The wind profilers operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration observe in a low mode for intensive observation of the low levels and a high mode for intensive observation of the high levels. The LAP-3000 wind profiler installed in Bukgangneung and Changwon is characterized by the same sampling frequency of the low mode and the high mode, allowing to compare winds observed in both modes at the same altitude. As a result of analyzing the wind speed of the two points for one year in 2020, the correlation between the two modes was up to 0.2 lower than the correlation with radiosonde. The T-test for the wind speed of the two modes showed a particularly significant difference in October, where the temperature and specific humidity fluctuate frequently. The difference in the development of the atmospheric boundary layer affects the accuracy of the wind speed depending on the observation mode.

In this paper, the phased-array transceiver (TRX) channel amplitude and phase calibration method for a radar wind profiler (RWP) based on the 256 active phased array is discussed. Without the additional module, the TX and RX calibration paths were secured using couplers and switches in the TRX front ends and the TRX switching duplexers, and the amplitude and phase of the 256 TRX were calibrated using a gain and phase detector. The beam widths and side lobes of five beams (vertical, east, west, south, and north) of the calibrated 256 active phased array antenna were confirmed by a near-field which agreed well with the simulation results. The proposed calibration method can be easily applied to a system based on an active phased array operated in an outdoor environment.

In Japan, high-speed ground transportation service using linear motors at speeds of 500 km/h is scheduled to begin in 2027. To accommodate 5G services in trains, a subcarrier spacing frequency of 30 kHz will be used instead of the typical 15 kHz subcarrier spacing to mitigate Doppler effects in such high-speed transport. Furthermore, to increase the cell size of the 5G mobile system, multiple base station antennas will transmit identical downlink (DL) signals to form an expanded cell size along the train rails. In this situation, the forward and backward antenna signals are Doppler-shifted in opposite directions, respectively, so the receiver in the train may suffer from estimating the exact Channel Transfer Function (CTF) for demodulation. In a previously published paper, we proposed a channel estimator based on Delay and Doppler Profiler (DDP) in a 5G SISO (Single Input Single Output) environment and successfully implemented it in a signal processing simulation system. In this paper, we extend it to 2×2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) with spatial multiplexing environment and confirm that the delay and DDP based channel estimator is also effective in 2×2 MIMO environment. Its simulation performance is compared with that of a conventional time-domain linear interpolation estimator. The simulation results show that in a 2×2 MIMO environment, the conventional channel estimator can barely achieve QPSK modulation at speeds below 100 km/h and has poor CNR performance versus SISO. The performance degradation of CNR against DDP SISO is only 6dB to 7dB. And even under severe channel conditions such as 500km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment, the error rate can be reduced by combining the error with LDPC to reduce the error rate and improve the performance in 2×2 MIMO. QPSK modulation scheme in 2×2 MIMO can be used under severe channel conditions such as 500 km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment.

An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication system has drawn wide attention for its high transmission rate and high spectrum efficiency in not only radio but also Underwater Acoustic (UWA) applications. Because of the narrow sub-carrier spacing of OFDM, orthogonality between sub-carriers is easily affected by Doppler effect caused by the movement of transmitter or receiver. Previously, Doppler compensation signal processing algorithm for Desired propagation path was proposed. However, other Doppler shifts caused by delayed Undesired signal arriving from different directions cannot be perfectly compensated. Then Receiver Bit Error Rate (BER) is degraded by Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) caused in the case of Multi-path Doppler channel. To mitigate the ICI effect, a modified Delay and Doppler Profiler (mDDP), which estimates not only attenuation, relative delay and Doppler shift but also sampling clock shift of each multi-path component, is proposed. Based on the outputs of mDDP, an ICI canceling multi-tap equalizer is also proposed. Computer simulated performances of one-tap equalizer with the conventional Time domain linear interpolated Channel Transfer Function (CTF) estimator, multi-tap equalizer based on mDDP are compared. According to the simulation results, BER improvement has been observed. Especially, in the condition of 16QAM modulation, transmitting vessel speed of 6m/s, two-path multipath channel with direct path and ocean surface reflection path; more than one order of magnitude BER reduction has been observed at CNR=30dB.

