  • Vam Cong Cable Stayed Bridge which has 450m main span length is one of the Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity Project and is located in Cuu Long Delta Region. It has steel-concrete composite girder with 4 lane and the type of cable is multi strand cable. The improved H-shape pylon and cast-in-place bored piles were applied. High strength concrete is applied for pylon, precast concrete slab and Cast-in-Situ concrete pile to ensure the structural safety. The present paper describe the design specifications and main features of Vam Cong Cable Stayed Bridge design.

  • A rational method for determination of initial cable forces in cable-stayed bridges without complicated nonlinear analysis is presented. Initial shape analysis for cable-stayed bridges should be able to find optimizated initial cable forces and unstrained length that minimize deflection and vending moments of the deck and pylon. A presented method utilizing the idea of force equilibrium organizes initial shape analysis for each types of cable-stayed bridges. The results of that analysis were compared to several existing methods for 2D numerical examples. And for 3D actual bridges, the improved TCUD method was performed to demonstrate the accuracy of this study.

  • According to the development of loading equipments, it is usual to change or replace the existing stores. It has been known that pylon-mounted under stores strongly affect aircraft dynamics characteristics due to the change of aerodynamics. To predict the aerodynamics and aero-elasticity is essentially requested with considering the configuration and shape of external stores during the development of aircraft and/or external stores. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics and computational structure dynamics interaction methodology are applied for prediction of aerodynamic characteristics for F-5 aircraft's horizontal tail with various shape of external stores. FLUENT and ABAQUS were used to calculate fluid and structural dynamics. Code-bridge was made base on the globally supported radial basis function to execute interpolation and mapping. As a result, even though the aeroelasticity of the horizontal tail slightly changes according to the shape of external store, the flutter was not occurred at the considered flight conditions in this study.

  • The extended tangent stiffness matrices and force-deformation relations of the elastic catenary element were initially derived through the addition of the unstrained length of cables to unknown nodal displacements. A beam-column element was then introduced to model the deck and pylon of cable-stayed bridges. The conventional geometric nonlinear analysis, initial force method, and TCUD method were summarized, with an effective method combining two methods presented to determine the initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges with dead loads. In this combined method, TCUD method was applied to eliminate vertical and horizontal displacements at cable-supported points of decks and on top of pylons, respectively. The initial force method was also adopted to eliminate horizontal and vertical displacements of decks and pylons, Finally, the accuracy and validity of the proposed combined method were demonstrated through numerical examples.

Comparison study of an improved initial force method and TCUD method for determination of initial cable forces in cable-stayed bridges is presented in this paper. For this purpose, an elastic catenary cable element and a nonlinear frame element are firstly described. And concepts and algorithm of two analysis methods are then presented. Finally to demonstrate the validity and the accuracy of two methods, numerical examples for initial state problems of cable-stayed bridges are given and compared based on these methods.

  • During construction of the cable-stayed bridge, not only shape of deck and pylon but also cable forces are main factors for geometry control. Especially, geometry control of deck must be controlled for adjusting design value of vertical and lateral alignment as well as closing of key segment. Also, both the deck level error and cable force error occur necessarily during the construction stage in cable stayed bridge. The errors are caused by different of material properties and computer modeling, and construction mistake, and so on. These causes bring about that the forces of cable and the displacement of deck show different tendency from the theoretical values. Therefore, these errors must necessarily be adjusted and can be improved through adjustment of cable length. In this study, a new optimization tool is proposed to adjust the errors of the second Dolsan cable-stayed bridge.

  • The setting time which is the important element for the determination of slip-up speed of Slip-Form system is the hardening time of early-age concrete when the in place concrete has minimum compressive strength before the concrete appears out of Slip-Form system. But it is very difficult to predict the setting time because it depends on not only the composition ratio of concrete but also various conditions of construction fields. Thus, the technique to estimate accurately and continuously the hardening time of early-age in place concrete during operating Slip-Form system is necessary to guarantee the safety of Slip-Form system and the maintenance of the shape of concrete. Ultrasonic wave-based nondestructive testing methods have the advantages which are accurate and continuous in estimating concrete compressive strength. Of such methods, the method using surface wave which propagates along the surface of material is effective for thick member such as a pylon. Thus, in this paper a study on the determination of slip-up speed for Slip-Form system using surface wave velocity is performed. The relation between the slip-up speed of Slip-Form system and the setting time is formulated, and the surface wave velocity is estimated from continuous wavelet transform of the numerical results for surface wave propagation. Finally, the accuracy of this method according to the distance between the wave source and receivers and the relation between the estimated surface wave velocity and the elastic modulus are investigated.

  • Lattice towers and tubular steel poles have been commonly used for electrical power transmission in Korea. They are durable, structurally stable, simple and can easily be constructed in limited spaces. However, residents are opposed to construct transmission lattice towers in their areas because they are not visually attractive, and electrical field occur at the transmission lines. Underground transmissions have been used instead of the traditional towers to resolve these problems, however they are not cost effective to construct and run. Therefore, we have developed eco-friendly towers that are more attractive, well blending into the surrounding environment, and much more economical than underground transmissions. There are four categories of the eco-friendly electric transmission towers about design aspects. Firstly, there is decoration type such as tree tower and ensemble tower. Tree tower looks like actual trees with leaves and branches so it blends into surroundings. Ensemble towers were designed after pair of crane birds. Those towers have decoration features and art works. Structural examination and manufacturing this type would be very similar to the conventional transmission towers. Secondly, there is arm design type such as traditional tower. Design features are added to the existing towers. As partial design can be adoptable on these types, it can easily meet height regulations and attach to conventional lattice towers and tubular steel poles. Also, these towers are more economical than others. Third category is multipurpose type such as Sail Tower. These towers have simple pole or tubular structure with features which can be used as information message board, public relations and much more. This type will face greater wind pressure because of the area of the board, also visibility must take into consideration. Lastly, there is moulding type such as arc pylon. It is different shape to the conventional towers - lattice towers and tubular steel poles. Dramatic design changes have been adapted - from a hard and static tower to a soft and curved tower. These towers will well stand out in the field. However, structural examination and manufacturing this type would be difficult and costly. Also certain towers of this type would require scaffolding or false work to construct, which will result in limitations of the construction area. This paper shows KEPCO 154 kV Sail tower in detail. KEPCO 154 kV Sail tower that is included in fabrication of sample tower and tower testing has developed and the results are presented in this paper. We hope that sail tower is also considered as a solution to have public acceptance or to create a familiar atmosphere among towers and people in coastal area.
