  • Background: This study aimed to analyze trends in qualitative research within the field of dental hygiene, focusing on papers published in Korean journals from 2000 to 2023. As dental hygienists play a crucial role in preventive oral health, understanding the breadth and depth of qualitative research in this field is essential for advancing practice and education. Methods: This descriptive survey research study analyzed 23 qualitative studies using the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) as a framework. Studies were selected through a comprehensive search of Korean databases. The analysis covered research topics, participant types, methodological approaches, and adherence to COREQ domains, including "Research Team and Reflexivity," "Study Design," and "Analysis and Findings." Results: The analysis revealed that most studies employed a phenomenological methodology (36.4%). Additionally, 87.0% of the studies mentioned Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and only 8.7% utilized qualitative data analysis software. The studies primarily focused on oral care for the elderly, communication, and the experiences of dental hygienists. Furthermore, 95.7% of the studies included participant quotations, but only 56.5% checked data saturation. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for a more diverse methodological approach in dental hygiene research. Journals should also emphasize strict adherence to IRB guidelines and encourage the use of qualitative data analysis software to enhance the rigor of research. By strengthening the systematic foundation of qualitative research in dental hygiene, the field can better address clinical challenges and expand the understanding of dental hygienists' work environments.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the trend of qualitative study published by Korean Journal of Adult Nursing from 1989 to 2011, and to suggest future directions through identifying its strength and weakness. Methods: Ninety one published qualitative studies were analyzed focusing on research methodology and research themes using descriptive statistics. Results: During the last 22 years, the number of qualitative studies has rapidly increased and the methodology used to analyze qualitative data has been diversified. The most frequently used analytic method was a phenomenology (48.4%) and the frequency of conducting a content analysis has increased. The prevailing data collection settings were community (61.5%), followed by hospital (35.2%). Especially, many researches showed specific description on researcher's efforts to get validity and reliability of studies in individual studies presented within recent 10 years. However, it was noted that meta study using mixed methodology and secondary analysis of qualitative studies are rarely used and need to be facilitated. Conclusion: Nursing Researchers utilizing qualitative research should continuously make efforts to increase the validity and reliability of their studies and to find knowledges or strategies applicable to practice through using mixed methods or secondary analysis of individual studies.

  • Purpose: This study analyzes the trends of nursing researches about organ donation and transplantation, and recommends the direction of future nursing studies in Korea. Methods: Ninety-nine researches based upon organ donation and transplantation in Korea were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Among them 58 papers were master's theses and 9 were doctoral dissertations. Articles about organ beneficiaries were seventy. The 47 articles among them were for kidney transplantation. By the types of research design, there were 73 quantitative studies, 19 qualitative studies, and 9 methodological studies. In correlation studies, the quality of life of subjects were evaluated the association with stress, social support, self-efficacy, and compliance. In experimental studies, the independent variables were self efficacy promotion exercise, steroid medication, educational programs regarding an organ transplantation and a brain death, DanJeon breathing exercise, and telephone counseling. The methods of qualitative studies were based on the grounded theory, phenomenology, interpretive phenomenology, and ethnography. The dominant concepts of qualitative researches were experiences of a decision-making of donors and of recipients for organ transplantation. Conclusion: Descriptive surveys or correlation studies were predominant on the nursing research about organ transplantation. Qualitative studies were conducted to some extent. It is recommended to conduct clinically applicable interventional researches with the experimental design.

  • Quantitative and qualitative research explore various social phenomena using different methods. However, there has been a tendency to treat quantitative studies using complicated statistical techniques as more scientific and superior, whereas relatively few qualitative studies have been conducted in the medical and healthcare fields. This review aimed to provide a proper understanding of qualitative research. This review examined the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research to help researchers select the appropriate qualitative research methodology. Qualitative research is applicable in following cases: (1) when an exploratory approach is required on a topic that is not well known, (2) when something cannot be explained fully with quantitative research, (3) when it is necessary to newly present a specific view on a research topic that is difficult to explain with existing views, (4) when it is inappropriate to present the rationale or theoretical proposition for designing hypotheses, as in quantitative research, and (5) when conducting research that requires detailed descriptive writing with literary expressions. Qualitative research is conducted in the following order: (1) selection of a research topic and question, (2) selection of a theoretical framework and methods, (3) literature analysis, (4) selection of the research participants and data collection methods, (5) data analysis and description of findings, and (6) research validation. This review can contribute to the more active use of qualitative research in healthcare, and the findings are expected to instill a proper understanding of qualitative research in researchers who review qualitative research reports and papers.
