  • We present a multi-tap microwave photonic filter with high selectivity through applying time-to-frequency mapping and optical frequency comb shaping techniques. When arranged in the time-to-frequency mapping stage, by a Fourier transform, the deviation of the optical taps to the target profile is significantly reduced while maintaining the apodization profile, resulting in high sidelobe suppression in the filters. By applying a simple time-to-frequency mapping stage to the conventional optical frequency combs, we demonstrate a substantially enhanced (>10dB) sidelobe suppression, resulting in filter lineshapes exhibiting a significantly high (>40dB) main lobe to sidelobe suppression ratio. These results highlight the potential of the technique for implementation in various passband filters with high sidelobe suppression.

  • In this paper, I introduce a simple design method using existing filter design method, such as Parks-McClecllan algorithm, for root-squared type raised cosine filter with equiripple characteristics, Thought some design examples, we show that the proposed filter has much better performance in ripple than the conventional SRCF at the expense of small increasing of ISI. In addition, the proposed filter is compatible with conventional SRCF. Finally, the filter for W-CDMA which uses RRC (Root Raised Cosine) with a=0.22 is designed in 12bit finite precision.

  • This paper presents the design and analysis of a new input AC current wave shaping AC-DC converter for cost effective harmonic mitigation under varying loads. The proposed converter consists of a delta-polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse AC-DC converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned at $11^{th}$ harmonic frequency. The proposed AC-DC converter eliminates the most dominant $5^{th},\;7^{th}$ and $11^{th}$ harmonics and reduces higher order harmonics; thereby, resulting in an improved power quality at AC mains. Moreover, the design of the autotransformer is modified to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. To validate the proposed approach, various power quality indices are presented under varying loads. Experimental results obtained on the developed converter are given to validate the model and design of the proposed converter.

  • X-ray or ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy systems are widely used for analyzing material characteristics. Pile-up pulses are very often encountered for several reasons in XRF systems. Thus, it is necessary to reject or recover pile-up pulses to accurately analyze the material under test. In this paper, a pile up pulse rejection and recovery method is presented for XRF systems using trapezoidal pulse shaping of the input signals. Since the proposed method is based on the trapezoidal pulse shaping method widely-used in XRF systems, only two counters and a few registers are needed to implement the additional function of pile-up pulse rejection and recovery. Consequently, the proposed system is much simpler than conventional pulse reconstruction systems. It is shown that the proposed method can detect and reject pile-up pulses exactly. It is also shown that the pile-up pulses can be recovered if some conditions are satisfied.

  • This paper presents a method of designing hybrid analog/asymmetrical square-root (SR) FIR filters. In addition to the conventional frequency domain constraints, the proposed method considers time-domain constraints as well, including the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and the opening of the eye pattern at the receiver output. This paper also reviews a systematic way to find the discrete-time equivalence of analog parts in a band-limited digital communication system. Thus, a phase equalizer can be easily realized to compensate for the nonlinear phase responses of the analog components. With the hybrid analog/SR FIR filter co-design, examples show that using the proposed method can result in a more robust ISI performance in the presence of the receiver clock jitter.

  • Precise temperature monitoring is the major preconditioning to supervise quality losses within the transport chain for fresh products. ISO/IEC18000-6REV1 defines new protocols supporting BAP(Battery Assisted Passive) RFID tag which is completely compatible with EPCglobal Class1 Generation2 specification. In this paper, we designed a modem supporting BAP RFID tag with FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) and implemented sensor data processing function defined in ISO/IEC18000-6REV1. The transmit block of the modem supports pulse shaping filter and the output signal of the implemented RFID reader is satisfied with the spectrum mask defined in the standard. The receive block of the modem uses Gardner TED to synchronize timing of symbol. In this paper, we designed a modem supporting ISO/IEC18000-6REV1 standard and developed a RFID reader sndard. The developed RFID reader sndard can recognize sensor tag and passive tag in the wireless environment and supports real-time processing of the sensor data in the embedded linux platform.

  • In this paper, the DMR(Digital Microwave Radio) system-based OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme in microwave channel environments has been proposed and system performances have been evaluated. The existing single carrier DMR system has a complex system structure due to using high-level QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) modulation scheme and so charmel capacity is limited by sensitive effects from fading. Therefore, in the proposed DMR system, it uses that the OFDM scheme for enhancement of fading distortion and also uses that the band-limited pulse shaping filter instead of windowing for no additional data such as GI/GB and for using efficient of IFFT/FFT block. The performance of OFDM/QPSK-DMR system and single carrier DMR system are analysed by computer simulation using two-ray model under the microwave channel environments The computer simulation results confirm that the fade margin of the proposed OFDM/QPSK-DMR system is highly increased as the number of sub-carriers is larger.

  • In this paper, a decision-feedback coherent code tracking loop is designed for WCDMA systems and its performance is analyzed in terms of jitter variance considering the effect of phase and symbol estimation errors for both AWGN and fading environments. An analytical closed-form formula for jitter variance is Int derived for AWGN environments as a function of a pulse-shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth while involving the phase estimation error and bit error rate, and the upper bound of jitter variance is derived for fading environments. Finally a second-order coherent code tracking loop is designed with the DPCH frame format #13 of the WCDHA forward link selected as a target system, and its performance is evaluated by the closed-form formula and compared with the simulation results for both AWGN and Rayleigh fading environments.

  • This paper deals with a new wave shaping technique for cost effective harmonic mitigation in ac-dc converter feeding Vector Controlled Induction Motor Drives(VCIMD's) for improving power quality at the point of common coupling(PCC). The proposed harmonic mitigator consists of a polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse ac-dc converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned for $11^{th}$ harmonic frequency. This ac-dc converter eliminates the most dominant $5^{th},\;7^{th},\;and\;11^{th}$ harmonics and imposes the reduction of other higher order harmonics from the ac main current, thereby improving the power quality at ac mains. The design of autotransformer is carried out for the proposed ac-dc converter to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse ac-dc converter is used. The effect of load variation on VCIMD is also studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ac-dc converter in a wide operating range of the drive. Experimental results obtained on the developed laboratory prototype of the proposed harmonic mitigator are used to validate the model and design of the ac-dc converter.
