  • The propellants are burned in the pre-burner of the staged combustion cycle engine, and the resulting hot gas drives the turbine, and the turbine operates the turbo pump. The burned gas passing through the turbo pump is supplied to the combustor at high temperature and high pressure, where the gas is supplied in an excess of fuel or an excess of oxidant depending on the amount of fuel or oxidant. When the cycle works at oxidizer-rich staged combustion, its metal pipe can ignite or explode by the impact of even small particles. In this study, we develop the powder combinations for anti-oxidation coating through the analysis of other coating materials and establish the coating process.

  • Critical speed of high thrust liquid rocket engine turbopump is obtained through a rotordynamic analysis and a unloaded turbopump test is peformed for validation of the numerical model. The first critical speed predicted by the numerical analysis is correlated well with the test result for the bearing unloaded rotor condition only considering mass unbalance load. Using the previous rotordynamic model, critical speed variation is estimated as a function of varied bearing stiffness due to pump and turbine radial loads with relative angle difference. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the relative angle difference of pump and turbine radial loads greatly affects the critical speed. However, additional axial load reduces the effect derived from the relative angle difference of radial loads.

  • In a supersonic turbine, A rotor overlap technique reduced the chance of chocking in the rotor passage, and made the design pressure ratio satisfied. However, the technique also made additional losses, like a pumping loss, expansion loss, etc. Therefore, an approximate optimization technique was appled to find the optimal shape of overlap which maximizes the improvement of the turbine performance. The design variables were shape factors of a rotor overlap. An optimal design for rotor overlap reduces leakage mass flow rate at tip clearance by about 50% and increases about 4% of total-static efficiency compared with the base model. It was found that the most effective design variable is the tip overlap and that the hub overlap size is the lowest.

  • Korea Aeronautics Research Institute (KARI) is developing a turbo pump that has 1-stage impulse turbine and relatively high tip clearance for safety. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of reaction on tip clearance loss in axial turbines. Both cascades were tested in a subsonic wind tunnel. In each cascade, total pressure was measured for tip clearance ranging from 1% to 20% of chord. In results, increasing tip clearance, total pressure loss in reaction turbines is continually increased but impulse turbines keep almost same level of mass averaged total pressure loss. When tip clearance becomes more than 10% of chord, mass-averaged total pressure loss in impulse turbines is less than in reaction. This means that when tip clearance is more than 10% of chord, impulse turbines have better efficiency than reaction turbines.

  • The power plant is a major infrastructure composed of essential machinery such as Turbine Generators (TG), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), etc. Particularly, Combined Heat & Power Plants (CHP) are highly efficient power plants that simultaneously produce heat and electricity. Recently, cases have emerged where railway tunnels are being constructed beneath such power plants due to the underground development of urban rail transportation. Therefore, there is a pressing need to assess the impact of vibrations induced by blasting excavation during the construction of railway tunnels beneath the power plant, as well as the vibrations during railway operation, on the major machinery foundations and structures within the power plant. In this study, criteria for evaluating the vibration impact on key vibration-sensitive structures are summarized, and evaluation standards based on international criteria are established. Based on this, the study examines the vibration impact during the blasting excavation method of NATM tunnels beneath the operational power plant. Furthermore, subsequent railway operation, specifically focusing on the impact of train vibrations on Turbine foundations, Pump foundations, and District Heating pipelines using 3D dynamic numerical analysis. The results indicate that vibration values corresponding to up to 97.3% of the evaluation criteria are derived based on the numerical analysis. However, considering the significance of power plant-related structures, additional measures to reduce vibrations are proposed, including further test blasting, alteration of blasting patterns, reducing the charge per delay, or decreasing advance.

