For the purpose of supplying the information to improve the acceptability of soy paste as the condi-ment, we investigated the changes of free sugar, volatile and nonvolatile organic acids during improved soypaste fermentation. The results were as follows; Free sugars were increased in order of glc> xyl>ara>gal. Acetic, formic, butyric, and propionic acid in volatile organic acids were detected. And total contents were increased until 60 day. In 180 day, contents of volatile organic acids were high in order of acetic>propionic> butyric> formic. The contents of succinic and glutaric acid in nonvolatile organic acids were predominent and increased in order of succinic>glutaric>lactic. Tartaric>citric>malic acid were produced in the next order.
The flash point is one of the most important physical properties used to determine the fire hazard of flammable liquid mixture and defined as the lowest temperature at which a liquid produces sufficient vapor to form a combustible mixture with air. The main purpose of this paper is to measure and predict the flash point of binary flammable miscible mixtures. The flash points for n-hexanol+n-butyric acid and n-butanol+propionic acid, were measured by using Seta-flash closed cup method. The experimentally derived data were correlated with the binary interaction parameters of the van Laar and NRTL equations through the optimization method. The flash points estimated by these correlations were compared with those calculated by the method based on Raoult's law. The optimization method were found to be better than the method based on the Raoult's law.

Oxygen consumption by Clonorchis sinensis (C.S.) was observed in a medium of valuable pH of KRP, lack of certain electrolytes of KRP and of glucose, acetic acid or propionic acid was added to KRP. The results were as follows. 1. In a different solutions, KRP with or without $0.4%-glucose$, $0.9%-saline$ solution, the variation of oxygen consumption by C.S. was not significant. 2. Oxygen consumption by C.S. was inhibited by the solution of KCI, $CaCl_2$, or $MgSO_4$ in a 0.9% solution of saline. 3. Under the acidity, oxygen consumption was enhanced but under the alkality, it was inhibited. 4. Oxygen consumption by C.S. was inhibited by acetic acid or propionic acid in KRP solution. 5. C.S. keeping in KRP solution for a long duration, oxygen cosumption was reduced in the course of time.
Characteristics of organic acid degradation by isolated yeast strain was investigated. Optimum initial pH was 5. Increase in cell mass was proportional to the decrease in organic acid degradation. Also no accumulation of byproduct was observed during degradation. Acetic acid degraded fast, followed by butyric acid and propionic acid in order. No significant substrate inhibition was observed up to 12 g/L of acetic acid 7 g/L of propionic acid, respectively. However, inhibition of butyric acid was significant above 4 g/L. Cell mass yield was 0.2-0.4 g cell/g acids and decreased at high decreased at high organic acid concentration. 95% of organic acid (7.5 g/L), corresponding to 13,000 ppm, was degraded in 30-40 hours.
This study was conducted to evaluate the microbial communities in coupled system of a microbial electrolysis cell and an anaerobic digestion. Glucose, butyric acid, propionic acid and acetic acid were used as substrates. The maximum methane production and methane production rate of propionic acid respectively were $327.9{\pm}6.7mL\;CH_4/g\;COD$ and $28.3{\pm}3.1mL\;CH_4/g\;COD{\cdot}d$, which were higher than others. Microbial communities' analyses indicated that acetoclastic methangens were predominant in all systems. But the proportion of hydrogenotrophic methanogens was higher in the system using propionic acid as a substrate when compared to others. In coupled system of a microbial electrolysis cell and anaerobic digestion, the methane production was higher as the distribution of hydrogen, which was generated by substrate degradation, and proportion of hydrogenotrophic methanogens was higher.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of molasses and propionic acid on the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of total mixed ration (TMR) silages prepared with whole-plant corn in Tibet. TMR (354 g/kg DM) was ensiled with four different treatments: no additive (control), molasses (M), propionic acid (P), and molasses+propionic acid (PM), in laboratory silos (250 mL) and fermented for 45 d. Silos were opened and silages were subjected to an aerobic stability test for 12 days, in which chemical and microbiological parameters of TMR silages were measured to determined the aerobic deterioration. After 45 d of ensiling, the four TMR silages were of good quality with low pH value and ammonia/total N (AN), and high lactic acid (LA) content and V-scores. M silage showed the highest (p<0.05) LA content and higher dry matter (DM) recovery than the control and P silages. P silage had lower (p<0.05) LA content than the control silage. During aerobic exposure, lactic acid contents decreased gradually in the control and M silages, while that of P and PM silages increased, and the peak values were observed after 9 d. M silage had similar yeast counts with the control silage (> $10^5$ cfu/g FM), however, it appeared to be more stable as indicated by a delayed pH value increase. P and PM silages showed fewer yeasts (< $10^5$ cfu/g FM) (p<0.05) and were more stable than the control and M silages during aerobic exposure. It was concluded that M application increased LA content and improved aerobic stability of TMR silage prepared with whole-plant corn in Tibet. P application inhibited lactic acid production during ensiling, and apparently preserved available sugars which stimulated large increases in lactic acid during aerobic exposure stage, which resulted in greater aerobic stability of TMR silage.
Two popular activity coefficient models, Wilson and NRTL equations have been used to correlate the published flash point data on the n-propanol + propionic acid and n-butanol + propionic acid systems through the optimization method. The results of these correlation were compared with the results calculated by Raoult's law. The optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. The optimization method based on the Wilson equation described the published data more effectively than was the case when the optimization method was based upon the NRTL equation.

The yield, mp, IR, $^1H-NMR,\; and^{13}C$- NMR spectra of the products 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d, 10a, l0b, l0c are summarized in footnote. The biological studies of these compounds are in progress and will be reported in future.

To test their roles in rumination behavior, metabolites (acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and glucose) were intravenously infused into the jugular vein of goats during fasting. The heads of four female goats tested were locked in a stanchion of cages in an experimental room. Ruminating behaviors with regard to number of ruminations, ruminating time, number of remastications and remasticating time were significantly decreased by acetic acid infusion (p < 0.05), and tended to be depressed more on values in butyric acid infusion or glucose infusion than those in pre-infusions, but propionic acid infusion decreased a little. Those data suggest that rumination receptors sensitive to VFAs and glucose are more likely to be situated in the area, where they would respond too blood levels.
The flash point is one of the most significant combustion properties of flammable liquids in industrial processes when evaluation process safety, In this paper, Cleveland open cup tester is used to measure the flash points for the two binary systems (n-propanol + formic acid and acetic acid + propionic acid). The measured flash points were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law and the optimization method using van Laar and Wilson equations. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.
