  • The degree of doctors' autonomy is decided by the relations between the profession and the state. The exclusive right required by doctors is based on knowledge, but it is most often decided by the relations between the profession and the state. The critical factor affecting the status of the medical profession is the span of its control on medical related areas. Therefore, the status of doctors depends on the degree of institutionalization and the span of their control. The status of Korean Oriental Medicine doctors has been largely affected by the governments medical policies. The dramatic change of the status of Korean Oriental Medicine in modern Korea dearly shows the effects of medical policy on the status of a medical system. Under the plural medical system every medical group lobbies for more favorable medical policies. Korean Oriental Medicine doctors have secured an enhanced status in government and expanded the range of medical insurance coverage. Also, they have accomplished the standardization of knowledge in their efforts to expand it. These achievements are the most important aspects of the professionalization of Korean Oriental Medicine. Therefore, we can conclude that the conflicts between Korean Oriental Medicine doctors and government representatives have had significantly positive effects on the professionalization of Korean Oriental Medicine.

  • The Korean Librarian Association was established in 1990 for the professionalization of the librarian in Korea. So far there has been no research with the association as a main subject in spite of its importance in the history of Korean Libraries. In this study, we attempt to investigate the meaning and the importance of the association from the view point of professionalism. As a professional association, the Korean Librarian Association tried to get professional autonomy from the governing bodies and the market to reach higher level in professionalization. But the activities of the association has been radically declined since 1997, which would be affected by the character of librarianship that is mainly based not on individual characteristics but on organizational characteristics.

  • Almost all professions organize into their own occupational organizations, Through these organizations, professionals try to awaken to and pursue their own group interests. Moreover, the members of a profession endeavor to develop an occupational ideology through their organization. Based on this occupational ideology, these individuals try to expand the span of their control on the occupation's related areas. Finally, they work to build an organizational structure that can be easily reproduced so as to facilitate the creation of new branches of the organization in the future. Efforts toward strengthening the organization and securing its status have greatly affected the professionalization of Korean oriental medicine. • This article is concerned with exploring labour market transformation in newspaper industry and thereby looking into skill formation and professionalization of journalists. In Korea, according to previous research, newspaper journalist labour market had been characterized by a low inter-firm mobility of workers and patterns of long-term employment and firm-based skill training. However, over the past few years, as new product strategies of newspaper firms has changed due to management crisis employers pull back from the responsibilities of investment on skill training and securing job stability for journalists. However, in spite of overall weakened firm-based skill formation systems within the market, there still seems to be long way to build alternative systems of skill developments for them. As a result, it will be argued that, in the absence of manifest labor market institutions such as apprenticeships or skill certification system, which are assumed to traditionally certify workers' professionalization, occupational identity and professionality of newspaper journalist labour market will be weakened. Labor market data from interviews with journalists in the newspaper industry are used in order to test this hypothesis.
