2) 개인화된 학습 및 분석으로 표정인식 및 감정 검출의 정확도를 개선하였으며 3) 표정으로부터 추론된 감정 데이터의 타당성을 강화하기 위한 양괄식 검증기법을 도입하여 감정 검출의 다중채널 및 다중입력 방법론의 가능성을 확인하였다.

  • 심뇌혈관 질환은 국내 사망률 2위를 차지하고 있는 주요 만성질환이다. 이 질환은 생활습관의 개선으로 예방할 수 있어서 평소 건강관리가 중요하다. 하지만 국내에서 대부분 예방관리 프로그램은 안내 책자, 강의 등 소극적인 방법으로 대응하고 있어 질환 예방관리의 실효성이 떨어지고 있다. 현재 ICT 기술의 발달로 스마트 헬스케어 시장이 발달함에 따라, 개인의 건강상태를 측정하고 신체 데이터를 수치로 나타내는 수치화된 자아(Quantified self)가 웨어러블 디바이스를 통해 확산하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 심뇌혈관 질환의 적극적인 예방과 관리를 위해 헬스케어 웨어러블 디바이스를 탐색하고 논의하였다. 먼저 현재 상용화되고 있거나 심뇌혈관 질환과 관련된 헬스케어 웨어러블 디바이스들의 사례들을 부착 형태에 따라 손목형, 의복형, 부착형으로 분류한 뒤 기능 분석했다. 이를 종합해 웨어러블 디바이스를 통한 심뇌혈관 질환의 예방법과 관련 있는 건강활동 트래킹, 생체신호 트래킹, 의료진과 피드백 기능으로 분류해 비교분석 하였다. 이를 통해 질환에 대한 적극적인 자가 헬스케어의 행태가 개선될 수 있음을 기대할 수 있으며, 향후 본 연구를 통해 질환의 예방 연구의 다학제적인 활성 기제로 작용할 수 있을 것이다.

What is the gold standard of the dental anxiety scale?

  • It is important to understand patients' anxiety and fear about dental treatment. A patient's anxiety can be quantified through a self-report questionnaire, and many related scales have been developed. In this review, I tried to find out which scale is most suitable for the patient's dental anxiety and fear evaluation by examining the contents of previously developed scales and comparing the strengths and weaknesses of each scale.

자동귀환 서랍의 감성품질에 대한 설계인자 영향 분석 (Effects of Design Parameters on the Ergonomic Quality of a Self-Closing Drawer)

  • Self-closing drawers are used in high-end products, such as furniture, home appliances, and a range of other storage devices. In this study, a self-closing mechanism is proposed. A system consisting of a friction latch, constant force spring, rotary damper with rack, and pinion is developed. The retracting drawer can be latched at any position and can be reactivated by simple touch. The constant force spring and rotary damper offer smooth closing action. The ergonomic quality of the closing action is quantified by an index based on velocity-time behavior. The effects of various design parameters are analyzed with a dynamics model and experimentally validated by prototype testing.

  • In the cosmetics field, facial skins have been classified into four types according to self estimation as well as physiological parameters. The aim of this study is to understand skin condition in the levels and composition of stratum corneum (SC) lipids, and to propose new classification for skin types. We assessed the relationship between the SC lipid composition and the self-estimated skin types or physiological parameters of the skin. Sensitive skin has been of great concern over the last decades, and it should be recognized as a skin type. Therefore, we also investigated the influence of the SC lipid composition on variations of sensitivity evaluated by the Stinging Test. Fifty-five healthy Japanese women aged 22-44 participated in this study. Skin biopsies were taken from facial skin using polyethylene sheet with cyanoacrylate. SC lipids were extracted and separated into individual lipid classes. The combined ceramides and cholesterol were quantified by HPTLC. Free fatty acid was quantified according to the ACS-ACOD method. Instrumental measurements were made at the site around the biopsy. In addition, the Stinging Test and a sensory evaluation questionnaire were administered to all subjects. The generally recognized O-D skin type classification is dependent on the consumer`s subjective assessment with respect to their skin troubles. The product of hydration state and skin surface lipid level showed a significant correlation with self-estimated skin types. The oily-dry skin type classified according to physiological parameters as well as SC lipid levels should be characterized as delicate skin with its barrier function deteriorating in the winter. Two groups of sensitive skin were established. One is the barrier function of the skin is deteriorated, and another is the sebaceous gland activity is in decline.

  • In this paper, we introduce the advanced Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Network based on optimized FPN by evolutionary algorithm and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization, especially genetic algorithms (GAs). The proposed model gives rise to a structurally and parametrically optimized network through an optimal parameters design available within Fuzzy Polynomial Neuron(FPN) by means of GA. Through the consecutive process of such structural and parametric optimization, an optimized and flexible the proposed model is generated in a dynamic fashion. The performance of the proposed model is quantified through experimentation that exploits standard data already used in fuzzy modeling. These results reveal superiority of the proposed networks over the existing fuzzy and neural models.

  • With an increase in the use of low rank coals in power plants, various operational issues were raised in the fuel storage and supply, combustion, boiler and flue gas treatment systems. In the fuel storage and supply system, the main issue is the self-heating propensity of low rank coals leading to spontaneous combustion in yard storage, transport and pulverization. This study evaluated the reactivity of various sub-bituminous and bituminous coals with oxygen at low temperatures by analyzing the temperature increase characteristics of coals under a constant flow rate of oxygen supply. The results were quantified to a self-heating index and the relation with the fuel properties were evaluated.

성역할의 관점에서 조사한 과학자와 자선에 대한 이미지의 격차 및 과학 관련 태도와의 관계생 조사 (The Differences between the Image of Scientists and Self-Image in Terms of Sex-Role and Their Relationships with Science-Related Attitudes)

  • In this study, the image of scientists and the self-image in terms of stereotypical masculine and feminine characteristics were investigated for 562 primary and secondary school students. The perceived differences between the image of scientists and the self-image were quantified and compared across grade levels and gender. Their relationships with science-related attitudes were also studied. The results indicated that students hold more masculine characteristics in the image of scientists and more feminine characteristics in the self-image. The perceived differences between the image of scientists and the self-image were greater for female students than male students. Female students also had more negative attitudes than male students on Career Interest in Science and Enjoyment of Science Lesson of the Test of Science-Related Attitudes. It was found that the differences between the perceived images were negatively correlated with science-related attitudes. Although the relationships were found to be statistically significant, the magnitudes were relatively small. Educational implications are discussed.
