The correlation between Smartphone Addiction and Psychiatric Symptoms in College Students (일 대학생들의 스마트폰 중독과 정신건강과의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the relationship between smartphone addiction and psychiatric symptoms and the difference in severity of psychiatric symptoms by the degree of smart phone addiction in order to raise awareness of mental health problem. related to smartphone addiction in college students. Methods: Two hundreds and thirteen university student survey data was collected from December 5th to 9th of 2011 in South Korea using smartphone Addiction Scale, and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revision that was translated with korean for the psychiatric symptoms. Results: Respondents were classified as upper addicted (25.3%) and lower addicted group (28.1%). Addicted scores were positively correlated with psychiatric symptom scores. Obsessive-compulsive score was the most highly correlated with addiction scores. There were significant different in psychiatric symptom scores by the groups. Upper groups was 1.76 times higher than lower in total psychiatric scores. The addicted group used smartphone significantly longer per day and more satisfied with than lower addicted group. Conclusion: Although the smartphone was first introduced not so long ago, the addiction rate is exponentially increasing in students. The results proved that there is an inevitable correlation between the smartphone addiction and the severity of psychiatric symptoms.

The Structural Analysis of Variables Related to Posttraumatic Growth among Psychiatric Nurses (정신간호사의 외상 후 성장과 관련 변인 간의 구조 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explain a structural model of posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses based on existing models and a literature review and verify its effectiveness. Methods: Data were collected from psychiatric nurses in one special city, four metropolitan cities, and three regional cities from February to March 2016. Exogenous variables included hardiness and distress perception, while endogenous variables included self-disclosure, social support, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic growth. Data from 489 psychiatric nurses were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and AMOS 20.0. Results: The modified model was a good fit for the data. Tests on significance of the pathways of the modified model showed that nine of the 14 paths were supported, and the explanatory power of posttraumatic growth by included variables in the model was 69.2%. For posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses, deliberate rumination had a direct effect as the variable that had the largest influence. Indirect effects were found in the order of hardiness, social support, and distress perception. Self-disclosure showed both direct and indirect effects. Conclusion: A strategy to improve deliberate rumination is necessary when seeking to improve posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses. Enhancing psychiatric nurses' hardiness before trauma would enable them to actively express negative emotions after trauma, allowing them to receive more social support. This would improve deliberate rumination and consequently help promote psychological growth among psychiatric nurses who have experienced trauma.

Effects of Psychiatric Nursing Practicum using Simulated Patients on Self-Directed Learning Readiness, Learning Self-Efficacy, Satisfaction of Learning (모의환자를 활용한 정신간호 시뮬레이션 교육이 자기주도적 학습, 학습 자기효능감, 교육만족도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the psychiatric nursing simulation practicum, which was developed for the therapeutic relationship forming and communication, psychiatric nursing assessment training utilizing simulated patients, on self-directed learning, learning self-efficacy and learning satisfaction. As a one group pre-test and post-test design, this test conducted 8 hours of intervention on 119 senior nursing students as study subjects. As a result, self-directed learning and learning self-efficacy were seen to be significantly improved after the program compared to before the program, and these variables displayed a moderate-level static correlation with learning satisfaction. These results can be deemed representative of the fact that, concerning psychiatric nursing practicum, a simulation teaching using simulated patients is effective. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving field-centered psychiatric nursing practicum and the quality of psychiatric clinical work.

Validation of the Edmonson Psychiatric Fall Risk Assessment Tool for Psychiatric Inpatients: A Retrospective Study (정신건강의학과 입원 환자를 위한 낙상 위험 사정도구 (Edmonson Psychiatric Fall Risk Assessment Tool)의 타당도 평가: 후향적 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the Edmonson psychiatric fall risk assessment tool (EPFRAT) for psychiatric inpatients. Methods: Data from retrospective study were collected from 670 adult inpatients in two departments of mental health medicine of a tertiary general hospital by reviewing their electronic medical records. There were 41 patients who experienced falls and 629 patients who did not experience falls during the period from January to December 2019. Data were analyzed by sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and a receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) for validity assessment using the IBM SPSS/WIN 26.0 program. Results: Factors affecting falls were the participant's age, guardian's residence, high-risk determination at the time of admission, and comorbidity. At the 85 points where the point of sum of the sensitivity and specificity was largest, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of EPFRAT were 92.7%, 79.7%, 22.9%, and 99.4%, respectively. The area under the ROC to assess the overall validity of the tool was .92 (95% CI 0.89~0.94). Conclusion: The EPFRAT was proved to be valid and reasonable for predicting falls in psychiatric inpatients. Based on the results of this study, it could be used for the assessment of high-risk patients for falls in psychiatric units.

A Study on the Effects of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practicum Using Storytelling

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the empathy, communication efficacy, and communication skills of nursing students through a psychiatric nursing practice program using storytelling by allowing the students to immerse in the narratives and identify themselves with the main characters with mental illness. This study is a single group pretest-posttest design that applied psychological nursing practice using storytelling to 46 nursing students from a local university in Korea and evaluated its effectiveness. Data analysis was performed by a paired t-test to compare the effects of the participants' empathy, communication self-efficacy, and therapeutic communication ability using SPSS 21.0 program. The results showed that psychiatric nursing practice using storytelling had an effect on the empathy (t=3.565, p=.001) and communication self-efficacy (t=2.320, p=.025) of nursing students. Based on these results, psychiatric and mental health clinical practice curriculums should be developed to improve nursing students' understanding of mental disorders and develop their communication ability with patients.

