Failure Modeling of Bridge Components Subjected to Blast Loading Part I: Strain Rate-Dependent Damage Model for Concrete

  • A dynamic constitutive damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) structures and formulations of blast loading for contact or near-contact charges are considered and adapted from literatures. The model and the formulations are applied to the input parameters needed in commercial finite element method (FEM) codes which is validated by the laboratory blast tests of RC slabs from literature. The results indicate that the dynamic constitutive damage model based on the damage mechanics and the blast loading formulations work well. The framework on the dynamic constitutive damage model and the blast loading equations can therefore be used for the simulation of failure of bridge components in engineering applications.

  • Progressive failure analysis of steel composite double T-beam is performed to investigate the mechanical effects of steel composite fabricated in the webs of double-T beam to replace concrete placing forms. The analysis is based on nonlinear finite element scheme considering material nonlinearities of concrete, reinforcing bar and PS steel. Four-parameter strength envelope defines the hardening and softening phenomena of concrete with consideration of the various levels of confining pressures. Rankine maximum strength criterion defines the elasto-plasticity of PS steel and reinforcing bar, and Von Mises $J_2$ failure criterion for steel plate which wraps the concrete webs of double T-beam. A 6m long two-span steel composite double T-beam is analyzed and compared with the experimental results.

복합재 적층판재의 비선형 수치해석 및 실험 (Nonlinear Numerical Analysis and Experiment of Composite Laminated Plates)

  • A finite element program using degenerated shell element was developed to solve the geometric, material and combined nonlinear behaviors of composite laminated plates. The total Lagrangian method was implemented for geometric nonlinear analysis. The material nonlinear behavior was analyzed by considering the matrix degradation due to the progressive failure in the matrix and matrix-fiber interface after initial failure. The results of the geometric nonlinear analyses showed good agreements with the other exact and numerical solutions. The results of the combined nonlinear analyses considered both geometric and material nonlinear behaviors were compared to the experiments in which a concentrated force was applied to the center of the square laminated plate with clamped four edges.

Discrete crack analysis for concrete structures using the hybrid-type penalty method

  • The hybrid-type penalty method (HPM) is suitable for representing failure phenomena occurring during the transition from continua to discontinua in materials such as concrete. Initiation and propagation of dominant cracks and branching of cracks can easily be modeled as a discrete crack. The HPM represents a discrete crack by eliminating the penalty that represents the separation of the elements at the intersection boundary. This treatment is easy because no change in the degrees of freedom for the discrete crack is necessary. In addition, it is important to evaluate the correct deformation of the continua before the crack formation is initiated. To achieve this, we implemented a constitutive model of concrete for the HPM. In this paper, we explain the implemented constitutive model and describe the simulation of an anchor bolt pullout test using the HPM demonstrating its capability for evaluating progressive failure.

Analyses of centrifuge modelling for artificially sensitive clay slopes

  • Slope stability of sensitive clayey soils is particularly important when subjected to strength loss and deformation. Except for progressive failure, for most sensitive and insensitive slopes, it is important to review the feasibility of conventional analysis methods based on peak strength since peak strength governs slope stability before yielding. In this study, as a part of efforts to understand the behavior of sensitive clay slopes, a total of 12 centrifuge tests were performed for artificially sensitive and insensitive clay slopes using San Francisco Bay Mud (PI = 50) and Yolo Loam (PI = 10). In terms of slope stability, the results were analyzed using the updated instability factor ($N_I$). $N_I$ using equivalent unit weight to cause a failure is in reasonable agreement shown in the Taylor's chart ($N_I$ ~ 5.5). In terms of dynamic deformation, it is shown that two-way sliding is a more accurate approach than conventional one-way sliding. Two-way sliding may relate to diffused shear surfaces. The outcome of this study is contributable to analyzing stability and deformation of steep sensitive clay slopes.

Incompatible deformation and damage evolution of mixed strata specimens containing a circular hole

  • Analysing the incompatible deformation and damage evolution around the tunnels in mixed strata is significant for evaluating the tunnel stability, as well as the interaction between the support system and the surrounding rock mass. To investigate this issue, confined compression tests were conducted on upper-soft and lower-hard strata specimens containing a circular hole using a rock testing system, the physical mechanical properties were then investigated. Then, the incompatible deformation and failure modes of the specimens were analysed based on the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM) and Acoustic Emission (AE) data. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted to explore the damage evolution of the mixed strata. The results indicate that at low inclination angles, the deformation and v-shaped notches inside the hole are controlled by the structure plane. Progressive spalling failure occurs at the sidewalls along the structure plane in soft rock. But the transmission of the loading force between the soft rock and hard rock are different in local. At high inclination angles, v-shaped notches are approximately perpendicular to the structure plane, and the soft and hard rock bear common loads. Incompatible deformation between the soft rock and hard rock controls the failure process. At inclination angles of 0°, 30° and 90°, incompatible deformations are closely related to rock damage. At 60°, incompatible deformations and rock damage are discordant due that the soft rock and hard rock alternately bears the major loads during the failure process. The failure trend and modes of the numerical results agree very well with those observed in the experimental results. As the inclination angles increase, the proportion of the shear or tensile damage exhibits a nonlinear increase or decrease, suggesting that the inclination angle of mixed strata may promote shear damage and restrain tensile damage.

