  • Production of cyclodextrin (CD) by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) isolated from alkalophilic Bacillus sp. was carried out to determine optimal reaction conditions. The maximum initial rate of CD production from amylose was obtained at dextrose equivalent 10.5. The CD production yield showed inverse proportionality to DE values over the range from 0.5 to 37.7. Even though the deactivation constant of CGTase at $60^{\circ}C$ was higher than those at lower temperatures, the production rate and yield at $60^{\circ}C$ were still higher. These results suggest thermal stabilization of CGTase by binding with starch.

  • Block copolymers of PC-b-PMMA (polycarbonate-b-polymethylmethacrylate) and PC -b-SAN (polycarbonate-b-(styrene-c-acrylonitrile)), were examined as compatibilizers for blonds of PC with SAN copolymer. The average diameter of the dispersed particles was measured with an image analyser, and the interfacial properties of the blonds were analysed with an imbedded fiber retraction (IFR) technique. The average diameter of dispersed particles and interfacial tension of the PC/SAN blends reached a minimum value when the SAN copolymer contained about 24 wt% AN. Interfacial tension and particle size were further reduced by adding compatibilizer to the PC/SAN blends. PC-b-PMMA was more effective than PC-b-SAN as a compatibilizer in reducing the average diameter of the dispersed particles and interfacial tension of PC/SAN blend. A direct proportionality between the particle diameter and interfacial tension was also observed. The interfacial properties of the PC/SAN blends were optimized by adding a block copolymer and using an SAN copolymer that had minimum interaction energy with PC.

  • MoSi$_2$heating elements were fabricated using MoSi$_2$, powder prepared by SHS. Their apparent density, electrical resistivity, bending strength and victors hardness were measured as a function of sintering temperature, time and the amount of ceramic additives. The additives were A1$_2$O$_3$, SiO$_2$and bentonite which were added as a plastisizer. The electrical resistivity of MoSi$_2$decreased with the increase in the apparent density as expected. It decreased when the additives were added and the increase was the largest for the case of SiO$_2$. The bending strength and hardness decreased when the grain size becomes larger which is opposite to the expectation from the Hall-Petch type relation. Instead, they showed inverse proportionality with the volume fraction of pores probably in an exponential manner. The strength and hardness also decreased with the additives.

  • The concepts of ratio, rate, and proportion are used in everyday life and are also applied to many disciplines such as mathematics and science. Proportional reasoning is known as one of the pivotal ideas in school mathematics because it links elementary ideas to deeper concepts of mathematics and science. However, previous research has shown that it is difficult for students to recognize the proportionality in contextualized situations. The purpose of this study is to understand how the mathematical concept in the middle school mathematics curriculum is connected with ratio, rate, and proportion and to investigate the characteristics of proportional reasoning through analyzing the concept including ratio, rate, and proportion on the middle school mathematics curriculum. This study also examines mathematical concepts (direct proportion, slope, and similarity) presented in a middle school textbook by exploring diverse interpretations among ratio, rate, and proportion and by comparing findings from literature on proportional reasoning. Our textbook analysis indicated that mechanical formal were emphasized in problems connected with ratio, rate, and proportion. Also, there were limited contextualizations of problems and tasks in the textbook so that it might not be enough to develop students' proportional reasoning.

  • From the geometric parameter study, an optimal ejector design procedure of pressure recovery system for chemical lasers was acquired. For given primary flow reservoir conditions, an up-scaled ejector was designed and manufactured. In the performance test, secondary mass flow rate of 100g/s air was entrained satisfying the design secondary pressure, $40{\sim}50torr$. Performance validation of a supersonic ejector system along with an investigation of effects of supersonic diffuser was conducted. Placement of the diffuser at the secondary inlet further reduced diffuser upstream pressure to 7torr. Lastly, the duplicate of apparatus (air 500g/s secondary mass flow rate each) was built and connected in parallel to assess proportionality behavior on a system to handle larger mass flow rate. Test and comparison of the parallel unit demonstrated the secondary mass flow rate was proportional to the number of individual units that were brought together maintaining the lasing pressure.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) at which micelles start to form from a surfactant solution is usually measured in terms of conventional concentration units. However, the thermodynamic potentials are expressed in terms of mole fraction $X_{CMC}$ and $X_{CMC}$ cannot be directly measured experimentally. The Gibbs free energy, ${\Delta}G^{\ast}_{mic}$, in particular is related to $X_{CMC}$ through ${\Delta}G^{\ast}_{mic}$ = $RTlnX_{CMC}$. When it comes to CMC, the molar CMC, $C_{CMC}$, differs only by the proportionality $C^{-1}_{w}$ with $C_{w}$ being the molarity of water. Hence, $C_{CMC}$ is found to be a proper representation of CMC. However, in calculation of ${\Delta}G^{\ast}_{mic}$ and other thermodynamic potentials from the CMC, $X_{CMC}$ or $C_{CMC}/C_{w}$ should be used.