A Comparative Study on Stress and Coping Method of Psychiatric Patients and Non-Psychiatric Peoples (정신질환자와 비정신질환자의 스트레스 및 그 적응방법에 대한 비교연구)

  • This study on stress and coping method of psychiatric patients and non-psychiatric peoples was applied to people who was divided into two groups from Sep. 25 to Oct. 3, 1978, One is hospitalized patients in psychiatric wards of four hospitals in Seoul. The other is inhibitants in two Dongs of Seoul, This study purposed to the identification of the difference of stressful events’numbers, the severity of stress, and difference of coping methods between psychiatric patients and non-psychiatric peoples. Two instruments are used in this study. The first one to measure stress, is Holmes & Rahe (1967)'s SRRQ (Social Readjustment Rating Questionnaire), which is amended, added or omitted through preliminary test, so that it consists of 48 items. The second one is for evaluating coping method on stress. It consists of 34 items amended through preliminary test after consideration of related literature review and survey on the basis of J.M.Bell (1977)'s“ 18-item-Questionnaire”. The materials were analyzed by S.P.S.S. Program. The results of analysis are as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in stressful event's numbers between psychiatric patients and non-psychiatric peoples (P > 0.5). 2. Psychiatric patients had higher severity of stress than non-psychiatric peoples (P < 0.5). 3. Psychiatric patients took more short-term coping methods than non-psychiatric peoples (p < 0.5).

Effects of Group Tai Chi Exercise Prograam on Body Mass Index(BMI), Positive and Negative Psychiatric Symptoms in Patient with Schizophrenia (타이치 운동프로그램이 정신분열병 환자의 신체질량지수와 양성 및 음성 정신 증상에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of Tai Chi exercise program on BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms in patient with schizophrenia. Methods: The participants were patient with schizophrenia in S psychiatric hospital in D city. Twenty five patients were assigned to experimental group, and 26 patients were assigned to control group. Data were collected from May 9, to July 8, 2011. The Tai Chi exercise program was conducted with a duration of 60 minutes, 2 times a week for 8 weeks (a total 8 times). Measures were BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test and t-test with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. Result: The experimental group received Tai Chi exercise program had a significant changes in BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that Tai Chi exercise program is an effective intervention program to improve the BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms of patients with schizophrenia.

Effects of Communication Competency, Self-efficacy for group work, and Learning Transfer Motivation of Nursing Students in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice Education based on Blended Learning (블렌디드 러닝(Blended learning)을 기반으로 한 정신간호학 실습교육이 간호대학생의 의사소통 능력, 협력적 자기 효능감 및 학습전이동기에 미치는 효과)

  • The study developed a psychiatric and mental health nursing practice program based on blended learning as nursing students' field practice in psychiatric and mental nursing practice was limited due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. This is a study to evaluate the effect on communication competency, self-efficacy for group work, and learning transfer motivation through a psychiatric and mental health nursing practice program based on blended learning. From October 18, 2021 to December 11, 2021, 64 nursing students participated in the study using a structured Google questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired t-test using the SPSS 25.0 program. As a result of the study, based on blended learning, the subjects' communication competency, self-efficacy for group work, and learning transfer motivation were significantly increased after compared to before psychiatric and mental health nursing practice education. Through the results of this study, it was possible to confirm the effect of the psychiatric and mental health nursing practice program based on blended learning.

A Study of Cognitive Function and Psychiatric Disturbance in Normal Adults (정상인의 연식기능과 신경증경향에 관한 연구)

  • In an attempt to take Comprehensive nursing care the author tested cognitive function and psychiatric disturbance produced by normal adults. Mini-mental state and simple reaction time were tested and general health questionnaire was conducted two hundred subjects. The data were analyzed statistically and the results follow: 1. The score of mini-mental state of the elderly group was less significant than that of the younger group in the tests of cognitive dysfunction. The score of MMS of the female group, the illiteracy group less significant than that of other groups in the test of cogntive dysfunction. 2. Reaction time of the elderly group was slower than that of the younger group. Reaction time of the female group was slower than that of the male group. Reaction time of the illiteracy group was the slowest & the unskilled group was slower than that of the other groups. 3. As a result of the results of psychiatric disturbance the score of general health questionnaire of the elderly group was significantly higher than that of the younger group in the tests of psychiatric disturbance. The test of psychiatric disturbance sho-wed that the score of general health questionnaire of the female group was significantly higher than that of the male group in the tests of psychiatric disturbance. The illiteracy group was the highest in the psychiatric disturbance among other groups and the unskilled group was significantly higher than the other groups. 4. Education had higher correlation to mini-men-tat state, while age negative correlation in comparison with other variables age had higher correlation to reaction time, while education had negative correlation in comparison with other variables. Sex had low correlation in these tests.
