  • In this study, the load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial load are investigated based on small scale model tests. In order to analyze the effects of major influencing factors of end bearing capacity, Hoek-cell triaxial tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the initial slope of end bearing load transfer (q-w) curve was highly dependent on rock mass modulus and pile diameter, while the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by rock mass modulus and the spacing of discontinuities. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the Hoek-cell triaxial test results and the field loading tests which were performed on granite and gneiss in South Korea. Through the comparison with pile load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shaft.

  • In designing rock-socketed drilled shaft, bearing capacity evaluation is very important because the maximum values of base and side resistance are not generally mobilized at the same value of displacement, FHWA and AASHTO code suggest different ultimate bearing capacity formular according to rock type and shaft settlement. In domestic code suggest base resistance and side resistance can be added on condition that after confirming the result of field load test with axial load transfer test. This paper shows that static load test and hi-directional load test result analysis of deep rock-socketed drilled shaft in three different sites. Load-settlement curve, t-z, and q-w curve in rock-socketed part were calculated and compared. t-z curve in weathered and soft rock showed no deflection softening behavior in pretty large strain (about 2-3% of diameter). Ultimate resistance could be the summation of side resistance and base resistance in rock-socketed drilled shaft in domestic sites.

  • Testing normality is very important because the most common assumption is normality in statistical analysis. We propose a new plot and test statistic to goodness-of-fit test for normality based on the generalized Lorenz curve. We compare the new plot with the Q-Q plot. We also compare the new test statistic with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS), Cramer-von Mises (CVM), Anderson-Darling (AD), Shapiro-Francia (SF), and Shapiro-Wilks (W) test statistic in terms of the power of the test through by Monte Carlo method. As a result, new plot is clearly classified normality and non-normality than Q-Q plot; in addition, the new test statistic is more powerful than the other test statistics for asymmetrical distribution. We check the proposed test statistic and plot using Hodgkin's disease data.

  • Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of pile should be known accurately. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanism of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For the investigation, five cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the Held test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The f-w (side shear resistance-displacement) curve of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a for millimeter displacements, and after yielding point, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, the f-w curve in the highly/completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and the resistance gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until relatively high displacement (>15 mm). The q-w (end bearing resistance-displacement) curves showed linear response at least until the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless of rock mass conditions.

  • Alteration of illumination with optimum carbon dioxide fixation-based curve in this research successfully enhanced the $CO_{2}-fixation\;(q_CO_{2}$ capability of Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg cultivated in a bubble column photo bioreactor. The level of $CO_{2}$ fixation was up to 1.91 times that observed from cultivation with intensification of illumination on an optimum growth-based curve. During 144 h of cultivation, alteration of light intensity on an optimum $CO_{2}-fixation-based$ curve produced a $q_CO_{2}$ of $12.8\;h^{-1}$. Meanwhile, alteration of light intensity with a growth-based curve only produced a $q_CO_{2}$ of $6.68\;h^{-1}$. Increases in light intensity based on a curve of optimum $CO_{2}-fixation$ produced a final cell concentration of about 5.78 g/L. Both cultivation methods were carried out under ambient pressure at a temperature of $29^{\circ}C$ with a superficial gas velocity of $2.4\;m/h(U_{G}$. Cells were grown on Beneck medium in a 1.0 L Bubble Column Photo bioreactor illuminated by a Phillips Halogen Lamp (20 W/12 V/50 Hz). The inlet gas had a carbon dioxide content of 10%.

  • Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem (ECC) is suitable for resource-constrained devices such as smartcards, and sensor motes because of its short key size. This paper presents an efficient multi-scalar multiplication algorithm which is the main component of the verification procedure in Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). The proposed algorithm can make use of a precomputed table of variable size and provides an optimal efficiency for that precomputed table. Furthermore, the given scalar is receded on-the-fly so that it can be merged with the main multiplication procedure. This can achieve more savings on memory than other receding algorithms. Through experiments, we have found that the optimal sizes of precomputed tables are 7 and 15 when uP+vQ is computed for u, v of 163 bits and 233 bits integers. This is shown by comparing the computation time taken by the proposed algorithm and other existing algorithms.

  • Sperm chromatin integrity is essential for successful fertilization and development of an embryo. Reported here is a quantification of DNA fragments which is intimately associated with reproductive potential to provide one of criteria for sperm chromatin integrity. Three sperm populations were considered: CONTROL (no treatment), UV irradiation (48mW/$cm^2$, 1h) and $H_2O_2$ (oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide, 10 mM, 50 mM and 100 mM). DNA fragments in boar sperm were evaluated by using ligation-mediated quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (LM-qPCR) assay, which relies on real-time qPCR to provide a measure of blunt 5' phosphorylated double strand breaks in genomic DNA. The results in agarose gel electrophoresis showed no significant DNA fragmentation and no dose-dependent response to $H_2O_2$. However, the remarkable difference in shape and position was observed in melting curve of LM-qPCR. This result supported that the melting curve analysis of LM-qPCR presented here, could be more sensitive and accurate than previous DNA fragmentation assay method.

  • Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.

  • The load distribution and deformation of rock socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was laid on quantifying the end bearing load transfer characteristics of rock socketed drilled shafts based on 3D Finite Difference (FD) analysis performed under varying rock strength and rock mass conditions. From the results of FD analysis, it was found that the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by both rock strength and rock mass conditions, while the initial tangent of end bearing load transfer curve ($G_{ini}$) was only dependent on rock strength. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the FD analysis and the field loading tests which were performed on weathered rock in South Korea. Through the comparison with the results of the field loading tests, it is found that the load transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer behavior of drilled shaft.
