  • Bottled water companies in Korea are required to conduct an environmental impact assessment of their drinking water supply at least six months before the expiration of their five-year marketing and production license. The water level drawdown, production well water quality, and monitoring well observation results are the most important items that are evaluated in the assessment report. Here we evaluate the relationship between well drawdown and pumping capacity with pumping time from the production wells of bottled water manufacturers located in Cretaceous granite (site A) and Precambrian gneiss (site B). The method to reduce the pumping capacity is more effective in decreasing the drawdown than the method to simultaneously control the pumping and recovery times. Furthermore, the monitoring data from the pH monitoring sensors that were installed in Precambrian gneiss (site C) yield pH values that increase with time and eventually plateau at a certain value. We therefore propose that pH monitoring is either discontinued or improved to provide more reliable and usable results.

  • In this study, pumping capacity in the area of natural river estuary is estimated by the quantitative analysis using finite element method. The study area is Iga-ri pumping station in the estuary of Seojung-chun which runs to the East coast. First of aH, hydraulic properties and effects of different seawater levels are analyzed in this area. Variations of groundwater level caused by pumping and properties of seawater intrusion are analyzed, then compared the case of reinforcing the existing intake weir with the case of setting up an weir at the upper stream. The observed data of groundwater drawdown caused by pumping during drought period and seawater intrusion are compared with results of the analysis done by groundwater model using finite element method, and it is found that both are similar. Accordingly, groundwater model used in this study reflects well the variation of groundwater level caused by pumping.

  • This study analyzed on characteristics of the ground-water capture zone in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area according to pumping rate. For this study, it targeted Jejudo island where is the volcanic island. To analyze, MODFLOW model and MODPATH model, which are the ground-water flow analysis models, were used. As a result of research, the following conclusions could be obtained. As a result of analyzing influence of a change in pumping time upon length of capture zone, the length of capture zone in coastal area was indicated to be greater in the changing ratio compared to the length of capture zone in mid-mountainous area. Next, in the coastal area, the pumping rate and the capture-zone length are changing similarly. However, in mid-mountainous area, the length of capture zone was indicated to grow when the pumping rate comes to exceed 1,500m3/day. As a result of analyzing influence of a change in pumping time upon capture area, the tendency of a change in the area was indicated similarly in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area. Especially, it could be known that the larger pumping rate leads to the more definite increase in tendency to a change in capture area. Based on this study, it was allowed to be possibly used in the suitable pumping rate in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area of the volcano island in the future. A follow-up research is judged to necessarily analyze the influence of tubular-well group upon capture zone by additionally analyzing a change in capture zone targeting the concentrated tubular well.

  • Drilling at unconsolidated layer can make the aquifer disturbed and reduce a productivity of groundwater well. Surge block and air surging were applied to a pumping well located in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyung-gun, to improve a well efficiency by removing clogging and fine-grained slime. Two experimental log-linear equations, $y_1=-0.1769\;ln(x_1)+0.4960$ and $y_2=-84.3358\;ln(x_2)+512.8162$, were proposed in this site, in which $x_1$ and $x_2$ are the number of surging event, $y_1$ is the amount of slime, and $y_2$ is a recovery time of groundwater level after air surging. Well loss exponent (P) decreased after surging, from 3.422 to 1.439, and the groundwater inflow from aquifer happened in all directions around a well with gradually increasing the homogeneity in a local aquifer's hydraulic property. It was revealed that long-term well development should be done in the pumping well which is located in unconsolidated sediments to increase a well productivity.

  • Convergent flow tracer test for 2 m (IW-1 well) and 5 m (IW-2 well) of test scale was conducted at the alluvial aquifer with high permeability and storativity. Pumping rate for convergent flow tracer test were $2,500m^3/day$, and the chloride tracer of 5 kg was instantaneously injected into IW-1 and IW-2 wells. Differences of first arrival time and peak concentration were analyzed by using the concentration breakthrough curves of chloride. Recovered chloride mass were analyzed by recovered cumulative mass curves. And, increment and decrement for chloride concentration were analyzed through chloride concentration versus recovered cumulative mass ratio graphs. Also, increment and decrement ratios of chloride concentration were estimated through linear regression analyses for increment and decrement intervals of chloride concentration. Longitudinal dispersivities were estimated by quot;Converging Radial Flow With Instantaneous Injectionquot; method using CATTI code. Longitudinal dispersivities estimated by CATTI code were 0.4152 m between pumping well and IW-1 well, and 3.2665 m between pumping well and IW-2 well. Longitudinal dispersivity was increased according to far distance from the pumping well. The longitudinal dispersivity according to distance were estimated as 0.21 between pumping well and IW-1 well, and 0.65 between pumping well and IW-2 well.

  • The objective of this study is to spatially assess the streamflow depletion due to groundwater pumping near the main stream of Juksanchoen watershed. The surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW, in this study, was used to simulate streamflow responses to each groundwater pumping from wells located within 500m from the stream. The simulated results showed that the streamflow depletion rate divided by the pumping rate for each well location ranges from 20% to 96%. In particular, the streamflow depletion exceeds 60% of pumping rate if the distance between stream and well is lower than 100 m, hydraulic diffusivity is higher than $500m^2/d$, and streambed hydraulic conductance is above 25m/d. The simulated results were also presented in the form of spatial distribution maps that indicate the fraction of the well pumping rate in order to show the effect of a single well more comprehensively and easily. From the developed areal distribution of stream depletion, higher and more rapid responses to pumping occur near middle-downstream reach, and the spatially averaged percent depletion is about 66.7% for five years of pumping. The streamflow depletion map can provide objective information for the near-stream groundwater permission and management.

  • This study deals with linear flow pattern in steady-state or transient dual-porosity media with a vertical geologic structure such as fault, fracture zone, etc. A pumping well is located in the vertical structure of infinitesimal or finite width with high hydraulic conductivity and negligible specific storage. Selected type curves on a pumping well and observation wells in the fractured system and the matrix block are provided. The type curves on the pumping well considers both wellhole and well-loss effects.

  • In-situ test to find the change of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ concentrations and ion contents in groundwater was conducted during two pumping tests at the riverbank filtration site, where is the riverine area of the Nakdong River in Changnyeong-Gun. Groundwater was sampled at one pumping well and 10 monitoring wells during a 5 steps drawdown pumping test with the rates from $500m^3/day$ to $900m^3/day$ and a constant pumping test with $800m^3/day$. The change in ion concentration of groundwater was more remarkable during a step drawdown pumping test than a constant pumping test. Especially, the decrease in $Fe^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ concentrations was distinct in a step drawdown pumping test and it happens predominantly along the direction that the radius of pumping influence was small due to a good aquifer connectivity to a pumping position. The precipitation and the oxidation of iron and manganese were caused by an air inflow and a disturbance in groundwater flow due to an abrupt change in pumping rate. The pumping rate and spatial distribution of an aquifer around a pumping well need to be considered as an important factor for the development of in-situ iron and manganese treatment technology.
