Purpose: In case of postburn flexion contracture of the fingers, skin graft, geometrical relaxation techniques, local flap, and free flap have been used. Among these procedures, full-thickness skin grafts from the inguinal area are widely used to reconstruct a postburn flexion contracture in the fingers. But there are many esthetic and functional problems in this procedure. Especially, hyperpigmentation of the skin-grafted fingers poses a troublesome problem, particularly in the patients who have dark colored skin. To solve the problem, we have used pulp graft which was harvested from the lateral aspect of great toe. In the present study, we report pulp graft, with which we have obtained a good result in the treatment of postburn flexion contracture of the fingers. Methods: Between September of 2004 and August of 2006, great toe pulp graft was performed to 20 sites of 15 patients. After release of the postburn flexion contracture using Z-plasty, the composite tissue (pulp) harvested from the lateral aspect of great toe was grafted on the raw surface. Moisture dressing with ointment and foam dressing material was performed. Stratum corneum of the graft got stripped off in two to four weeks after pulp graft. The color of the pulp graft was slightly reddish, then it became similar to the adjacent tissue. Results: There was complete take in all the patients who were treated with pulp graft. Great toe pulp graft provided similar color and texture to the adjacent skin, high rate of graft take, and left only a minimal scar at donor site. Conclusion: Thick keratin layer and inelastic nature of the pulp make this type of the graft much easier and simpler, and ensure a better take. Pulp graft is useful method for the reconstruction of the postburn flexion contracture in fingers.
Purpose: Exact knowledge of the location and dimension of the pulp chamber help to maintain the pulp healthy during operative procedure and also reduces the risk of perforation of pulp chamber during root canal treatment. This in-vivo study was carried out to measure critical morphology of pulp chamber of mandibular molar using intra-oral periapical radiograph. Materials and Methods: Mandibular molar teeth of 56 patients were evaluated. The mandibular molar teeth whose pulp chamber was not violated by caries, restoration, fracture crown and those having closed apex were included in the study. The intraoral periapical radiographs were taken with paralleling angle technique using radio-opaque grid with 1 mm space. This grid was placed directly on the film. Results: In 94% of the mandibular first molars specimens the pulp chamber ceiling was at the level of the cemento-enamel junction. The measurements showing the lowest percentage variance were buccal cusp to furcation (approximately 11%) and buccal cusp to pulp chamber ceiling (approximately 15%). The distance from the cusp tip to pulp chamber ceiling height was approximately 6.0 mm, the distance from the pulpal floor to the furcation was approximately 3.0 mm, and the average height of a pulp chamber was 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Conclusion: The exact knowledge of distances of pulp chamber from various anatomical landmarks helps in proper assessment of root canals and ultimately avoids the failure of root canal treatment.
The coniferous fallen leaf is one of the major forestry residues. Since the coniferous fallen leaf would not be easily decayed, the large amount of the coniferous fallen leaves in forestry could be the source of forest fire. The applicability of the fallen leaves to the pulp mold were evaluated for developing new utilization of coniferous fallen leaves. The morphological properties and the chemical composition of the fallen leaves of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were evaluated by the comparison with those of fresh leaves. The applicability of the coniferous fallen leaves to the pulp mold and the effects on the pulp mold properties including the scent diffusion were investigated. The fallen leaves showed the shrunk structure by losing the hot water extract component, which leaded to better grinding properties than that of fresh leaves. The pulp mold with fallen leaves showed higher strength properties than the pulp mold with fresh leaves. Although the scent of the pulp mold with fresh leaves was stronger, the pulp mold with fallen leaves had coniferous scent too. The application of fallen leaves to pulp mold for the functional properties could be possible by improving the mechanical properties and the scent lasting treatments.
The purpose of the present study was to measure and compare the arachidonic acid metabolites in diseased periodontal tissue and vital pulp tissue of the tooth, and to investigate the relationship between periodontal and pulp disease. Diseased periodontal tissue of periodontally involved human teeth and vital pulp tissue from the same teeth which were intact with no periapical lesions were obtained. Each periodontal and pulp tissue homogenates from the same tooth were incubated with $^{14}C$ - arachidonic acid. Lipid solvent extracts were separated by thin layer chromatography to be analyzed by autoradiography and TLC analyzer. 1. The conversion into $TXB_2$, 6 - keto - $PGF_{1a}$ and $PGE_2$, and unidentified metabolite in pulp tissue were less than that in diseased periodontal tissue(P<0.05). 2. Biosynthetic levels of $TXB_2$, unidentified metabolite, 6 - keto - $PGF_{1a}$ and HETEs were not satistically significant between diseased periodontal tissue and pulp tissue. $LTB_4$ was measured highly in pulp tissue(P<0.1). 3. The percentage of each metabolite to the total converted metabolites were not statistically significant between diseased periodontal tissue and pulp tissue. But the percentage of $LTB_4$ in pulp tissue was higher than that in diseased periodontal tissue(P<0.05). 4. The relative amounts of the total metabolites formed in lipoxygenase pathway to those formed in cyclo - oxygenase pathway were 6 fold in diseased periodontal tissue and 12 fold in pulp tissue. But there was no statistical significance between diseased periodontal tissue and pulp tissue(P>0.05).
