BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dietary pattern and its association with cardio-cerebrovascular disease have not been studied in Baoji city by now. This study was aimed to identify the dietary patterns among Chinese adults in Baoji, and explore the association between these dietary patterns and cardio-cerebrovascular disease. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 4,968 participants were included in this study at 12 counties. With multistage stratified random sampling and semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire, the prevalence of cardio-cerebrovascular disease and dietary intake were investigated in 2013. We used factor analysis to establish dietary patterns. RESULTS: A total of 4,968 participants over 15 years old were included in this study. Five dietary patterns were identified in Baoji: protein, balanced, beans, prudent, and traditional patterns. The protein dietary pattern mainly included animal and plant proteins and was negatively associated with hypertension as well as stroke. The balanced pattern included carbohydrates, protein, and fat and was negatively associated with hypertension as well as stroke. The beans pattern was mainly beans and beans products and was negatively associated with hypertension. The prudent pattern only included staple foods and pickled vegetables and was positively associated with hypertension as well as coronary heart disease. The traditional pattern was representative of local Baoji traditional recipes and was positively associated with hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: The protein, balanced, and beans dietary patterns showed many protective effects on cardio-cerebrovascular disease. Based on these results, Baoji city residents should be encouraged to choose protein, balanced, and beans dietary patterns and abandon prudent and traditional patterns to prevent incidence of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

This study was made to determine alleviating effects of vitamin C(Vt C) on the gramoxone toxicity in rats with respect to the growth gain, feed effeciency ratio, total lipid contents, lipid peroxication and protein patterns in rat liver. Growth gain, feed efficiency ratio and liver weight in the gramoxone group were decreased significantly as compared with the control group, while those values obtained in the gramoxone-Vt C group were increased as compared with the gramoxone group. Lipid contents and TBA value of rat liver of the gramoxone group were increased significantly as compared with the control group. However, those values of the gramoxone+Vt C group were decreased as compared with the gramoxone group. No significant differences were observed in the liver protein patterns between the gramoxone and the control group. The contents of liver protein were decreased significantly in the gramoxone group fed for 2 weeks as compared with the control group. The change of the liver protein patterns, such as the decrease of high molecular weight protein and the increase of low molecular weight protein were observed in the gramoxone+Vt C group.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the electrophoretic patterns of soluble proteins from ginseng roots and to compare the protein patterns from Korean ginseng and American quinquefolium. The size difference was found in the major protein bands of a molecular weight of about 27,000 between Korean ginseng and American quinquefolium. The protein band of a molecular weight of 22,000 showed a quantitative difference in its amount. The major 27 K proteins appeared to form a complex heterodimer of 66,000 and to have internal bisulfide bonds, from band shifting studies under non-denaturing conditions. Three peaks appeared when the protein extract from root homogenates was purified using gel filtration and DEAE ion exchange chromatography. The examination of physiological activity and further purification of these fractions are underway.
In order to know the similarity of the electrophoretic protein patterns, distributional aspects of the frequency in each protein band, differences of protein patterns between female and male, and the number of the total protein bands of each variety in the haemolymph of the silkworm pupae according to their geographical origin, the silkworm varieties, and both the sexes, variable electrophoretic protein patterns were observed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, using the silkworm strains which have been reared in the sericultural experiment station. 1. The total number of electrophoretic protein bands classified were twenty-eight, and nearly fourteen bands were shown by each variety on an average. 2. According to their geographical origin, the mean values of the similarity were 20.0%, 28.3% and 14.3% in Japanese, Chinese and European respectively, and the highest similarity was observed between Chinese varieties. 3. The similarity of 129 varieties were tested and it was 22.5%, 23.5% in female and male respectively. 4. The electrophoretic protein patterns in 129 varieties were tested and variation was found in 109 patterns in female and 112 in male. 5. The frequency of the each specified protein band in female and male having variation in protein bands in each variety was found averagely 6.6%. 6. The distribution frequency of the classified 28 protein bands in both the sexes within each geographical origin was variable from 0% to 100%. 7. Among the classified 28 protein bands, HP 11 protein band was found common in all the varieties tested. 8. HP 3 and HP 4 protein bands in female showed high density in electropherograms than in male.
The growth. freezing resistance and electrophoretic protein patterns of carrot callus cultures were investigated following treatment with NaCl for various' intervals at 20$^{\circ}C$. Following 7 day exposure to 250 mM NaCl. freezing tolerance increased, which was measured by 2.3.5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) assay and fresh weight was reduced compared to control cells. Changes of electrophoretic patterns of total and boiling stable proteins were investigated using one or two dimensional gel system. Several proteins with molecular weight of 43 and 21 kDa increased by NaCl treatment. The most prominent change was detected in 21 kDa protein. The steady state level of this protein increased in NaCl treated cells, but decreased in control cells. Twenty one kDa protein was detected only in the NaCl treated cell when boiling stable protein was analyzed. The isoelectric point of 21 kDa protein was identified as 5.7. The timing of increase of 21 kDa protein was correlated to freezing resistance which implied the role of this protein in the induction of freezing resistance of the cell.
Protein patterns at various stages of pre-and post-fertilization in Drosophila melanogaster were analyzed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Ovaries at various times after hatching, embryos, larvae and pupae were collected and used for protein analysis. The protein patterns were found to vary qualitatively and quantitatively during oogenesis as well as during embryogenesis and metamorphosis. Yolk proteins, which were found to be synthesized in fat body and transferred into the oocytes, appeared in three bands in the gel in the early stages, but these proteins seemded to be converged into a single band in the late stage of oogenesis. The protein patterns in the post fertilization stages seemed to be abruptly changed at two different stages; between embryonic and larval stages and between the second and third instar stages. The pattern in the pupal stages was not very much different from that of the third instar.
Periodontal ligament(PDL) cells have been known as playing an important roles in periodontal regeneration and gingival fibroblasts are also important to periodontal regeneration by forming connective tissue attachment. There were rare studies about the gene expression patterns of PDL cells and gingival fibroblasts, therefore in this study, we tried cDNA microarray-based gene expression monitoring to explain the functional differences of PDL cells and gingival fibroblasts in vivo and to confirm the characteristics of PDL cells. Total RNA were extracted from PDL cells and gingival fibroblasts of same person and same passages, and mRNA were isolated from the total RNA using Oligotex mRNA midi kit(Qiagen) and then fluorescent cDNA probe were prepared. And microarray hybridization were performed. The gene expression patterns of PDL cells and gingival fibroblasts were quite different. About 400 genes were expressed more highly in the PDL cells than gingival fibroblasts and about 300 genes were more highly expressed in the gingival fibroblasts than PDL cells. Compared growth factor- and growth factor receptor-related gene expression patterns of PDL cells with gingival fibroblasts, IGF-2, IGF-2 associated protein, nerve growth factor, placental bone morphogenic protein, neuron-specific growth- associated protein, FGF receptor, EGF receptor-related gene and PDGF receptor were more highly expressed in the PDL cells than gingival fibroblasts. The results of collagen gene expression patterns showed that collagen type I, type III, type VI and type VII were more highly expressed in the PDL cells than gingival fibroblasts, and in the gingival fibroblasts collagen type V, XII were more highly expressed than PDL cells. The results of osteoblast-related gene expression patterns showed that osteoblast specific cysteine-rich protein were more highly expressed in the PDL cells than gingival fibroblasts. The results of cytoskeletal proteins gene expression patterns showed that a-smooth muscle actin, actin binding protein, smooth muscle myosin heavy chain homolog and myosin light chain were more highly expressed in the PDL cells than gingival fibrobalsts, and ${\beta}-actin$, actin-capping protein(${\beta}$ subunit), actin- related protein Arp3(ARP) and myosin class I(myh-1c) were more highly expressed in the gingival fibroblasts than PDL cells. Osteoprotegerin/osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor(OPG/OCIF) was more highly expressed in the PDL cells than gingival fibroblasts. According to the results of this study, PDL cells and gingival fibroblasts were quite different gene expression patterns though they are the fibroblast which have similar shape. Therefore PDL cells & gingival fibroblasts are heterogeneous populations which represent distinct characteristics. If more studies about genes that were differently expressed in each PDL cells & gingival fibroblasts would be performed in the future, it would be expected that the characteristics of PDL cells would be more clear.

