Effects of Hydraulic Variables on the Formation of Freshwater-Saltwater Transition Zones in Aquifers

  • The location and the shape of a freshwater transition zone in a coastal aquifer are affected by many hydraulic variables. To data most works to determine the effects of these variables are limited to qualitative comparison of transiton zones. In this work characteristics of transition zones are analyzed quantitatively. The investigation is limited to a steady-state transition zones. Three dimensionless variables are defined to represent characteristics of steady-state transition zones. They are maximum introsion length, thickness, and degree of stratification. Effects of principal hydraulic variables (velocity and dispersivity) on these characteristics are studied using a numerical model. Dimensional analysis is used to systematically analyze entire model results. Effects of velocity and dispersivity are seem clearly. From this study, increase in velocity is found to cause shrinkage of transition zones. This observation contradicts claims by some that, because dispersion is proportional to velocity, increase in velocity would cause expansion of transition zones.

  • Single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) and positron emission tomography(PET) are modern imaging techniques that allow for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of hemodynamic changes in cerebrovascular diseases. SPECT has been becoming an indispensable method to investigate regional cerebral blood flow because equipment and isotope are easily available in most general hospitals. Acetazolamide stress SPECT has also been proved to be useful to evaluate the cerebrovascular reserve of occlusive cerebrovascular diseases and to select surgical candidate. PET has gained wide spread clinical use in the evaluation of the hemodynamic and metabolic consequences of extracranial or intracranial arterial obstructive disease despite its complexity and limited availability. PET has been established as an invaluable tool in the pathophysilogy investigation of acute ischemic stroke. The potentials, limitations, and clinical applications of SPECT and PET in various cerebrovascular diseases will be discussed in this article with reviews of literatures.

Electrochemical Frequency Modulation: Solution Resistance and Double Layer Capacitance Considerations

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate total current under steady-state conditions for a material undergoing corrosion using the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) technique, taking into account the presence of solution resistance and double layer capacitance. The analysis involving linearization of the Tafel curve allowed for the estimation of corrosion parameters. Results showed that the output signal was dependent on fundamental frequencies and their multiples. In addition, the output signal almost manifested itself at frequencies that were sums of fundamental frequencies of the applied sinusoidal signal. The harmonics calculated showed a significant shift from the principal frequency of input signals. The investigation involved the influence of corrosion current and anode-to-cathode Tafel slope ratio on faradaic and non-faradaic currents (including the average and RMS). The model presented showed both qualitative and quantitative improvements over the previously developed EFM technique that ignored the influence of solution resistance and the double layer capacitance while assuming the applied DC potential corresponded to the corrosion potential of the corroding material.

  • Thermal fusion bonding is a method to enclose open microchannels fabricated on polymer chips for use in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is utilized in various biomedical-microelectromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) applications, such as medical diagnostic kits, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These applications utilize PMMAs biochemical compatibility, optical transparency, and mold characteristics. In this paper, we elucidate both the conformational entanglement of PMMA molecules at the contact interfacial regime, and the qualitative nature of the thermal fusion bonding phenomena through systematic molecular dynamics simulations.

호퍼준설선의 투기특성 (Disposal Characteristics of Dredged Material from the Hopper Dredger)

  • Hydraulic dredgers(Hopper dredger) are the most important piece of equipment in the entire harbor engineering field, and most suitable for the removal of sand and weakly consloidated sediment such as silt. In maintenance dredging, specially confined harbor or congested passage area, Hopper dredger is user most popularly because less obstruction and danger to navigation than other mostly stationary dredgers. Investigation of the physical behave of dredged material disposal in coastal water from the Hopper dredger includes estimations of pattern as well as thickness of material on the bottom. Calculation based on vertical settling and horizontal advection of single particles ignore the effects of bulk properties of the disposed marterial, vertical and horizontal diffusion. and material dilution due to the entrainment of ambient water during descent. This paper focuses on the analysis of dredging and dumping characteristics and the spatial and temporal changes in the dumping fields for the water column and bottom at a hypothetically confined coastal water. This model accounts the behavior of material after release from the hopper dredger. It is shown that the model describes the qualitative feature of prototype dumping process and its response.

  • This research will attempt to reveal that private developers in the Malaysian construction industry have been practicing strategic partnering in their organizations. While the investigation was conducted using quantitative and qualitative approaches, this paper will only reveal results obtained from the questionnaire survey. Results from the questionnaire survey indicate that private developers in the Malaysian construction industry had implemented strategic partnering in their organizations. The elements of the partnering process, which are partnering formation, partnering application and partnering completion or reactivation were tested. The results show that all the elements of the partnering process have been exercised in their projects. Thus it can be surmised that strategic partnering has been practiced by private developers in the Malaysian construction industry.