Wind profiler and wind lidar produce a vertical profile of winds in high spatiotemporal resolution in the atmospheric boundary layer. The wind lidar makes the wind vector using DBS (Doppler Beam Swinging) and VAD (Velocity Azimuth Display) methods. The DBS method has the advantage of obtaining a wind profile with a fast scan time. On the other hand, there is a restriction that requires at least two beams including vertical beam, which causes a decrease in the data acquisition rate. The VAD method was improved to produce more wind vector of the wind profiler as well as the wind lidar, which generally uses 5 beams. Fourier series was estimated with the radial velocity by the DBS method and wind vector was determined by setting the azimuth interval and applying the radial velocity by the Fourier series to the VAD method. The wind vectors were retrieved at the altitude where the wind was not calculated by the DBS method, and the results of the two methods were consistent.
Surface topography plays a decisive role in determining the performance of several precision components. In particular, the surface roughness of semiconductor devices affects the precision of the circuit. In this regard, the surface topography of a given surface needs to be appropriately assessed. Typically, the average roughness is used as one of the main indicators of surface finish quality because it is influenced by both dynamic and static parameters. Owing to the increasing demand for such accurate and reliable surface measurement systems, studies are continuously being conducted to understand the parameters of surface roughness and measure the average roughness with high reliability. However, the differences in the measurement methods of surface roughness are not clearly understood. Hence, in this study, the surface roughness of the back of a silicon wafer was measured using both contact and noncontact methods. Subsequently, a comparative analysis was conducted according to various surface roughness parameters to identify the differences in surface roughness depending on the measurement method. When using a 3D laser confocal microscope, even smaller surface asperities can be measured compared with the use of a 3D profiler. The results are expected to improve the understanding of the surface roughness characteristics of precision components and be used as a useful guideline for selecting the measurement method for surface topography assessment.
Offender profiling, as a crime investigation technique, aims to respond more effectively to violent crimes. However, attitude that police investigators hold toward offender profiling is quite skeptical, which prevents offender profiling from making effective and practical contributions to police investigations. Therefore, the present study explored development strategies of offender profiling by examining perceptions of offender profiling among 156 Korean National Police University students. Furthermore, a total of 166 students from other universities also participated as a control group. As a result, participants showed positive attitude toward offender profiling, in terms of its necessity, effectiveness, and reliability. However, they believed that Korean police agencies are not making the good use of offender profiling and that profilers are not necessarily taking the lead in solving cases. In terms of the profiler education, the majority of the students who showed interest in becoming a profiler did not know what to learn and how to prepare for becoming one. Finally, limitations of the present study were discussed and suggestions for further research were made.

Ground echo is radar return from stationary targets such as buildings and trees. Wind vectors from the wind profile radar in Gangneung are affected by ground echoes due to the complex mountainous terrain located to the west and the south. These ground echoes make a spurious peak close to the direct current (DC) line signal in Doppler spectra. Wind vectors polluted by ground clutters were determined from spectra of oblique beams. After eliminated the terrain echoes, the accuracy of wind vector compared with radiosonde was improved about 68.4% and its relative coefficient was increased from 0.58 to 0.97.

CuSn thin films were deposited by rf magnetron co-sputtering method with pure Cu and Sn metal targets with a variety of rf powers. CuSn thin films were studied with a surface profiler (alpha step), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurement. The thickness of CuSn thin films was fixed at $200{\pm}10nm$ and deposition rate was calculated by the measured with a surface profiler. From the survey XPS spectra, the characteristic peaks of Cu and Sn were observed. Therefore, CuSn thin films were successfully synthesized on the Si (100) substrate. The oxidation state and chemical environment of Cu and Sn were investigated with the binding energy regions of Cu 2p XPS spectra, Sn 3d XPS spectra, and Cu LMM Auger spectra. Change of the crystallinity of the films was observed with XRD spectra. Using contact angle measurement, surface free energy (SFE) and wettability of the CuSn thin films were studied with distilled water (DW) and ethylene glycol (EG).
A large amount of computation is required to generate a hologram using a computer. In order to accelerate the computation, many methods of acceleration by parallel programming using GPGPU(General Purpose computing on Graphic Process Unit) have been researched. In this paper, we propose a method of reducing the bottleneck caused by hologram pixel based parallel processing and using the shareable variables. We also propose how to optimize using Visual Profiler supported by nVidia's CUDA to make threads work optimally. The experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the calculation time by up to 40% compared with the existing research.
