  • A new methodology, the crack-spallation model, has been developed to analyze gas-solid reactions dominated by crack growth inside of the solid reactant and spallation phenomena. The new model physically represents three processes of the reaction progress: (1) diffusion of gas reactant through pores; (2) growth of product particle in pores; and (3) crack and spallation of solid reactant. The validation of this method has been conducted by comparison of results obtained in an experiment for oxidation of $UO_2$ and the shrinking core model. The reaction progress evaluated by the crack-spallation model shows better agreement with the experimental data than that evaluated by the shrinking core model. To understand the trigger point during the reaction progress, a detailed analysis has been conducted. A parametric study also has been performed to determine mass diffusivities of the gas reactant and volume increase constants of the product particles. This method can be appropriately applied to the gas-solid reaction based on the crack and spallation phenomena such as the voloxidation process.

  • This paper presents an econometric model for measuring basic research capacity index(BRCI) of each OECD countries and analyses the gap in terms of time lag measured and forecasted in connection with factor analysis and BRCI progress function. Based on the analysis, gross domestic expenditure on R&D(GERD), total R&D personnel, higher education expenditure on R&D(HERD) and number of science and technical papers based on SCI are more effective than other factors to BRCI. Also, BRCI progress function shows that 29 years is needed for Korea to catch up the level of German's BRCI of year 1998. But, it's impossible for Korea to catch up US and Japan. Therefore, with restricted scientific resources, Korea's own strategy for strengthening basic research capacity is going to be more important in 21st century.

  • Hydration is the main reason for the growth of the material properties. A exact parameter to control the chemical and physical process is not the time, but the degree of hydration. Therefore, it is reasonable that development all material properties should be formulated in terms of degree of hydration. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration is based on combination of reaction rate functions. The effect of moisture conditions as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. This effect is subdivided into two contributions: water shortage and water distribution. The former is associated with the effect of on the progress of hydration. The water needed for progress of hydration do not exist and there is not enough space for the reaction products to form. The latter is associated with the effect of free capillary water distribution in the pore system. Physically absorption layer does not contribute to progress of hydration and only free water is available for further hydration.

  • Progress in Si crystal and wafer technologies is discussed on single crystal growth, wafer fabrication, epitaxial growth, gettering, 300 mm and SOI. As for bulk crystal growth, the mechanism of grown-in defects (voids) formation, the succes of grown-in defect free crystal growth technology and nitrogen doped crystal are shown. New wafer fabrication technologies such as both-side mirror polishing and etchingless process have been developed. The epitaxial growth of SiGe/Si heterostructure for high speed bipolar device is treated. Gettering technology under low temperature process such as RTP is important, and also it is shown that IG effect for Ni could be predicted using computer simulation of precipitate density and size. The development of 300 mm wafer and SOI has made progress steadily.

  • Since Dr. Lipke announces earned schedule management(ESM) in 2002, it has been used in project management to make up for the insufficient schedule management function of earned value management technique. However, it is difficult to accurately forecast the schedule of delayed defense research and development(R&D) projects with the ESM technique. Therefore, this paper proposes a new schedule forecasting method considering the progress of delayed work in ESM technique. This concept can also be adopted to the traditional project progress management (PPM) technique. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed concept through several defense R&D projects and prove that it is possible to supplement the schedule forecasting of the ESM and PPM technique.

  • This study uses a hybrid estimation tool for effective cost data management of building projects, and develops a realistic cost estimation model. The method makes use of newly available information as the project progresses, and project cost and percentage progress are analyzed and used as inputs for the developed system. For model development, case-based reasoning (CBR) is proposed, as it enables complex nonlinear mapping. This study also investigates analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for weight generation and applies them to a real project case. Real case studies are used to demonstrate and validate the benefits of the proposed approach. By using this method, an evaluation of actual project performance can be developed that appropriately considers the natural variability of construction costs.

  • As the importance of maintenance of reinforced concrete structure recently has emerged, the attention of durability of structure has been increasing. There are many studies about durability decline especially due to the carbonation. In order to study carbonation progress after surface repair of carbonated concrete, each carbonation penetration velocity from different repair materials of concrete structure is compared through the experiment of carbonation accelerating CO2 concentration to 100%. As carbonation infiltration progress is predicted through this study, the counterplan of service life evaluation will be prepared on selection of repair materials of concrete structure.

  • International transfer of technology is not a simple mechanical progress obtaining technology from overseas, but a sysmetic progress for advancing ability of domestic research development through technology, men of talent, advanced management and its experience. In this progress, it is a important yardstick measuring a country's standard of technology & productivity and self-reliance of industrialization whether countries have introduced some technologies or settled them somehow or not. Through these views, this paper is dealing in major features on each stage in connection with economic system's change, strategy of economic development and industrialization of China regarding transfer technology in China extended during five decades after war.

  • We fabricated thin film superconducting fault current limiters based on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ thin films and investigated the distribution of quench progress in the limiters. The limiters were tested with simulated fault currents. Quench progress depended significantly on the position in the limiter with respect to electrodes as well as the fault current magnitude. The heat transfer from limiter meander lines to electrodes explains these results.s.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyze the structure of efficiency of R&D input variables and the attributes of patent information as output of R&D activities in the major manufacturing industries (electric & electronics, machinery, chemical, textile) from the mid-1970s to the late-1990s by the development of "mapping technique". To attain this objective we first have examined the attribute of time-lag which depends on the absolute, and the cumulative values between input and output. And on the basis of this result, we have made an analysis on the impact to extract the main variables affecting patent by industries. Moreover, according to time trend of the impact variables, we have analyzed the structure of R&D efficiency, and of technological progress which will be changed with time by patent information. It has been aimed at constructing technological progress patterns in the Korea industry.
