In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of two non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC152a at various compositions were measured on both 26 fpi low-fin and Turbo-C enhanced tubes, of 19.0 mm outside diameter. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$, with a wall subcooling of 3~8 K. Test results showed that the HTCs of the tested mixtures on the enhanced tubes were much lower than the ideal values calculated by mass fraction weighting of the pure component HTCs. Also, the reduction of HTCs due to the diffusion vapor film was much larger than that of a plain tube. Unlike HTCs of pure fluids, HTCs of the mixtures measured on enhanced tubes increased, as the wall subcooling increased, which was due to the sudden break-up of the vapor diffusion film with an increase in wall subcooling. Finally, the heat transfer enhancement ratios for mixtures were found to be much lower, than those of pure fluids.
Performance of various temperature-dependent vapor-pressure equations with two adjustable parameters is assessed. These are Antoine, Miller, Zia-Thodos, Mejbri-Bellagi and other 10 equations. The equations are fitted to correlate the data from NIST Chemistry WebBook for 43 pure substance refrigerants from the critical point to the triple point. It was found that the Mejbri-Bellagi equation yields the lowest average absolute deviation of 0.37% compared with that of 0.58% of the Miller equation which is known to give better fit to experimental data than the Antoine equation(1.42%) does.
An experimental study was carried out in a uniformly heated horizontal tube to examine heat transfer characteristics of pure refrigerants, R134a and R123, and their mixtures during flow boiling. The flow pattern was also observed through tubular sight glasses with an internal diameter of 10 mm located at the inlet and outlet of the test section. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa and in the heat flux ranges of 5~100 kW/$m^2$, vapor Quality 0~100 percent and mass velocity of 150-600 kg/$m^2$s. The observed flow patterns were compared to the flow pattern map of Kattan et al., which predicted well the present data over the entire range of mass velocity employed in this study. Heat transfer coefficients of the mixture were less than the interpolated values between pure fluids both in the low quality region where the nucleate boiling is dominant and in the high quality region where the convective evaporation is dominant.
Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R407C, and R410A were measured for a horizontal plain tube. The test section was made of a copper tube of 8.8mm inner diameter and 1000mm length respectively. The refrigerant was heated by passing hot water through an annulus surrounding the test section. All tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100~300 kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s. HTCs were measured by two methods: the direct wall temperature measurement method and the indirect Wilson plot method. Experimental results showed that the Wilson plot method was affected greatly by the external test conditions and yielded inconsistent results. For the mass flux of 100kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs were almost constant regardless of the quality for a given refrigerant HTCs of R134a and R407C were similar to those of R22 while those of R410A were 60% higher than those of R22. For the mass fluxes of 200 and 300kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs of R407C were almost the same as those of R22, while HTCs of R134a and R410A were 12-13% and 20~23% higher than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerant, Shah\`s correlation yielded a good agreement with the measured data both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Condensing heat transfer characteristics of hydrocarbon refrigerants are experimentally investigated. Single component hydrocarbon refrigerants (propane, isobutane, butane and propylene) and binary mixtures of propane/isobutane and propane/butane are considered as test fluids. Local condensing heat transfer coefficients of selected refrigerants are obtained from overall conductance measurement. Average heat transfer coefficients at different mass fluxes and heat transfer rates are shown and compared with those of R22. Pure hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher values of heat transfer coefficient than R22. It is also found that there is a heat transfer degradation for hydrocarbon mixtures due to composition variation during condensation. Measured condensing heat transfer coefficients are compared with predicted values by available correlations. An empirical correlation for pure and mixed hydrocarbon is developed, and it shows good agreement with experimental data.
An experiment study on pressure drop was carried out for both an adiabatic and a diabatic two-phase flow with pure refrigerants R134a and Rl23 and their mixtures as test fluids in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. The frictional pressure drop during flow boiling is predicted by using two models; the homogeneous model that assumes equal phase velocity and the separate flow model that allows a slip velocity between two phases. The measured frictional pressure drop was compared to a few available correlations. Homogeneous model considerally underpredicted the present data for mixture as well as pure component in the entire mass velocity ranges employed in the present study, while Friedel correlation was found to satisfactorily correlate the frictional pressure drop data as compared to other correlation.
A few correlation equations of the saturated liquid density are reviewed and a new equation is proposed. Performance of each equation is examined using the data listed in the ASHRAE table for 22 pure substance refrigerants. The new four-parameter equation yields an average absolute deviation of 0.03% for 22 refrigerants. Performance of the new four-parameter equation is found to be equivalent to those of the existing equations such as Hou-Martin equation(0.03%) and Iglesias-Silva-Hall equation(0.08%).
Published correlation equations of the enthalpy of vaporization are reviewed and a new four-parameter correlation equation is proposed. Performance of the proposed equation is examined using the ASHRAE data for 22 pure substance refrigerants as reference data. The new equation yields an average absolute deviation of $0.05\%$, which is smaller than those of published equations, such as equations of Guermouche-Vergnaund $(0.08\%)$, Aerebrot $(0.13\%)$, Radoz-Lydersen $(0.08\%)$, and Somayajulu $(0.08\%)$. The three adjustable parameters of the modified correlation are optimized and reported for 22 substances. The equation proposed in this work is valid over the entire temperature range where data points exist.
Miniature J-T cryocooler using nitrogen or argon has been widely adopted in cooling infrared sensor for space/military application and cryosurgery. Argon or nitrogen, however, has relatively low specific cooling power compared to nitrous oxide, but the ultimate operating temperature is much lower than nitrous oxide. On the other hand, nitrous oxide has large specific cooling power, but the operating temperature is limited to its boiling point (>183K). To compromise the different characteristics of these gases, the performance of miniature J-T cryocooler using argon and nitrous oxide mixture is investigated in this paper. Three different compositions of mixture (25/75, 50/50, and 75/25 molar fraction) are blended and tested. The results are compared with the experiments of pure argon and pure nitrous oxide. The experimental results show some encouraging potentiality of mixed refrigerant J-T cryocooler. The critical clogging problem, however, was observed with argon and nitrous oxide mixture, and the lowest achievable temperature with this mixture was limited to the freezing point of nitrous oxide. The paper discusses detailed clogging process of the mixture and suggests an alternative.
Boiling heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops for R-22 and R-407C were measured in horizontal micro-channels. The test section is stainless steel tube, inner tube diameters are 1.8mm and 2.8mm, and the respective lengths are 1500mm and 3000mm. The range of mass flux is 300-600kg/$m^2$s and heat flux is 5-15kW/$m^2$. In this results, pressure drop increased linearly for both R-22 and R-407C with increased mass flux, but the increase of heat flux did not affect the pressure. In addition, the pressure drop was fairly increased in the high quality region rather than low quality region. In the range of low quality, the mass flux had a small affect on the heat transfer coefficients, however, in high quality region, the heat transfer coefficients increased even more with increasing mass flux. Under the low quality region and low mass flux, the heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing heat flux densities. The effects of inner tube diameter were clearly observed. Namely, the measured pressure drop inside inner tube diameter 1.8 mm is higher than 2.8 mm with increasing the mass flux and heat flux. Also, the measured local heat transfer coefficient inside inner tube diameter 1.8 mm is higher than 2.8 mm in the range of high qualities. The experimental data for R-407C compared with proposed correlation using pure refrigerant. The experimental data for R-407C was more decreased than the proposed correlation for pure refrigerant up to 50% or more.
