재현된 반류의 영향을 받는 프로펠러 후류 내 불안정한 날개끝 보오텍스 구조에 대한 정량적 가시화 (Visualization of Unstable Vortical Structure in a Propeller Wake Affected by Simulated Hull Wake)

  • The characteristics of complicated propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated by using a two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. As the propeller is significantly affected by the hull wake in a real marine vessel, the measurements of propeller wake under the hull wake would be certainly necessary for more reliable validation and the prediction of numerical simulation with wake modeling. Velocity field measurements have been conducted in a medium-size cavitation tunnel with a hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the boundary layer of ship's hull produces the different loading distribution on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The difference of the propeller wake behaviors caused by the hull wake is discussed in terms of axial velocity, vorticity and turbulence kinetic energy distribution in the present study.

  • The free surface influenced the wake behind a rotating propeller and its effects were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel with the variation of water depth. Instantaneous velocity fields were measured using two-frame PIV technique and ensemble-averaged to study the phase-averaged flow structure in the wake region. For an isolated propeller, the flow behind the propeller is affected only by the propeller rotation speed, the leading on the blades and the proximity of the propeller to the free surface. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the potential wake and the viscous wake developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between the tip vortices and the slipstream causes the oscillating trajectory of tip vortices. The presence of the free surface greatly affected the wake structure, especially for propeller immersion depth of 0.6D. At small immersion depths, the free surface modified the tip and trailing vortices and the slipstream flow structure downstream of X/D = 0.3 in the propeller wake.

  • The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.

For an isolated propeller, the flow behind the propeller is influenced by the propeller rotation and the free surface. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the potential wake and the viscous wake are formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between the tip vortices and the slipstream causes the oscillating trajectory of tip vortices. Tip vortices are generated periodically and the slipstream contracts in the near-wake region. The presence of free surface affects the wake structure largely, when the water depth is less than 0.6D. The free surface modifies the vortex structure, especially the tip and trailing vortices and flow structure in slipstreams of the propeller wake behind X/D = 0.3.

  • The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory

Investigation on the wake evolution of contra-rotating propeller using RANS computation and SPIV measurement

  • The wake characteristics of Contra-Rotating Propeller (CRP) were investigated using numerical simulation and flow measurement. The numerical simulation was carried out with a commercial CFD code based on a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations solver, and the flow measurement was performed with Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system. The simulation results were validated through the comparison with the experiment results measured around the leading edge of rudder to investigate the effect of propeller operation under the conditions without propeller, with forward propeller alone, and with both forward and aft propellers. The evolution of CRP wake was analyzed through velocity and vorticity contours on three transverse planes and one longitudinal plane based on CFD results. The trajectories of propeller tip vortex core in the cases with and without aft propeller were also compared, and larger wake contraction with CRP was confirmed.

Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases and ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the near-wake region from the trailing edge to one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were generated periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate have large values at the locations of tip and trailing vortices. As the flow goes downstream, the turbulence intensity, the strength of tip vortices and the magnitude of out-of-plane velocity component at trailing vortices are decreased due to viscous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction.

For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.

  • A stereo-PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique is used to investigate the vortical structure of the wake behind a rotating propeller in the present study. A four bladed propeller is tested in a cavitaion tunnel without any wake screen. Hundreds of instantaneous velocity fields are phase-averaged to reveal the three dimensional spatial evolution of the flow behind the propeller. The results of conventional 2-D PIV are also compared with those of the stereo-PIV to understand the vortical structure of propeller wake deeply. The variations of radial and axial velocities in the 2-D PIV results seem to be affected by the out-of-plane motion. generating a little perspective error in the in-plane velocity components of the slipstream. The strong out-of-plane motion around the hub vortex also causes the perspective error to vary the axial velocity component a little at the near wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component had the maximum value of about 0.3U0 in the tip vortices and continued its magnitude in the wake region.

  • A numerical model for the analysis of the marine propeller including wake roll-up is presented. In this study, we apply a higher-order panel method, which is based on a B-spine representation for both generations of the propeller geometry and hydrodynamic solutions, to predict the flow around the propeller blades. The present model is validated by comparison of the experimental measurements. The results show that the present method is able to predict the improved pressure distributions on the blade surface, especially very close to propeller tip regions, where other panel methods without the wake roll-up model give erroneous results.