  • LRE(liquid rocket engine) performance design code with several modules for each engine component has been developed for a preliminary design purpose. Thrust chamber, non-cryogenic centrifugal pump, single stage axial impulse turbine, gas generator and exhaust pipe for extra thrust have been considered. For simplicity, pump exit pressures are fixed, which eliminates pressure balancing problem between thrust chamber and turbopump unit. In this paper, calculated performance parameters with system flow charts and the design methodologies for each component are briefly presented and the results are compared with tile real engine specification.

  • The mechanical face seal has been tested in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARl) for turbopump applications. In the turbopump under current development, the mechanical face seal is installed between fuel pump and turbine to prevent a mixture of fuel and combustion gas. Generally the mechanical face seal in turbopump is exposed to severe environment because of great rotational speed, high temperature of combustion gas and high level of pressure difference. Thus a series of tests were performed to guarantee the reliability of mechanical face seal by means of simulating the practical operating conditions. The tests were conducted up to 20,000 rpm with pressure difference of 800 kPa and temperature of 620 K In addition several carbon materials for mechanical face seal were conducted to the tests to compare the life time. During the tests, the performance against leakage was monitored and the carbon wear was also measured to estimate the life of a mechanical face seal The results show that the leakage flow rates of mechanical face seal is ignorable compared to an overall flow rate of fuel pump. The carbon material which has the finest wear resistance was found during the tests. Lastly no critical failure of mechanical face seal was found during the tests and the reliability of mechanical face seal for turbopump was successfully proved.

  • Turbomolecular pump (TMP) is widely used to obtain and maintain high vacuum by spinning turbine rotors to migrate gas molecules to the exhaust of the pump. However, performance of the TMP has not been well observed when it is influenced by strong magnetic field. Such study may give useful information about magnetic field tolerance of TMP, development of magnetic shielding technique for key components of TMP, etc. For this purpose, magnetic field induced by a circular current source was firstly designed and investigated. Using spherical coordinates and vector potential, magnetic field throughout the space including axis of rotation was calculated. Due to the rotational symmetry of the circular current source, induced magnetic field is azimuthally symmetric and, thus, is analyzed by radial and polar components of the magnetic fields. In order to enhance the numerical accuracy for the calculation, magnetic field was expressed by complete elliptic integrals of first and second kinds. According to the calculation, when 1 A of DC-current passes through a 1 turned circular wire with 50 cm of diameter, overall magnitude of the inducedmagnetic field was about 0.02 Gauss, which was used to the determination of the current and the number of turns of wires to fabricate the coil for the study on the magnetic field tolerance of TMP.

  • The temperature of vertical pump bearing metal in the pumped storage power plant has been high enough to shutdown the unit. Attempts such as decreasing the oil supply temperature, increasing the bearing oil gap etc. were performed to resolve the problem, but the issue was not resolved. Finally, the high bearing metal temperature was corrected by adjusting the bearing preload. The preload is formed by the oil wedge between the journal surface and bearing pad surface and the degree of preload is determined by the machined radial clearance, assembled radial clearance, rotor journal diameter etc. This paper focuses on the analysis of the preload depending on the bearing parameters and the result of the modification of the bearing following the analysis. The bearing metal temperature dropped as much as $20^{\circ}C$ which was similar as expected by software calculation. But the shaft vibration could increase when the assembled radial clearance is excessive. So, the adjustment of the bearing preload for the tilting pad type journal bearing should be carefully performed.

  • This study is mainly focused on the assessment of return, semi return, and returnless fuel supply system for an LPi engine. In order to compare the return type with returnless one with various LPG blends, combustion analysis and cyclic THC emission characteristic were tested at the part load operating condition of the LPi engine. Considering heat balance of each fuel supply systems, pressure and temperature increment of return type showed lower at the fuel rail during idle warm up operation. However, those of returnless type at LPG tank maintained stable and slow increment because the heat transfer from the LPi engine was minimized. Finally, hot restartability of each fuel supply systems were evaluated with the various LPG blends and fuel temperatures. As a result, semi return type has equivalent performance to return type considering combustion and emission characteristic, hot restartability performance for LPi engine.
