The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow of a non-Newtonian fluid through a bifurcated tube. All the process was based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. To define a non-Newtonian fluid, the following viscous models are used; the Powell-Eyring model, the modified Powell-Eyring model, the Cross model, the modified Cross model, the Carreau model, the Carreau-Yasuda model and the modified Power Law model. The flow calculation data using each model were compared with the other data of a existing paper. Finally, the Carreau model was recognized to give the best result with the SC/Tetra code, and the succeeding simulations are made with the model. For the pulsating flow condition, the sine wave type velocity profile is given as the inlet boundary condition. To investigate the effect of geometries and mesh, the pre-test is carried out with various curvature conditions of the bifurcated corner, and then with various mesh conditions. The final process is to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and the wall shear stress gradient (WSSG). To validate all the result, the simulation is compared with the existing data of the other papers. Generally speaking, there is a noticeable difference in the maximum and minimum value of WSS. It is not sure that the values in each data are on the exactly same location. However, the overall trend is similar. The next study needs to investigate the same situation by experimental method. Furthermore, if the flow is simulated with more pulsatile conditions, more data of flow field through a bifurcated tube could be achieved.

The flow characteristics have been numerically investigated for various shapes of the diffuser/nozzles which are used for a valveless micro-pump. The important parameters considered in this study are the throat width ($15\~120\mu$m), the taper angle ($3.15\~25.2^{\circ}$), and the diffuser length ( $600\~4,800\mu$m), and the size of the middle chamber ($1\~16mm^2$). To find the optimal values for these parameters, steady state calculations have been performed assuming the constant pressure difference between the inlet and exit of the flow For the taper angle and the throat width, it is found that there exists an optimum at which the net flow rate is the greatest. The optimal taper angle is in the range of $10\~20^{\circ}$ for all the pressure differences; and the throat width indicates an optimal value near $75\mu$m for the case of 35 kPa pressure difference. The net flow rate is also influenced by the size of the middle chamber. With decreasing chamber size, the net flow rate is reduced because of the interference between two streams flowing into the middle chamber. The unsteady pulsating flow characteristics for a micro-pump with a given diffuser/nozzle shape have been also investigated to show the validity of the steady state parametric study.

This study considered the feasibility of controlling the air concentration by oscillating flow in fuel cell channels. The fuel cell stack performance is largely influenced by the air concentration. If the air concentration is lower than 2.5 times the stoichiometric of the inlet air, the fuel cell stack performance seriously deteriorates because of air starvation. In this respect, optimizing the air concentration is crucially important to maximizing the fuel cell stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation were studied to control the concentration. Studies have shown that there are two non-dimensional key parameters related to the frequency and oscillating amplitude. This paper presents how those parameters affect the performance of the stack.

The torque of the SRM((Switched Reluctance Motor)) is proportional to the inductance slope, so it has a non-linear torque characteristic, and has a disadvantage in that the torque pulsation is large and noise is severe. In particular, the biggest obstacle to the commercialization of SRM is the pulsating torque generated from the rotating shaft, which has various adverse effects not only on the device itself but also on the peripheral devices. Therefore, various methods for reducing the pulsating torque have been published by domestic and foreign researchers, and there is a study result that the hysteresis controller has an advantage in that it can flow a smooth current compared to the chopping control. However, in determining the hysteresis band, if the band is too small, it has a disadvantage in that it may cause a switching loss due to many switching and an unstable initial start when the encoder is used. Therefore, in this paper, a variable hysteresis controller that can reduce torque ripple in a steady state while having a more stable and fast speed response through the change of the hysteresis band according to the speed error.

Noise and vibration, which occur in a pipe, are usually caused by the interaction between the turbulent flow and nearby wall. Although it can be estimated by a simple case of expanded pipes having complex turbulent flow, the radiated noise is highly dependent upon the size, shape, and thickness of the given model. In addition, the radiated noise propagates and has serious interference and destabilization effects on the surrounding systems, which can lead to fatigue fracture and failure. This study took advantage of the variety of commercial programs, such as FLUENT (flow solver), NASTRAN (dynamic motion solver of complex structures) and VIRTUAL LAB (radiated noise solver) based on the boundary element method (BEM), to understand the underlying physics of flow noise. The expanded pipe has separation and a high pressure drop because of the abrupt change in the cross-section. Based on the radiated noise calculations, the noise level was reduced to around 20 dB in the range of 100-500 Hz.