Since a protein displays its specific functions when disorder region of protein sequence transits to order region with provoking a biological reaction, the separation of disorder region and order region from the sequence data is urgently necessary for predicting three dimensional structure and characteristics of the protein. To classify the disorder and order region efficiently, this paper proposes a classification/prediction method using sequence data while acquiring a non-biased result on a specific characteristics of protein and improving the classification speed. The emerging patterns based EPs-TFP methods utilizes only the essential emerging pattern in which the redundant emerging patterns are removed. This classification method finds the sequence patterns of disorder region, such sequence patterns are frequently shown in disorder region but relatively not frequently in the order region. We expand P-tree and T-tree conceptualized TFP method into a classification/prediction method in order to improve the performance of the proposed algorithm. We used Disprot 4.9 and CASP 7 data to evaluate EPs-TFP technique, the results of order/disorder classification show sensitivity 73.6, specificity 69.51 and accuracy 74.2.
Pattern finding is one of the important tasks in a protein or DNA sequence analysis. Alignment is the widely used technique for finding patterns in sequence analysis. BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) is one of the most popularly used tools in bio-informatics to explore available DNA or protein sequence databases. BLAST may generate a huge output for a large sequence data that contains various sequence patterns. However, BLAST does not provide a tool to summarize and analyze the patterns or matched alignments in the BLAST output file. BLAST lacks of general and robust parsing tools to extract the essential information out from its output. This paper presents a pattern summary system which is a powerful and comprehensive tool for discovering pattern structures in huge amount of sequence data in the BLAST. The pattern summary system can identify clusters of patterns, extract the cluster pattern sequences from the subject database of BLAST, and display the clusters graphically to show the distribution of clusters in the subject database.

Determining the binding sites in protein-nucleic acid complexes is essential to the complete understanding of protein-nucleic acid interactions and to the development of new drugs. We have developed a set of algorithms for analyzing protein-nucleic acid interactions and for predicting potential binding sites in protein-nucleic acid complexes. The algorithms were used to analyze the hydrogen-bonding interactions in protein-RNA and protein-DNA complexes. The analysis was done both at the atomic and residue level, and discovered several interesting interaction patterns and differences between the two types of nucleic acids. The interaction patterns were used for predicting potential binding sites in new protein-RNA complexes.
