  • Data for this short-term longitudinal study were collected at 4 month intervals. Subjects were 423 children attending grades 4, 5, and 6 in Pusan and their mothers. Results showed that casual models of risk and protective factors differed by sex and types of behavior problems. For boys, mother's psychological problems, children's self-control, and their self-esteem directly influenced externalizing behavior problems while mother's psychological problems and children's perceived control parenting indirectly influenced externalizing behavior problems by way of self-esteem. Mother's psychological problems and boys' self-esteem directly influenced internalizing behavior problems. Girls' externalizing behavior problems were influenced directly mother's psychological problems, children's negative emotionality, and peer acceptance. Mother's psychological problems and girls' perceived support from teachers influenced internalizing behavior problems directly. Based on these results the authors proposed an intervention program against children's behavior problems.

  • This study examined the relationships between children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control, and children's behavior problems(depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression). In order to expand the study on the relationships, special attention was given to the possible moderator effects of children's sex and peer acceptance on the relationships. The subjects were 272 6th graders residing in Seoul. It was found that children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control was significantly related with the levels of children's depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression. The results indicated that mothers' higher psychological control was related to higher levels of children's depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression. No significant sex difference was found in the relationship between children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control and children's behavior problems although all of the correlations between mothers' psychological control and each of the behavior problem variables were somewhat higher among boys than among girls. Children's perceptions of peer acceptance were found to be a significant moderator of the relationship between mothers' psychological control and children's depression, and of the relationship between mothers' psychological control and children's aggression. These findings indicated that peer acceptance could function as a protecting factor for children who perceive their mothers to be psychologically controlling.

  • This study analyzed the effect of family meals on the psychological problems of children. We performed focus group interviews (FGI) on the basic characteristics of family meals, and chose several scales (such as Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), self-esteem, and a daily hassles questionnaire), to measure the psychological variables. We collected data from 442 dyads (mother-child) and used 440 from dyads. In our results, the frequency of family meals affected the psychological problems of children, especially aggression and emotional instability. The atmosphere during meals also affected depression/anxiety, concentration difficulties, emotional instability, self-esteem, peer relationships, and sociality. There were significant correlations between meal atmosphere, family bonding, maternal personality, and psychological problems of children. We performed covariation analysis to examine and control the influence of family bonding and maternal personality; despite controlling for these variables, family meals still influenced children's psychological problems. We conclude that the family meal is a significant variable that impacts the emotional and behavioral problems of children and stress the importance of frequent family meals.

  • This study investigates the effects of children's social relationships and psychological characteristics on their behavior problems. Behavior problems comprise violations of norms, bullying, and deviant behavior in the cyberspace. A data set of 2949 Korean children in their 4th grade is analyzed to yield three main results. First, variables such as contact with delinquent friends, aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, gender, and depression have significant effects on violations of norms. Children who have more delinquent friends, higher level of aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, or depression report more violations of norms. Second, delinquent friends, stress of peer relationship, aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, gender, parents' violent attitudes toward children, and negative self-image are turned out to be important variables predicting bullying. Children with more delinquent friends, higher level of stress, higher level of aggressiveness, or lower self-image are more likely to experience bullying. Children who perceive their parents to be violent show more bullying experience. Third, each of aggressiveness, delinquent friends, stress of appearance complex, gender, relationship with teacher, and family income has significant effect on deviant behavior in cyberspace. Children with higher level of aggressiveness, more delinquent friends, stress of appearance complex, or negative impression of teacher are more likely to deviate in cyberspace. Children from higher income families report more deviant behavior in cyberspace. Boys show more experiences in every category of behavior problems than girls.
