  • In view of the mounting cost of rehabilitating deteriorating infrastructure, further compounded by intensified environmental concerns, it is now obvious that the evolvement and application of advanced composite structural materials to complement conventional construction materials is a necessity for sustainable construction. This study seeks alternative fill materials (polymer-based) to the much-limited cement concrete used in concrete-filled steel tubular structures. Polymers have been successfully used in other industries and are known to be much lighter, possess high tensile strength, durable and resistant to aggressive environments. Findings of this study relating to elasto-plastic characteristics of polymer concrete filled steel composite beams subjected to uniform bending highlight the enormous increase in stiffness, strength and ductility of the composite beams, over the empty steel tube. Moreover, polymer based materials were noted to present a wide array of properties that could be tailored to meet specific design requirements e.g., ductility based design or strength based design. Analytical formulations for design are also considered.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flexural behavior of square hollow steel section (HSS) beams subjected to pure bending. Totally six unfilled and nine ultra high performance concrete (UHPC)-filled HSS beams were tested under four-point bending until failure. The effects of the steel tube thickness, the yield strength of the steel tube and the strength of concrete on moment capacity, curvature, and ductility of UHPC-filled HSS beams were examined. The performance indices named relative ductility index (RDI) and strength increasing factor (SIF) were investigated with regard to different height-to-thickness ratio of the specimens. The flexural strengths obtained from the tests were compared with the values predicted by Eurocode 4, AISC-LRFD and CIDECT design codes. The results showed that the increase in the moment capacity and the corresponding curvature is much greater for thinner HSS beams than thicker ones. Eurocode 4 and AISC-LRFD predict the ultimate moment capacity of the all UHPC-filled HSS beams conservatively.

  • This study is concerned with the application of new criterion for membrane/shell mixed element in the rigid-plastic finite element analysis and elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The membrane/shell mixed element can be selctively adapted to the pure stretching condition by using membrane or a shell element in the bending effect areas. Thus, membrane/shell mixed element requires a efficient criterion for a distinction between membrane and shell element. In the present study introduce the criterion using the angle of between two element and confirm a generality of criterion from appling the theory to a rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic problems.

  • The influence of hygrothermal effects on the vibration frequency and buckling load of a shear deformable composite plate with arbitrary initial stresses was investigated. The governing equations of the effects of humid, thermal and initial stresses are established using the variational method. The material properties of the composite plate are affected by both temperature and moisture. The initial stress is taken to be a combination of uniaxial load and pure bending in a hygrothermal environment. The influence of various parameters, such as the fiber volume fraction, temperature, moisture concentration, length/thickness ratios, initial stresses and bending stress ratio on the vibration and stability of the response of a laminated plate are studied in detail. The behavior of vibration and stability are sensitive to temperature, moisture concentration, fiber volume fraction and initial stresses.

  • A semi-monocoque truncated cone structure, which is a main structure for the payload adapter of KSLV-I, was designed. Static test was performed to confirm the reliability of the cone structure under the design loads. Strains and displacements are measured during four load cases; the compressive axial, pure bending, pure shear, and combined loading conditions. The results showed that the cone structure satisfies the design requirements. An equivalent axial load was applied to the cone structure so that the global buckling of the cone structure occurred. The measured buckling load was compared with the predicted one by finite element method. The results show a good agreement.

  • The ion-exchange membrane, Nafion, remains as the benchmark for a majority of research and development in IPMC technology. In this research, we employed a novel ionomer named by sulfonated poly(styrene-ran-ethylene) (SPSE) that is crosslinked by UV irradiation. The sulfonic acid groups were stable during the UV irradiation crosslinking process. Water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity are characterized for both pure SPSE and crosslinked SPSE membrane. The bending responses of SPSE actuators under both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) excitations were investigated. The voltage-current behaviors of the actuators under AC excitations are also measured. Results showed the crosslinked SPSE actuators have better electromechanical performance than that of pure SPSE actuator with regard to tip displacement as a novel smart material.

  • The iron-zinc interfacial reaction and corrosin properties in galvanizing bath containning Ni have been intestigated. The substrate steel plates were galvanized in Zn or Zn-0.018Al baths with various Ni contents. The corrosion resistance of galvanized specimens was also evaluated by $60^{\circ}$bending test for galvannealing speaaimens. The corrosion resistance was improved with Ni addition in pure Zn bath, while deteriorated with Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath. The anti-powdering property, on thhe otherhand, was improved with Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath, while deteriorated with Ni addition in pure Zn. It was found that the anti-powdering property was improved with increasing $\xi$ phase ratio in reaction layer.

  • Ti-6Al-4V has been used widely in biomedical field. But because of its toxicity, the ${\beta}$ stabilizing element, V, in Ti-6Al-4V has been replaced by Nb, Ta. Ti-10Ta-10Nb has been developed for biomedical applications. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of Ti-alloy(Ti-10Ta-10Nb) was investigated, in comparison with that of pure Ti. In order to better understand the fundamental fatigue behavior of Ti-10Ta-10Nb, rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out. Ti-10Ta-10Nb has a better fatigue strength than pure Ti. In this paper, fatigue life has been predicted with Nisitani's equation of the fatigue crack propagation that can be established by measuring fatigue crack growth rates.

  • By means of the two-dimensional basic equations of transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic media and the strict differential operator theorem, the general solution in the case of distinct eigenvalues is derived, in which all mechanical, electric and magnetic quantities are expressed in four harmonic displacement functions. Based on this general solution in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including magneto-electro-elastic rectangular beam under uniform tension, electric displacement and magnetic induction, pure shearing and pure bending, cantilever beam with point force, point charge or point current at free end, and cantilever beam subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained.

  • This paper investigates the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) circular columns under combined loading including torsion. The main variables considered in this study are the ratio of torsional moment to bending moment (T/M) and the level of detailing for moderate and high seismicity (low and high transverse reinforcement/spiral ratio). This paper presents the results of tests on seven columns subjected to cyclic bending and shear, cyclic torsion, and various levels of combined cyclic bending, shear, and torsion. Columns under combined loading were tested at T/M ratios of 0.2 and 0.4. These columns were reinforced with two spiral reinforcement ratios of 0.73% and 1.32%. Similarly, the columns subjected to pure torsion were tested with two spiral reinforcement ratios of 0.73% and 1.32%. This study examined the significance of proper detailing, and spiral reinforcement ratio and its effect on the torsional resistance under combined loading. The test results demonstrate that both the flexural and torsional capacities are decreased due to the effect of combined loading. Furthermore, they show a significant change in the failure mode and deformation characteristics depending on the spiral reinforcement ratio. The increase in spiral reinforcement ratio also led to significant improvement in strength and ductility.