In this study, the SST k - ω turbulence model and the sliding mesh technology based on RANS method have been adopted to simulate the exciting force and hydrodynamic of a pump-jet propulsor in different oblique inflow angle (0°, 10°, 20°, 30°) and different advance ratio (J = 0.95, J = 1.18, J = 1.58).The fully structured grid and full channel model have been adopted to improved computational accuracy. The classical skewed marine propeller E779A with different advance ratio was carried out to verify the accuracy of the numerical simulation method. The grid independence was verified. The time-domain data of pump-jet propulsor exciting force including bearing force and fluctuating pressure in different working conditions was monitored, and then which was converted to frequency domain data by fast Fourier transform (FFT). The variation laws of bearing force and fluctuating pressure in different advance ratio and different oblique flow angle has been presented. The influence of the peak of pulsation pressure in different oblique flow angle and different advance ratio has been presented. The results show that the exciting force increases with the increase of the advance ratio, the closer which is to the rotor domain and the closer to the blades tip, the greater the variation of the pulsating pressure. At the same time, the exciting force decrease with the oblique flow angle increases. And the vertical and transverse forces will change more obviously, which is the main cause of the exciting force. In addition, the pressure distribution and the velocity distribution of rotor blades tip in different oblique flow angles has been investigated.
Flows over a square cylinder with and without plasma actuation are numerically investigated to see whether plasma actuation can effectively modify vortex shedding from the cylinder and reduce the drag and lift fluctuations. In this study, a plasma synthetic jet actuator is mounted on the rear side of cylinder as a means of direct-wake control. The effect of plasma actuation is considered by adding a momentum forcing term in the Navier-Stokes equations. Results show that the reduction of mean drag and lift fluctuations is obtained for both steady and unsteady actuation. However, the steady actuation is better than the unsteady one in terms of mean drag as well as drag fluctuations. With the strong steady actuation considered, the interaction of two separating shear layers from rear corners is effectively weakened due to the interference of synthetic jets. It results in a merging of synthetic-jet and shear-layer vortices and the increase of vortex shedding frequency. On the other hand, the unsteady actuation generates pulsating synthetic jets in the near wake, but it does not change the vortex shedding frequency for the actuation frequencies considered in this study.

The use of an Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) for a diesel engine with variable geometry turbocharger(VGT) has confronted how to obtain the amount of EGR for NOx reduction requirement at wide operating range and less side effect. Through a combined effort of modeling(wave action simulation) and experiment, an investigation into the effect of EGR area ratio and pipe length on EGR characteristics of common rail diesel engine with VGT has been performed. For accurate computation, calibration of constants involved in empirical and semi-empirical correlations has been performed at a specific operating point, before of its use for engine simulation. From the results of this study, it was found that EGR rate is sharply increased with increasing EGR area ratio until area ratio of 0.3. However, the effect of EGR area ratio on EGR rate is negligible beyond this criteria. This study also investigates the effect of EGR pipe length on a EGR amount and pulsating flow characteristics at EGR junction. The results showed that the longer EGR pipe length, the lower EGR amount was achieved due to the flow loss resulting in lower amplitude of pressure wave.

A double-inlet pulse tube refrigerator was fabricated as a U-shape with $\Phi$19.0 mm${\times}$125 mm regenerator packed by #200 stainless steel mesh and $\Phi$12.7 mm${\times}$125 mm pulse tube. A pressure sensor was installed at the inlet of the regenerator and a differential pressure sensor was installed across the bypass. Amplitude of the pulsating pressure was independent of the opening of the orifice and the bypass valves. Helium flow through the orifice and the bypass was calculated based on the measured pressure. Energy loss through the orifice and the bypass was evaluated with the measured pressure and the calculated helium flow rate. The energy loss, which is equivalent to the refrigeration capacity at the cold end of the ideal pulse tube refrigerator, was mainly generated through the orifice. It was proportional to the opening of the orifice valve, but the real refrigerator displayed the best performance at the optimized opening of the orifice valve. This optimized performance of the tested pulse tube refrigerator can be explained by additional refrigeration losses. As an example, the shuttle heat transfer loss of the pulse tube was calculated from the measured experimental data.

Experimental results of pulsating pressure behavior inside a chamber have been confirmed by computational work. Inside-cylinder pressure shows unstable condition at low rpm. This is caused by plate-type suction valve. It has effect up to inlet of the chamber. But trembling phenomenon is reduced as the pressure is enlarged by increasing the rpm. Result comparison between experimental and numerical analysis shows pulsation reduction is affected by the chamber. We can confirm that compressible effect of the working flow is shown at chamber inlet by increasing rpm. On the other side, this effect is declined at chamber outlet by increasing rpm. It means outlet pressure is going on balance with atmosphere pressure. Buffer plate-type chamber has efficiency of pulsation flow reduction.
