  • Tensile energy absorption in paper has long been measured as the area under the load-elongation curve. Little effort has been made to define where and how that energy is used within the paper itself. Characterization of tensile energy absorption in paper is discussed. Multiple small elements within newsprint and kraft sack have been defined and the energy absorbed in those elements are discussed. The tensile profiles of the weak paper, newsprint, and the tough paper, kraft sack, are presented as separate strain profiles, stress profiles, and strain energy density profiles. This allows a complete analysis of the energy absorption of both papers for comparison or contrast.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of chitosan molecular weight, its charge density, and its surface coating treatment on the antibacterial properties of paper. For this study, E.coil was used for antibacterial experiment. Results obtained were as follows : 1. The antibacterial properties of chitosan was significant on the surface-treated sheet. 2. Antibacterial property surface treatment was appeared to be effective when film was formed on the paper surface. 3. The antibacterial properties of chitosan-treated paper was dependent on the amount and the molecular weight of chitosan used. The lower the molecular weight of the chitosan down to 30,000 the better the antibacterial properties in this experiment. 4. Determination of the degree of chitosan-deacetylation by colloidal titration method was consistent with the more complicated and conventional FT-IR method.

  • This study was to quantify fiber distributions in thickness direction of kenaf handsheets as a fiber distribution index (FDI) and to analyze the relationship between FDI and the handsheet properties. The images of fiber distribution in z-direction were obtained by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) and analyzed by image analysis technique. The proposed FDI had a good correlation with high R2 vlaues with various properties of paper, such as apparent density, scattering coefficient , burst index, tear index, tensile index, and folding endurance. The proposed FDI was shown as a good index to quantify paper properties.

  • Formation which is an indicator of nonuniformity in fiber distribution is concerned with small scale variation in roughness, optical properties, print density, and so on. This study evaluated the formation of sheets which were made usning handsheet former and paper-machine with hydraulic headbox. Optical method and ${\beta}-ray$ method were used for formation test. The fiber type, freeness and basis weight of sheet were considered as variables. The formation of handsheet was affected by fiber type and freeness, and floe size distribution was influenced by basis weight. For machine made sheet, its formation seemed to be dependent on the hydraulic forces in headbox and former. When two formation test methods were compared, there was the highest relationship between optical formation index and normalized standard deviation from ${\beta}-ray$ method.

  • The effects of polyelectrolytes and enzyme, alone and in combination, were investigated in OCC recycling system. Four types of the polyelectrolytes based on acrylamide, cationic and anionic monomers were applied to the enzyme-treated KOCC stock to improve the strength and drainage properties of testliner. The polyelectrolytes used in this work were designed in terms of molecular weight and charge density. The water conditions used for recycling were also varied. The results showed that the hydrolytic action of enzyme gave reduced surface area and amorphous region of fiber, and as a result, the cationic polymer was lost apparently its flocculating power due to the reduced bonding site of fiber surface. When the hardness and conductivity of water had been controlled to the conditins of OCC paper mill, the application of amphoteric polyelectrolyte to the enzyme-treated recycled stock was the most effective with respect to the strength and drainage properties of testliner.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm paper strengthening properties with recently commercialized polyvinylamine. Because of its high cationic charge density, polyvinylamine has been investigated as a size retention and surface coating aids. In this study, we tried to confirm polyvinylamine as wet-end additives to improve dry and wet strength using LBKP and BCTMP pulps. As a result, we found improvement of dry and wet tensile properties of polyvinylamine with BCTMP were much better than LBKP condition. This phenomena could be explained that ionic bonding of cationic charge of polyvinylamine with abundant anionic substances of BCTMP was a very important factor to improve dry and wet strength of paper.

  • In this paper, PVA(polyvinylalcohol), oxidized starch and SBR latex were used as binders for ink-jet printing papers, and their effects of the type and blending ratio of binders on ink-jet printing properties were compared. In case of coating color using PVA mainly used for a binder in ink-jet printing, spreading of printed letters decreased and excellent images were manifested resulting from strong hydrophilic of PVA. However, increasing solids content of coating color was somewhat limited because of the interaction of PVA and functional groups in silica as well as high molecular weight of PVA. When oxidized starch and SBR latex were mixed with PVA at desirable ratio to solve these problems, runnability in coating process was improved and good printing properties were shown. Gloss was improved when latex was used along with PVA as a binder because of the thermoplastic property of the latex. From this result, possibilities of high solids content and high gloss ink-jet printing papers were investigated.

  • Condebelt drying provides opportunities not only of improving the strength properties and saving of drying energy but also of reducing the basis weight or increasing the utilization of recycled furnishes. In this paper general overview of the Condebelt press drying will be described and the effects of the process variables in Condebelt press drying including drying temperature, pressure, drying time and moisture content of the sheets on the paper properties is discussed. The experiment was performed with a static rig and Korean OCC was used as a principal raw material. Significant improvement in sheet density, compression strength, tensile strength, surface smoothness, etc. was obtained when Condebelt drying was applied. Control of pressure and inlet dryness was found to be very critical in improving sheet properties. Mill experiences from Dong Il Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd is briefly described.

  • The trend of using more hardwood and recycled fibers, and closing more tightly of the paper mill white water system has resulted in build-up of fines as well as organic and inorganic contaminants in the white water. This changes in papermaking wet end requires developing chemical additive system that provides good fiber retention and drainage in closed white water system. In this study the effect of charge densities and chemical characteristics of microparticle systems consisted of cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols on drainage and retention have been examined. Results showed that higher charge density of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica sol gave better retention and drainage. Particularly highly structured silica gave greater retention efficiency.

  • This research was performed to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of Chanhoji manufactured with the traditional method. This research would provide a basic information for its application in the manufacture of Korean-style house. A piece of Changhoji was manufactured to have a weight of 3.75 g. The weight was increased with the basic weight and no increase was not found on its density. The strength properties of Changhoji are superior to a copying paper, and the quality showed the first grade in Korean Standard (KS M 7301). The air resistance varied with the thickness from 2 to 19 seconds, but it showed better performance than a copying paper having 38 seconds. This research would be used for the practical use in understanding the ventilation and lightening properties of windows and doors in Korean-style house.