Hwaseonji(Korean traditional paper) used for writing and painting has been made from the mulberry bast-fiber and the short-length fiber pulps, wood pulps. However, besides wood pulps, other short-length fiber pulps also can be used instead of wood pulps. Hence, this research was carried out to make the various Hwaseonjis with the different properties, using the five kinds of short-length fiber pulps respectively. The short-length fiber pulps used in this research were softwood bleached kraft pulp(SwBKP) hardwood bleached kraft pulp(HwBKP), rice-straw bleached sulfite pulp(RsBSP), bamboo bleached kraft pulp(BbBKP) and recycled pulp from vellem paper(RP). And, the mixture ratios of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and short-length fiber pulps were 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 and 20:80. After various Hwaseonjis were made from different mixtures mentioned above with hand-made method, physical properties and chinese ink blot property of each paper were measured. The strengthes were the highest in the Hwaseonji made from the mixture of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and SwBKP. However, chinese ink blot property and smoothness were better when RsBSP, BbBKP or RP were mixed into the mulberry bast-fiber pulp. As a result, the various kinds of Hwaseonjis which the users can choose based on their needs were made.

Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) attacked pine was evaluated for pulp quality, chemical and physical properties, and bleachability. Chemical analyses showed that the dehydroabietic acid and total acetone extractives content were higher in the year 3 (grey) attacked MPB chips and lower in the year 5 (grey) attacked MPB chips as compared to a typical SPF (spruce/pine/fir) reference. Lignin and carbohydrate content of the MPB wood chips were comparable to the SPF. Similarly, there was little difference in kappa number, pulp yield and liquor consumption between the 3 and 5 year MPB attacked wood. Likewise there was no significant difference in the resulting tear strength, burst, or tensile strength. There appeared to be an improved bleaching response in the MPB attacked pulp as compared to the SPF reference, but this was accompanied by a slightly lower bleached pulp yield and higher bleach filtrate COD and solids content.
Xylanase (X) derived from Aurreobasidium pullulans and laccase-mediator system (LM) using Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 laccase (TrL) and N-hydroxy-2-pyridone analogue (NHP) as a mediator were applied in hardwood kraft pulp (HwKP) bleaching. The individual and the synergistic effects of X and LM stage were investigated in the enzymatic bleaching of HwKP. Also, the effects of subsequent alkaline extraction (E) and alkaline/hydrogen peroxide treatment (P) were examined. In X or LM treatment alone, an appreciable bleaching effect of HwKP was not observed, whereas subsequent E or P stage enhanced the increase of brightness and the decrease of kappa number. Especially, P stage significantly enhanced the bleaching effect of pulp. Bleaching of HwKP with XLM sequentially gave significantly higher pulp brightness and lower kappa number than that obtained after the treatment of HwKP with X+LM simultaneously. When HwKP was sequentially treated with XLM followed by P stage, the brightness increased by about 11% ISO and the kappa number decreased by about 3.6 in comparison with the initial pulp. Xylanase and laccase were strongly inactivated by NHP both in the absence and the presence of pulp.
Moso Bamboo was investigated as the a raw material for pulp and paper industry. Soda-Anthraquinone (Soda-AQ) pulping, elemental chlorine free bleaching was applied. Yield of soda or soda-AQ pulp was 29.3-31.7% with Kappa number 33.0-22.8 with different cooking time or anthraquinone addition at 20% active alkali. In soda or soda-AQ pulping, 81-86% of xylan was removed, which was the main reason for lower pulp yield than hardwood species. Average fiber length of Moso Bamboo soda-AQ pulp was 1.36 mm with $15.5{\mu}m$ fiber width. Soda-AQ pulp from Moso Bamboo (P-3, lowest Kappa pulp) was bleached with 5.5-6.5% of chlorine dioxide charge as D0ED1 bleaching sequence. In 3-stages ECF bleaching, final brightness of 85.3% ISO was achieved with total chlorine dioxide 6.5%.
In order to give pulp surfaces anti-bacterial functionality and photo-catalytic deodorant ability, functional pulps was made using a surface modification method with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ filler. Hygiene paper was made with the specially modified pulp, and anti-bacterial and deodorant tests were carried out. The Ag nano-colloidal solution was coated on the surface of the pulp using the high pressurized gas phase squirt through the spray nozzle mounted on the hybridization system. The surface modified functional pulp was hybridized with the optimum ratio of $TiO_2$(fine particle) to pulp(core particle) under the condition of $6,000{\sim}10,000$ rpm for $3{\sim}7$ minutes in the system. The anti-bacterial functionality of the hygiene paper was confirmed by the halo test in which the formation of the clear zone around the hygiene paper sample was observed. The inhibition growth test using MIC bioscreen C showed the inhibition growth effect of the bacteria as the reaction time was increased. The photo-catalytic effect measurement of the $TiO_2$ for 4 hours of the reaction showed $50{\sim}60%$ of decomposition rate, reaching over 60% for 5 hours of the reaction.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of four levels (0, 10, 20, 40 %) of sugar-beet pulp (SB pulp) supplementation to Italian ryegrass hay (IRG hay) on the fiber degradability of IRG hay in the rumen of goats. The following results were obtained: Degradabilities of DM, NDF, ADF and hemicellulose of IRG hay in the rumen increased significantly (p<0.05) by 10 % level supplementation of SB pulp to IRG hay. This was probably due to the increased numbers (p<0.05) of total viable bacteria, pectin-fermenting, xylan-fermenting and cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen in the increased supply of degradable pectic substances and hemicellulose at 10% level supplementation of SB pulp pectin. In 40% supplementation of SB pulp, ruminal pH was lowered by the fermentation of increased amount of molasses from SB pulp, resulting in the depression of growth of fiber fermenting bacteria and hence the decrease in degradabilities of cell wall fractions. It was suggested from this study that the sugar-beet pulp supplementation to forages at the level of 10% in the total diet increased fiber degradation of forage in the rumen of goats.
