  • Previous studies in various medical specialties have shown that fewer than 50% of abstracts presented at meetings are subsequently published, but only a few studies have been performed in pediatric dentistry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of publication of articles based on abstracts presented at the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (K.A.P.D) spring and fall Congress for 2001 to 2011. The abstracts for both oral and poster presentation were collected. A RISS search was then performed to identify the publication of full-length articles based on those titles of the abstracts. A total of 822 abstract presentations were done at the 22 meetings (543 as oral presentation, 279 as poster presentations). Of these, 42.2% (347) was subsequently published. The publication ratio for orally presented abstracts was 50.6% (275), poster presentations 25.8% (72). We suggest that presenters at these meetings should expand their abstracts into full manuscripts and seek to publish them in peer-reviewed journals for the benefit of the profession.

  • This paper proposes data mining models relevant to the serial publication periods and mobile gamification likelihood of webtoon contents which were either serialized or completed in platform. The size of the cartoon industry including webtoon takes merely 1% of the total entertainment contents industry in Korea. However, the significance of webtoon business is rapidly growing because its intellectual property can be easily used as an effective OSMU (One Source Multi-Use) vehicle for multiple types of contents such as movie, drama, game, and character-related merchandising. We suggested a set of data mining classifiers that are deemed suitable to provide prediction models for serial publication periods and mobile gamification likelihood for the sake of webtoon contents. As a result, the balanced accuracies are respectively recorded as 85.0% and 59.0%, from the two models.

  • In the history of elementary school mathematics education in Korea, the period led by the Government-General of Joseon during the Japanese colonial period cannot be omitted. As a way to grasp the real state of elementary school mathematics education at that time, there is a method of analyzing elementary school mathematics textbooks published by the Government-General of Joseon. However, the actual state of the publication of them was not sufficiently known. For this reason, this study surveys the actual state of the publication of those textbooks. To this end, real information on textbooks owned currently by various institutions and information on the publication of those textbooks in the official gazette and documents of the Government-General of Joseon were checked and organized.

  • In order to provide effective studies in accordance with the shifts in learning paradigms, an LD Publication engine, which is the former engine from the Learning Design (LD) based learning management system, was designed and implemented. The LD Publication engine analyzes the learning contents packages that have been prepared based on the LD and analyzes the constructions and meanings of the information files that describe learning activities in order to model them. The modeled data are fragmentized into effective and accessible forms from in the learning management systems and are then put into the database. LD based learning management systems provide learning effects and learner convenience designed to provide learners with a high performance learning platform. In addition, they will activate the development of content through the reproduction, reuse and sharing of the learning content, which will contribute to the expansion of infrastructures. These systems are also designed to enable linkages among learners' competences, preferences and portfolio, and thus the systems can be easily expanded.

  • This study is carried out to investigate the pubishing culture in Chonnam province during the latter half of Chosun Dynasty. The subjects, dates, and places of publication are analyzed from the books which have been found in the publication records and the catalog of woodblocks. Right after the war, Samryakjikhae and Sohakjipsul were published at Jukchunseodang, Bosung area. Anthologies were published dominantly through the whole period. Naju was the center of publication in 17 & the first half term 18 centuries and then moved to Jangwheung area. In this period, publication of genealogical records, biographies, anthologies, geography books had been increasing vastly. From the 19 century, most books were published by using the wooden type. The wooden type was used because the contents of books were for the limited number of publication. The most active publication happened at the end of 19th century. Significance of Confucian literature, collective anthologies, medical science, and confucious classics decreased in the latter half.

  • Background Since the initial Research and Reconstruction Forum (R&R Forum) in 2011, the R&R Forum, Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (KSAPS), and Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KSPRS) have held annual meetings. This study was conducted to provide updated information on the publication rate of presentations at those meetings. Methods Plastic surgery-related abstracts presented at the R&R Forum, KSAPS, and KSPRS between 2011 and 2015 were collected. The sessions were divided into free papers, posters, and e-presentations (or e-posters) for each annual meeting. Abstract publication status was confirmed through PubMed, Google Scholar, the KCI-Korean Journal Database, and the KM-base database. Results In total, 2,335 abstracts were presented in the free paper, poster, and e-presentation sessions. Of these, 622 (26.6%) were published. The overall publication rates were 240 of 684 abstracts (35.1%) presented at the R&R Forum, 56 of 216 abstracts (25.9%) presented at the KSAPS meetings, and 326 of 1,435 abstracts (22.7%) presented at the KSPRS meetings. In terms of specific annual meetings, the 2014 R&R Forum had the highest publication rate (39.9%), followed by the 2015 KSAPS (31.0%) and the 2015 KSPRS (28.8%). Conclusions Scientific researchers present diverse results at these professional meetings, with a focus on innovative surgical techniques and improved surgical outcomes. This is our second study on this topic. Despite its limitations, this study indirectly shows that the recognition of Korean plastic surgeons and the quality of the annual meetings of Korean societies of plastic surgery have risen to the global level.

  • Purpose - To improve and strengthen existing publication and research ethics, KODISA has identified and presented various cases which have violated publication and research ethics and principles in recent years. The editorial office of KODISA has been providing and continues to provide advice and feedback on publication ethics to researchers during peer review and editorial decision making process. Providing advice and feedback on publication ethics will ensure researchers to have an opportunity to correct their mistakes or make appropriate decisions and avoid any violations in research ethics. The purpose of this paper is to identify different cases of ethical violation in research and inform and educate researchers to avoid any violations in publication and research ethics. Furthermore, this article will demonstrate how KODISA journals identify and penalize ethical violations and strengthens its publication ethics and practices. Research design, data and methodology - This paper examines different types of ethical violation in publication and research ethics. The paper identifies and analyzes all ethical violations in research and combines them into five general categories. Those five general types of ethical violations are thoroughly examined and discussed. Results - Ethical violations of research occur in various forms at regular intervals; in other words, unethical researchers tend to commit different types of ethical violations repeatedly at same time. The five categories of ethical violation in research are as follows: (1) Arbitrary changes or additions in author(s) happen frequently in thesis/dissertation related publications. (2) Self plagiarism, submitting same work or mixture of previous works with or without using proper citations, also occurs frequently, but the most common type of plagiarism is changing the statistical results and using them to present as the results of the empirical analysis; (3) Translation plagiarism, another ethical violation in publication, is difficult to detect but occurs frequently; (4) Fabrication of data or statistical analysis also occurs frequently. KODISA requires authors to submit the results of the empirical analysis of the paper (the output of the statistical program) to prevent this type of ethical violation; (5) Mashup or aggregator plagiarism, submitting a mix of several different works with or without proper citations without alterations, is very difficult to detect, and KODISA journals consider this type of plagiarism as the worst ethical violation. Conclusions - There are some individual cases of ethical violation in research and publication that could not be included in the five categories presented throughout the paper. KODISA and its editorial office should continue to develop, revise, and strengthen their publication ethics, to learn and share different ways to detect any ethical violations in research and publication, to train and educate its editorial members and researchers, and to analyze and share different cases of ethical violations with the scholarly community.
