The rice husk is one of the major agricultural residue in KOREA. In this paper, the effects of various pulping conditions on the properties of rice husk pulp and handsheets made of rice husk fiber were evaluated in order to utilize the rice husk as an alternative source for wood pulp. Two typical alkali pulping, such as soda pulping and Kraft pulping were applied with various conditions of the pulping processes. The higher effective alkali and higher pulping temperature resulted in the higher efficiency in removal of lignin and ash, which leaded to the higher strength properties of handsheets made of rice husk fiber, but the lower yield of rice husk pulp. The better efficiency in production of rice husk pulp and the stronger handsheets were obtained by the Kraft pulping.

Three different species of cattails (Typha orientalis, Typha angustata, Typha latifolia) cultivated in South Korea were examined as raw materials for the production of pulp and paper. Soda pulping with anthraquinone was used for the stems and the leaves of cattail, separately. Addition of anthraquinone in soda pulping improved the yield greatly. Chemical components between three cattail species and within each species (leaves and stem) gave little differences. Average fiber length of the bleached cattail fibers was a little shorter than that of the HwBKP of Eucalyptus. Average fiber width of the cattail fibers was a half of that of the HwBKP. Compared to the HwBKP, cattail pulp gave higher breaking length, higher opacity, and better smoothness at equivalent freeness.

This study was carried out to investigate the sheet properties of Morus Hanji, made by different pulping methods, such as alkali, alkali-peroxide and sulfomethylated pulping, and different stocks composed to bast and whole stalk fibers. Two species of Morus, M. alba and M. lhou, were used. Pulp yield of the whole stalk parts, its brightness and opacity were higher than those of bast part. In particular sulfomethylated pulp has higher brightness of $62{\sim}63%$, than other pulps(average brightness $30{\sim}40%$). In mechanical properties, paper made of bast fiber has higher strength than those of the whole stalks. Hanji made from M. lhou, whole stalk, and sulfomethylated pulp gave better sheet formation and higher strength than those of the others. Hanji from M. alba bast fiber and whole stalk pulps were not so good sheet properties.

The mechanical strength is the prime requisite for linerboard and corrugating mediums. Repeatedly recycled OCC fibers show less suitable property for papermaking mostly due to hornification and reduced fiber length. To overcome these problems many researches including fractionation, enzymatic treatment, and chemical or mechanical treatments of fibers have been carried out. In this study, the effect of mechanical treatment by high consistency pulping on the characteristics of recycled fibers as well as mechanical properties of sheets were investigated. Results on the strength properties of handsheets made of recycled fibers that were treated to same freeness level by beating and high consistency pulping, respectively, showed that beating treatment was more efficient in improving strength. Drainage and recycling potential of the fibers treated by high consistency pulping, however, were expected to be superior to beating because fines content and fiber length didn't change significantly.
White Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) is one of the fast growing species in Indonesia and has the potential as the raw material for pulp and paper. In this research, 3, 5, and 7 years old White Jabon woods were pulped under different active alkali charge of 15%, 18%, 21%, 24%, and 27%, and its effect on delignification degree, kappa number, pulp yield, pulp viscosity, brightness, unbeaten freeness, and delignification selectivity was investigated. The results showed that tree age and active alkali concentration influenced the quality of pulp and pulping properties, except for that of unbeaten freeness. Delignification degree increased with increasing active alkali charge, and this brought about the decrease of pulp kappa number. The pulping yield tended to decrease below the Klason lignin of approximately 4%. Even though the 3 years old wood resulted in the highest brightness and highest delignification selectivity, the highest pulp viscosity was obtained with the 5 years old wood. The dominant fiber length of all wood ages was in the range of 1.2 - 2.0 mm. The 3 years old wood was considered to be the most promising raw material for kraft pulping in the view point of pulping properties, pulp quality and harvesting rotation.