  • Growth behavior of two different types of grains, faceted and rounded, in a liquid matrix has been studied in the (75WC-25TiCN)-30Co system. Powder samples were sintered above the eutectic temperature for various times under a carbon saturated condition. (Ti,W)(C,N) grains with a rounded shape and WC grains with a faceted shape coexisted in the same Co based liquid. With increasing sintering time, the average size of (Ti.W)(C,N) grains increased continuously and very large WC grains appeared. The growth of rounded (Ti,W)(C,N) grains followed a cubic law, r^3-r^3_0$=kt, where r is the average size of the grains, $r_0$ the initial average size, k the proportionality constant and t the sintering time. indicating a diffusion-controlled growth. On the other hand, the growth of the faceted WC grains resulted in a bimodal grain size distribution, showing an abnormal grain growth. These observations show that the growth behavior of different types of grains is governed by their shape, faceted or rounded, even in the same liquid matrix.

  • This study suggests the tangent modulus $E_t$ associated with partially yielded section of steel member under axially compressed. The provisions for column strength does not provide a information about failure mode of structural system. So, designers can not evaluate that a failure comes from member buckling or material yielding. The material of the axially compressed column under inelastic behavior reaches yielding point before the axial force renders the column bent. If axial members yields not by buckling effect but gradually yielding effect of material, the design code should accept related tangent modulus Et which is based on gradual yielding effect of material. This study provides the new effective tangent modulus $E_t$ derived in the case that residual stress is 30 percent and 50 percent of yielding stress respectively. The study considers idealized I section of steel which ignores web and general I section of steel with web respectively and makes conclude that tangent modulus $E_t$ with idealized I section of steel is rational.

  • In this work, the scintillation properties of CsI:Na crystal were investigated as radiation detection sensor. This scintillation material was grown by a 2-zone vertical Bridgman method. Under X-ray excitation the crystal shows a broad emission band between 280 nm and 690 nm wavelength range, peaking at 413 nm. Energy resolution for $^{137}Cs$ 662 keV $\gamma$-rays of the crystal was measured to be 6.9 %(FWHM). At room temperature, the crystal exhibits three exponential decay time components. The fast and major component of scintillation time profile of the crystal emission decays with a 457 ns time constant. Absolute light yield of the crystal was estimated to be 53,000 ph/MeV using LAAPD. The sample crystal shows proportionality of 30 % in the measured energy range from 31 to 1,333 keV. And the $\alpha/\beta$ ratio of the crystal was 0.14.

  • The focus of this paper is given to the investigation of mechanical properties of steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete after being exposed to fire. The research programme covered tests of two sets of beams: specimens subjected to fire and specimens not subjected to fire. The fire test was conducted in an environment mirroring one of possible real fire situations where concrete surface for an extended period of time is directly exposed to flames. Micro-cracking of concrete surface after tests was digitally catalogued. Compressive strength was tested on cube specimens. Flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength were tested according to RILEM specifications. Damages of specimens caused by spalling were assessed on a volumetric basis. A comparison of results of both sets of specimens was performed. Significant differences of all tested properties between two sets of specimens were noted and analysed. It was proved that the limit of proportionality method should not be used for testing fire damaged beams. Flexural characteristics of steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete were significantly influenced by fire. The influence of fire on properties of steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete was discussed.
