  • With electron microscope, author studied on the pulp structure of human primary tooth in shedding stage. Non-carious human primary molar teeth were selected for this study. Using standard methods, specimens were sectioned and examined by light and electron microscope, The results were as follows; 1. In coronal pulp, odontoblasts were replaced by multinucleated odontoclasts, which contained a large number of mitochondria of varying shape and vacuoles in cytoplasm. Where odontoclasts were in contact with tooth surface, the characteristic ruffled border and clear zone were observed. 2. Fibrous tissue with plentiful collagen fibers and fibroblasts was observed adjacent to the dentin in the pulp. Fibroblast contained a number of mitochondria and well-developed rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum. 3. Inflammatory cells were observed in the pulp and active fibroblasts could be seen between inflammatory cells. In many cases, cervical epithelium proliferated toward absorbed area. 4. Inflammatory cells consisted of a number of lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. Macrophage containing lysosomes in digestive state or phagocyting PMN could be seen. 5. In the primary molar of delayed root resorption, odontoblast layer, zone of Weil and cell-rich zone could be seen at roof of pulp chamber and odontoblast in this area cont과ained some lipid droplets.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of lateral middle phalangeal finger flap for pulp and palmar defect of the finger. Materials and methods: We performed the lateral middle phalangeal finger flap in thumb pulp defect 4 cases and the palmar defect of other finger 3 cases. Mean age was 38(25-53) years old and there were male 6 cases and female 1 case. Sensate flap was performed in 4 cases of thumb pulp defects. Mean follow-up period was 14(7-22) months. Results: All flaps were survived. Mean static two-pint discrimination of sensate flap 4 cases was 8(6-10) mm. The sensation of donor finger tip was normal in all cases. Limitation of range of motion of the donor fingers was absent. Patients complained of transient cold intolerance 1 month after surgery but didn't complain of that in all cases at last follow-up. Conclusions: The advantages of the lateral middle phalangeal finger flap are the preservation of the ipsilateral palmar digital nerve, good sensory reconstruction of the fingertip, well maintained donor finger mobility with minimal exposure of the extensor tendon, cosmetically good appearances of donor finger, and easy raising as a large flap. So we suggest that this flap is versatile for reconstructing of relatively large pulp defect of the thumb and the palmar defects involving the joint of finger.

  • Paper mills use and discharge lots of water. And so now the papermaking industry could be classified into major water consuming industry In order to analyze the process water network and to establish the mass, water balance of duplex board mill, computer aided simulation was made using water pinch method. Based on the pinch analysis results, reuse of process water, after regenerating by microfilter as much as $140\;m^3/hr$, could be suggested without significant accumulation of contaminants in process water. According to this suggestion about $3000\;m^3/day$ of recycled process water could be sub stituted by regenerated water and consequently $30\%$ of energy cost is expected to be reduced.

  • This study was performed to investigate the deinkability of Korean old newspaper(KONP) and the properties of newsprint made from deinked pulp with some addition of virgin pulp. When the samples of composed of 50% Australian old magazine(AuOMG) and 50% KONP were compared with the samples 50% AuOMG and 50% AuONP, the yield, opacity, strength properties of the former were high, but its brightness was low. When the mixing ratio of AuOMG : AuONP : KONP was 30:20:50, the brightness and strength properties were obtained the similar or better than those obtained samples having other mixing ratio. The brightness and opacity of samples made from deinked pulp with the some addition of TMP and BKP can meet the minium qualifications of brightness and opacity specified by Japanese Industrial Standard. The samples, which DIP, TMP, and KP were mixed with the ratio of the 85:10:5 and 90:5:5, maintained higher brightness and strength comparing to the samples containing higher amount of virgin pulp. Since the newsprint samples made from KONP was not inferior to those from imported old newspaper, the more use of KONP in producing newsprint is recommended.

  • In order to utilize unsorted ONP, which contains leaflets (printed coated papers), to produce pulp mold, optimum conditions for a repulping process were investigated with a laboratory high consistency pulper. It was concluded that medium or high consistency pulping is necessary to accelerate the rate of deflaking of unsorted ONP. Considering flake content, fines content and pulping energy, the optimum conditions for the laboratory Helico pulper were 11% of repulping concentration and 3 min of repulping time. The repulping temperature shall be at least $30^{\circ}C$. Aging of paper slows down the rate of de flaking but in an actual pulp molding process its effect could be negligible.