This study was carried out to investigate the sheet formation properties of Morus Hanjis, made of bast and whole stalk pulps by different pulping methods, such as alkali, alkali-peroxide and sulfomethylated pulping. Two species of Morus, M. alba and M. lhou, were used. Effect of morphological properties of pulp stocks on the sheet formation and its gray levels based on optical property were evaluated using an Image analyzer. In addition, the effect of fiber distribution index(FDI) which was calculated from tile data of Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) on the sheet formation and optical properties of Morus Hanji were also discussed. On the sheet formation, Hanji from whole stalk pulp was superior than that of bast pulp. The more the sheet formation improved, the more paper opacity decreased. In the aspect of Hanji's surface characteristics analyzed by an Image analyzer, the average gray level and its standard deviation of Hanji from the whole stalk pulp were rather lower than those of bast pulp because of better sheet formation of the former. However, high brightness Hanji showed high value of gray level. The sheet formation and paper opacity were increased with the decrease of standard deviation of gray level. From these results, gray level measurement could be used to predict the paper opacity as well as sheet formation. Sheet formation of whole stalk Hanji and its FDI measured by CLSM were higher than those of bast fibers. In conclusion, the sheet formation and opacity of Hanji could be evaluated by standard deviation value of Hanji's gray level using an Image analyzer and by fiber distribution index using CLSM.
Bio-kraft pulping of Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa pretreated with white-rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium KCCM 34740, was investigated The biopulping efficiency was evalued based on fungal pretreatment time and properties of bio-kraft pulp (pulp yield, freeness, WRY, kappa number and brightness) in comparison to the controls. Pretreatment of poplar wood chips with Phanerochaete chrysosporium KCCM 34740 for 10days resulted in a some increase in screened yield (by 2%). According to increase of fungal incubation time, decrease in freeness (CSF) and increase in WRY were observed And bio-kraft pulping also led to improvement of physical properties of handsheet. As a result of bio-beating effect, we expect the saving of chemicals in kraft cooking process and energy consumption in beating process.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was made from oil palm trunk (OPT) with soda-anthraquinone pulping, chlorine dioxide bleaching, carboxymethylation, followed by mechanical grinding. Size of this CNF was 16-40 nm of width confirmed by TEM. To evaluate CNF from OPT as cosmetics raw materials for moisturizing component, water holding properties was compared with hyaluronic acid and collagen. CNF from OPT had better water holding property than collagen or hyaluronic acid whether phenoxyethanol was added as antiseptic or without additive.

The function of the moisture-proof paper is to prevent moisture from adsorbing into the packed goods. Water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper should be less than 100g/$m^2$.24hr and the optimum rate would be less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper was to make moisture-proof paper using the mixture of SB latex and wax emulsion which was recyclable and environmentally friendly. Water vapor transmission rate showed less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr in mixture ratio of 85:15, 87:13, 90:10. Especially the mixture ratio of 87:13 showed the most favorable water-vapor transmission rate. However, the moisture-proof layer was destroyed slightly by folding in packing. It has been observed that there was no close relationship between water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper and grammage of the base paper, but the density of base paper had influenced on water vapor transmission rate. It was also observed that the moisture-proof paper could be recycled. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of the pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particles which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping were measured to examine the fiber bonding, and no significant difference in physical properties was observed.
There are a lot of serious problums associated with conventional pulping processes, such as kraft and sulfite. In order to tackle these difficulties, organic acid pulping of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. have been investigated as on alternative method. The acetic acid cooking of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee achieved good delignification with pulp yields of 55-65% under almost all cooking conditions. In the acetic acid cooking of Pinus densiflora S. et Z., it was not cooked at a low temperature. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee showed the optimum with 95% acetic acid concentration at $185^{\circ}C$ maximum cooking temperature for 0.5hr cooking time. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. displayed excellent tear strength in comparison with those of the other softwoods. In the process of acetic acid cooking, glucose has been removed a little, but other sugars have been eliminated. The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee were 63.88% carbon, 5.45% hydrogen and 30.67% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.24}$ The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 61.85% carbon, 6.14% hydrogen and 32.01% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.50}$ The Wt. av. MWT's of the acetosolv lignins from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 731 and 725.
