  • In this paper we proposed system parameter values of M-ary PPM/TH(Pulse Position Modulation/Time Hopping) ultra-wideband systems having data rate of 100 Mbps for the frequency band, which is allocated by Federal Communications Commission(FCC). We also analyzed performance of the proposed system in the AWGN channels. According to the results of performance analysis, It is observed that available pulse duration is very limitative for this system. In case of constant data rate, if M and the pulse repetition numbers are increased, then the system performance is improved and the user number is decreased.

  • Many of modem radars use modulated pulse repetition intervals for the purpose of anti-aliasing and ECCM. The interception, analysis and identification of radar signals is a major function of a radar intercept receiver. In this paper, we discuss the identification of pulse repetition intervals modulation of radar signals which is one of the major parameters for the analysis of radar. We proposed a new algorithm based on Markov models approach. This approach is shown to be reliable and robust to the missing pulses, as well as to require only relatively few pulse data.

  • A numerical model for the analysis and design of orifice pulse tube refrigerators has been developed. Heat transfer coefficient and friction factors in the model vary with time, and the real physical properties such as thermal conductivity and viscosity were used to improve the accuracy of the model. Thermodynamic behavior of the working fluid within pulse tube refrigerators was investigated and the effect of design parameters, such as reservoir volume, orifice diameter, and NTU of regenerator, on the cooling load and COP was shown.

  • A new approach on identifying a first-order plus time-delay (FOPTD) model using finite--duration pulse inputs has been presented recently [1]. The identification methods are very simple because it is enough to observe only two extremes and the time when they occur in the transient response to pulse input. However, when there is mismatch between actual system and FOPTD model. how sensitive the methods are has not been studied. In this paper, we investigate robustness issue of those identification algorithms in the presence of the model structure mismatch and uncertainties. Through an example we will demonstrate it.

  • Cooling with easy, reliable cryocooler is highly desirable for the commercial and military application The pulse tube refrigerator has no moving parts at the cold end, so that the mechanical vibration and magnetic noise can be reduced to the low level with higher relaibility and longer lifetime than the Stilting cryocooler. The inertance tube improve the performance of pulse tube refrigerator by providing optimal phase shift between pressure and amss flow rate, and it is easiest to implement at large cooling capacity and high operating frequency. In this study, the performance of the inertance pulse tube refrigerator was investigated by analysis. The results show the influence of the diameter and length of the inertance tube on the performance of the refrigerator.

  • In this paper, analytical methods for calculating the average probability of bit error of direct sequence pulse amplitude modulation ultra wideband (DS-PAM UWB) system and time hopping pulse position modulation ultra wideband (TH-PPM UWB) system are given. For the multi-user DS-PAM UWB system, the bipolar pulse amplitude modulation is used in order to achieve better performance. As we know, more attention is paid to the TH-PPM UWB systems recently. In this paper. we first introduce the accurate BER calculation methods of the multi-user DS-PAM UWB and TH-PPM UWB systems and then give the performance analysis over the ideal AWGN channel and a correlation receiver. Furthermore, we also introduce their applications in image transmission and data transmission and give the simulation results. The analytical method yields simple and exact formulas relating the performance to the system parameters.

  • Filamentous cyanobacteria are an ecologically important group of bacteria because they are able to provide both organic carbon fixed nitrogen that can support the nutritional requirements for other microorganisms. Because of their prokaryotic nature, they can also be used as potentially powerful model systems for the analysis of oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation. Gene transfer is an indispensable procedure for genetic analysis of filamentous cyanobacteria. Electroporation was used to introduce foreign DNA into cyanobacterial cells. In experiments designed to optimize the electroporation technique, the effects of the field strength (amplitude of pulse) and time constant (duration of pulse), DNA concentration and host restriction/modification of DNA on the efficiency of electro-transformation were investigated. The results of this research revelaed that a high voltage pulse of short duration was effective for the electro-transformation of Anabaene sp. M131. The maximal number of transformants was obtained at 6 kV/cm with a pulse duration of 5 msec. The efficiency of electro-transformation was also sensitive to concenetration of DNA; even small amounts of DNA (0.01 .mu.g/ml) were able to gie a large number of transformants (1.0 * 10$\^$3/ cfu/ml).

  • This paper presents a neutron detector configuration using EJ-301 scintillation liquid, a R9420 photo-multiplier and a homemade preamplifier. The detector qualities which include the energy linearity, efficiency response and neutron/gamma discrimination are guaranteed for neutron detection in the energy range from 0 to 3000 keVee. Regarding the neutron/gamma discrimination capability, four pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods which are the threshold crossing time (TCT), pulse gradient analysis (PGA), charge comparison (CC) and correlation pattern recognition (CPR), were evaluated and discussed; among of these, the CPR method provides the best neutron/gamma discrimination.

  • This paper describes the measurement of pulse positioning (input time) to calculate a time of arrival (TOA) that takes from transmitting a signal from the target of multilateration (MLAT) system to receiving the signal at the receiver. In this regard, this paper analyzes performances of simple threshold method and level adjust system (LAS) method, which is one of the adaptive threshold detector (ATD) methods, among many methods to calculate pulse positioning of signal received at the receiver. To this end, Cramer-rao lower bound (CRLB) with regard to pulse positioning, which was measured when signals transmitted from a transponder mounted at the target were received at the receiver, was induced and then deviation sizes with regard to pulse positioning, which was measured with simple threshold and LAS methods through MATLAB simulations, were compared. Next, problems occurring according to a difference in amplitude of signals inputted to each receiver are described when pulse positioning is measured at multiple receivers located at a different distance from the target as is the case in the MLAT system. Furthermore, LAS method to resolve the problems is explained. Lastly, this study analyzes whether a pulse positioning error occurring due to the signal noise satisfies the requirement (6 nsec. or lower) recommended for the MLAT system when using these two methods.

  • When an optical pulse propagates through the atmospheric channel, the atmospheric turbulence attenuates and spreads this pulse. This attenuation and broadening of pulse are occurred by the fluctuation in the arrival time of pulse at the optical receiver. This pulse broadening induces the intersymbol interference (ISI) between the adjacent pulses. finally, the adjacent pulses are overlapped and the bit rate and the repeaterless transmission length are limited by the ISI. In digital communication system, therefore, the pulse broadening is more important factor than the attenuation. In this paper, thus, we find the ISI in the atmospheric turbulence as the function of the structure constant for the refractive index fluctuation that presents the strength of turbulence using the temporal momentum function and present it by numerical analysis.
