  • Bandwidth enhancement technique for a proximity coupled patch antenna is investigated. The bandwidth and radiation characteristics of a proximity coupled patch antenna with an integrated impedance matching network printed on substrates with various dielectric constants and thicknesses are compared to those of a proximity coupled patch antenna without an impedance matching network. The bandwidth of a proximity coupled patch antenna with an integrated impedance matching network is greatly increased than that of a proximity coupled patch antenna without an impedance matching network without the degradation of radiation characteristics.

  • Effect of substrate thickness, perforation position and size on the bandwidth and radiation characteristics of a proximity coupled perforated microstrip patch antenna (PCPPA) with $2{\times}2$ square perforations inside a patch is investigated. As the thicknesses of antenna substrate and feed substrate increase, the bandwidth of a PCPPA increases without the degradation of radiation characteristics. As the position of a perforation moves toward the edge of a patch along the length direction, the bandwidth of a PCPPA increases without the degradation of radiation characteristics, while the effect of changing the position of a perforation along the width direction on the bandwidth and radiation characteristics of a PCPPA is negligible. As the perforation size is decreased, the bandwidth of a PCPPA is increased and the radiation characteristics of a PCPPA are enhanced.

  • In this paper, a layout-based CMOS RF model for RFIC's including the capacitance effect, the skin effect, and the proximity effect between metal lines on the Si surface is proposed for the first time for accurately predicting the RF behavior of CMOS devices. With these RF effects, the RF equivalent circuit model based on the layout of the multi-finger gate transistor is presented. The capacitances between metal lines on the Si surface are modeled with the layout. And the skin effect is modeled to the equivalent ladder circuit of metal line. The proximity effect is modeled by adding the mutual inductance between cross-coupled inductances in the ladder circuit representation. Compared to the BSIM 3v3 and other models, the proposed RF model shows better agreements with the measured data and shows well the frequency dependent behavior of devices in GHz ranges.

  • Proximity-coupled open-end microstrip interconnections in bilevel planar structures are investigated through three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain(3D-FDTD) method. Three types of EMC (electromagnetically coupled) microstriplines are considered, collinear lines, transverse lines and modified EMC structure. From the analyzed results, it is found that these EMC interconnections have the coupling coefficient enough to interconnect lines in bilevel structures over a broad-band. The computed results of the modified EMC structure was compared with measurement from physical model and the computed results of via hole interconnection.

  • This paper proposes a design of small controlled reception pattern antenna (CRPA) arrays using circular microstrip loops with frequency-insensitive characteristics. The proposed array consists of seven identical upper and lower circular loops that are electromagnetically coupled, which results in a frequency-insensitive behavior. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed feeding mechanism, the proposed array is fabricated, and its antenna characteristics are measured in a full-anechoic chamber. The operating principle of the proposed feeding mechanism is then interpreted using an equivalent circuit model, and the effectiveness of the circular loop shape is demonstrated by calculating near electromagnetic fields in proximity to the radiator. The results confirm that the proposed feeding mechanism is suitable to have frequency-insensitive behavior and induces strong electric and magnetic field strengths for higher radiation gain in extremely small antenna arrays.

  • A popular modern architectural form for tall buildings is two (or more) towers which are structurally linked through such features as a shared podium or sky-bridges. The fundamental features of the wind loading and the structural links of such buildings can be studied by measuring load components on the individual unlinked towers along with their correlations. This paper describes application of dual high frequency force balance (DHFFB) in a wind tunnel study of the base wind loading exerted on generic tall twin buildings in close proximity. Light models of two identical generic tall buildings of square plan were mounted on DHFFB and the base wind loading exerted on the buildings was simultaneously acquired. The effects of the relative positions of the buildings on the correlations and coherences involving loading components on each building and on the two buildings were investigated. For some relative positions, the effects of the building proximity on the wind loading were significant and the loading was markedly different from that exerted on single buildings. In addition, the correlations between the loadings on the two buildings were high. These effects have potential to significantly impact, for example, the modally-coupled resonant responses of the buildings to the aerodynamic excitations. The presented results were not meant to be recommended for direct application in wind resistant design of tall twin buildings. They were intended to show that wind loading on tall buildings in close proximity is significantly different from that on single buildings and that it can be conveniently mapped using DHFFB.

  • The paper describes a study of the effects of structural coupling on the wind-induced response of twin tall buildings connected by a skybridge. Development of a dual high-frequency force balance used in wind tunnel investigation and background information on the methodology employed in analysis are presented. Comparisons of the wind-induced building response (rooftop acceleration) of structurally coupled and uncoupled twin buildings are provided and the influence of structural coupling is assessed. It is found that the adverse aerodynamic interference effects caused by close proximity of the buildings can be significantly reduced by the coupling. Neglecting of such interactions may lead to excessively conservative estimates of the wind-induced response of the buildings. The presented findings suggest that structural coupling should be included in wind-resistant design of twin tall buildings.