  • Paper mulberry fibers have been used as fibrous raw materials for manufacturing traditional handmade paper, hanji for a long time. Compared to wood pulp fibers, pulp fibers from mulberry bast tissue have some benefits in physical and chemical properties due to their high D.P (degree of polymerization), M.W (molecule weight) and long fiber length. Specially, Korean handmade hanji shows outstanding characteristics in mechanical tensile strength, folding endurance, flexibility and long sustainable conservation properties. Therefore, hanji is widely applied to daily supplies, hygienic goods, medical supplies, clothing industries and so on. Recently, the potential demand of mulberry pulp fibers is more and more increased on the strength of high application fields. This study was focused on the possibility of wastewater recycling in unit operation systems for the development of automated mass production line. The properties and environmental loads of wastewater from debarking, cooking, bleaching and screening process were analyzed by means of COD, conductivity, turbidity and solid materials. The wastewater from debarking and cooking process was comparatively high in pollution load, and would be treated by additional approaches of chemico-physical method.

  • Conditions of paper manufacturing process should be changed depending on the end use and paper properties. Most of the case, mixed pulps with long softwood fibers and short hardwood fibers are used to achieve proper qualities of product with reasonable production cost. For specialty paper manufacture the wood pulp and cotton linter pulp are usually mixed together. The objectives of this study is to analyze physical, mechanical and fracture mechanical properties of paper depending on SwBKP, HwBKP and cotton linter pulp(CLP) mixing. When the mixing ratio of SwBKP was increased, strength properties, such as tensile, tear, and folding endurance, were also increased. When the mixing ratio of SwBKP and HwBKP was increased, stress concentration index was decreased and fracture toughness was increased.

  • In this study, effects of alkali swelling at low concentration below 2 percent on properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) were elucidated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the swelling characteristics of pulp fiber was evaluated by measuring the solvent retention values such as water retention value (WRV) and isopropyl alcohol retention value (LRV). It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by NaOH swelling even at low alkali concentration and beating treatment as well. The values of WRV and LRV were decreased when the alkali concentration was increased. It is the result from the decreased acidic groups of pulp which were formed during beating. The acidic groups could be neutralized and then removed by alkali. The difference between WRV and LRV was decreased with increasing alkali concentration while the difference was increased when the alkali swollen pulp was beaten. In addition, the crystalline structure of HwBKP was almost not changed while the crystallinity was influenced by swelling treatment at a low alkali concentration.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the adsorption characteristics of cationic starches onto BKP, BCTMP and talc. Concentration of the unadsorbed cationic starch contained in the supernatant of the pulp or talc slurries was determined using a spectoscopy method and the adsorption isotherm of cationc starch was constructed. When the equilibrium concentration of the cationic starch was low, almost complete adsorption of the starch onto BKP and BCTMP was observed. This indicates that electrostatic attraction is the main driving force for the adsorption of cationc starches onto pulps. BCTMP adsorbed greater amount of cationic starches than BKP since it contained more anionc functional groups on its surface. The adsorption amount of the cationic starch increased as the cationicity of the starches decreased. Surface charge density of the pulp and starch adsorption increased as the pH of the pulp slurry increased. Adsorption amount of the cationic starch onto talc was lower than that onto the pulp due to its low charge density and hydrophobic surface property.

  • The spent liquor (BSL) obtained from alkaline sulfite-anthraquinone (AS-AQ) cooking of pine bark was applied as a deinking agent. In the ONP deinking system, although BSL removed the small size of ink particles (${\geq}$$12.5{\mu}m$), it did not improve the brightness of pulp. The brightness of pulp slightly improved when treated with BSL at 150~$180^{\circ}C$. However, the brightness of the pulp was lower than that of a commercial deinking agent (oleic acid). It seems that BSL treated with a high temperature still had a high dispersing ability on the ink particles. Intensive oxidations were introduced, and remarkable deinking effects were observed at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $160^{\circ}C$ and 2h. When BSL treated at 13kgf/$cm^2$ oxygen pressure, $170^{\circ}C$ and a time period of 30~90 min is added to the pulp, at 0.1% or lower, the deinking effect became higher than that of oleic acid. On the other hand, additional alkali treatments during the oxidation possibility as a deinking agent when oxidized. However, since the oxidized BSL still has a high dispersing ability and lower molecular weight, several modifications need to be done in the near future in order to be applied as a high quality deinking agent.