태안 Hebei Spirit 유출 유류 제거작업 후 발생한 호흡부전 1예 (A Case of Respiratory Failure after Clean-up Work of the Hebei Spirit Crude Oil Spill in Taean)

  • On 7 December 2007, the Hebei Spirit ran aground near Taean and released approximately 10,900 tons of oil into the sea. Crude oil on the coastal areas and fumes in the air increased the number of health problems among the local population. We report a case of respiratory failure after the oil spill clean-up work. A 66-year-old female was admitted to hospital with cough, sputum, and dyspnea of 1-month duration after the oil spill clean-up. She was diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and treated with empirical antibiotics. However, she had progressive respiratory failure without identification of the pathogen. Respiratory failure due to chronic inhalation of hydrocarbons from the crude oil spill clean-up was suspected. After mechanical ventilation care, she recovered from respiratory failure and was discharged. We report a case of severe respiratory toxic effects after an oil spill clean-up. We concluded that long-term hydrocarbon inhalation during the oil spill clean-up may have induced respiratory failure in this case.

터널형상의 Trapdoor 모형실험을 통한 지반 거동에 관한 연구 (Ground Behavior around Tunnel Using Tunnel-shaped Trapdoor Model Test)

  • 본 연구에서는 실제 터널 단면의 형상을 갖는 Trapdoor시험과 수치 해석을 수행하여 주변지반의 거동, 이완하중의 분포 및 점진적인 파괴 현상에 대하여 분석하였다. 지반하중은 Trapdoor의 하강에 따라 급격히 감소 후에 다시 크게 증가하여 일정한 이완하중에 도달하여 아칭효과를 확인 할 수 있었으며, 느슨 모래의 경우가 조밀 모래 보다 상대적으로 큰 값을 나타내었다. 전단대의 형성은 터널 어깨부에서 발생하여 터널 측벽에서 $63^{\circ}$(느슨) 및 $69^{\circ}$(조밀) 방향으로 시작하여 완만한 곡선을 이루며 지표를 향하여 진행하는 형상을 나타내었다. 터널 상부에서의 전단대의 폭원은 1.83b~1.92b(b는 터널폭)로서 기존 제안식으로 구한 값과 유사한 범위를 보였으나, 전단대의 높이는 대심도의 경우 터널고의 1.5~2.0배 정도로서 기존의 제안 값(약 3.0배) 보다 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났다.

일방향 탄소섬유강화 플라스틱 복합재 적층구조의 충격 후 압축강도 시험 및 유한요소해석 (Test and Finite Element Analysis on Compression after Impact Strength for Laminated Composite Structures of Unidirectional CFRP)

  • 본 연구에서는 구조재로 널리 사용되는 일방향 탄소섬유강화 플라스틱 복합재 적층구조의 충격 후 압축강도에 대한 시험 및 유한요소해석을 수행하였다. 연구에서 사용된 복합재 적층판은 적층방법에 따라 2종류로 구분되며, 각 적층판에는 4가지의 충격에너지를 적용하였다. 충격 및 압축강도 시험은 미국재료시험협회 규격을 준수하여 수행하였으며 비파괴검사 방법인 C-Scan을 통해 충격손상을 분석하고 압축시험을 통해 충격 후 압축강도를 산출하였다. 충격 및 압축강도 해석은 복합재 섬유/기지/단층/적층판 수준의 손상과 파손을 점진적으로 예측할 수 있는 점진적 파손해석을 사용하였다. 접촉하중, 처짐, 충격손상, 압축강도 등에 대한 시험 및 해석결과의 비교로부터 해석결과의 타당성을 확인하였다.

요소 절단법을 사용한 섬유강화 복합재료의 대규모 통계적 체적 요소 모델 개발 (Development of the Big-size Statistical Volume Elements (BSVEs) Model for Fiber Reinforced Composite Based on the Mesh Cutting Technique)

  • 본 논문에서는 섬유강화복합재의 멀티스케일 해석을 위해 필요한 대규모/소규모 통계적 체적요소 모델을 개발하였다. 미시영역모델의 크기효과를 최소화하기 위해서 섬유를 최대한 포함한 거대모델을 구성하였다. 이를 위해 국부 영역의 요소 절단법을 이용하여 전체 유한요소 크기에 상관없이 신속한 격자 섬유/기지의 모델링이 가능한 요소생성기를 구성하였다. 이를 통해 대규모 통계 체적 모델을 도출하여 체적모델의 크기에 따른 국부하중 공유의 차이를 고찰하고, 섬유방향의 연속체손상역학모델을 BSVEs 모델 해석으로부터 도출 하였다. BSVEs 모델을 보편적인 RVE모델과 비교 검증하였다.