Estimation and Analysis Methods for Trastuzumab Deamidation Levels Using Mass Spectrometry

  • We aimed to develop a suitable quantification method for detecting asparagine deamidation and aspartic acid isomerization in peptide mapping using LC-MS. Our assessment of its validity and suitability involved comparing its quantitative findings with those obtained from cation-exchange chromatography and capillary electrophoresis methods. By subjecting trastuzumab to rigorous conditions to induce these modifications, we validated the efficacy of this new analytical method in peptide mapping via LC-MS, evaluating both qualitative and quantitative aspects of asparagine deamidation and aspartic acid isomerization. Our investigation underscored the significance of enzyme selection and the presence of miss-cleaved or non-specific peptides in achieving accurate quantitative results. The experimental results demonstrated a strong correlation with results from cation-exchange chromatography and capillary electrophoresis analyses, confirming the reliability of the LC-MS based peptide mapping approach.

Understanding the Breast Cancer Experience: a Qualitative Study of Malaysian Women

  • Breast cancer is the most common and leading cause of cancer mortality among Malaysian women. Despite good survival rates, the diagnosis of cancer still invokes the feeling of stress, fear and uncertainty. Because very little is known about the experiences of Malaysian women with breast cancer, a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to explore the lived experience of newly diagnosed breast cancer. Using a purposive sampling method, 20 Malaysian women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, including Malays (n=10) and Chinese (n=10) were recruited in two main public hospitals in Kelantan. Similarities and divergence in women's experience were identified through thematic analysis of interview transcripts. Three themes emerged from the data: uncertainty experience of the illness, transition process and fatalistic view of breast cancer. In many ways, these findings were parallel with previous studies, suggesting that the experience of breast cancer is to a certain extent similar among women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. This study adds to the sparse literature concerning the experience of illness following breast cancer diagnosis among the Malays and Chinese. More importantly, this study addressed areas that were previously lacking, specifically in depth information on breast cancer experience from a developing country with a multi-ethnic population. The results of this investigation provide preliminary information to healthcare professionals on the impact of illness and cultural influence on survivorship to plan for appropriate education and supportive programme in order to meet the needs of breast cancer women more effectively.

지역사회 공동체 중심으로서의 작은도서관 - 대구 안심지역의 아띠도서관 사례를 중심으로 - (Small Libraries as the Center of Local Community: Focused on the case of Atti Library)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 대구 동구 안심지역의 아띠도서관이 지역사회 공동체의 중심으로서의 역할을 수행해 나갔었던 과정을 탐색해봄으로써 지역사회에서의 작은도서관의 역할과 의미를 새롭게 인식하는데 있다. 연구목적 달성을 위해 아띠도서관 만들기모임 초기 구성원들을 중심으로 심층인터뷰를 진행하였으며 인터뷰자료는 질적분석 방법을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 아띠도서관은 지역사회에서 지역주민들 간의 인적네트워크가 공고해지고 확장되는 토대가 되었으며 지역주민들이 스스로 지역의 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 자신감을 가지게 함으로써 지역의 공동체가 성장하는데 핵심적 역할을 수행하였다. 지역의 작은도서관들은 단지 도서관으로서의 역할을 넘어 지역사회 공동체의 중심으로서의 역할 수행을 포함하여 자신들의 역할을 새롭게 정의할 필요가 있다 하겠다.

공공재로써 공인탐정이 가지는 직업적 가치와 타당성 (Occupational Values and Validity of Certified Investigators as Public Goods)

  • 이 연구는 OECD 국가 중에서 유일하게 없는 공인탐정제도를 도입할 경우에 발생할 수 있다는 직업적 가치와 타당성에 대해서 논의하였다. 연구의 절차와 방법의 다양한 선행연구검토와 사례연구를 통한 질적연구 방식으로 전개되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 얻어진 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 탐정은 공공재로써 다양한 사회적 가치를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 근본적으로 공공서비스의 질적 향상과 더불어 국가재정의 건전성을 확보할 수 있는 정책대안이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 국민들의 국가기관에 대한 신뢰는 더욱 향상될 수 있다. 둘째, 탐정은 이미 다른 국가에서도 합법적으로 인정되는 만큼, 양성화를 통해 신 직업으로써의 사회적 역할을 충분히 수행할 수 있을 것이다. 다음으로 공인탐정제도 분야에 대한 연구가 발전하기 위해서는 양적 데이터에 기반한 연구가 더욱 활발하게 이루어져야 할 것으로 판단된다.
