Establishment of Measurement Standards for Productivity Assessment in Construction Project (건설 프로젝트 생산성 평가를 위한 측정 기준 수립)

  • In general construction project planning ratio of manpower and quantity of outputs produced, such as the construction estimate standard, is used as the criterion for labor productivity. This method is highly effective in construction projects with repetitive work, however, there is a limit to apply in large-scale projects with high complexity. This is because the influence of non-work time caused by various work interruption factors that act complexly on the productivity of the project is greater than the average labor productivity derived from the performance data of the project. Therefore, this study proposes a productivity measurement method that can evaluate the characteristics of construction works and the cause of non-working time. To this end, first, detailed work processes and their non-work factors for each work type are defined, and the Adv-FMR technique is developed for quantitatively measuring them. Next, based on the concept of obtainable productivity, methods for comparative productivity analysis by work type, evaluating non-work factors, and deriving productivity improvement methods are proposed. Finally, a case study is conducted to validate that the analysis results based on Adv-FMR data can support the decision-making of construction managers on productivity management.

Performance and Productivity of Researchers in the Area of Science and Technology : A Review (과학기술연구자(科學技術硏究者)의 업무수행도(業務遂行度) 및 생산성(生産性)에 관한 종합적(綜合的) 고찰(考察))

  • This review focuses on the individual performance and productivity of researchers in the area of science and technology. The researchers in the paper are classified into individual inventors without organizational affiliation and researchers in the organization, which are distinguished by cosmopolitanic professionals and local institutionalists. The productivity of researchers is in general measured by different indicators or measurement scales such as: i) subjective evaluation of overall research performance, (ii) the number of published papers, reports and books, iii) the quality of research output (e.g. citation frequency), iv) originality of research ouput (e,g, patents), v) multiple measurement scales, etc. According to the literature based on empirical study, the productivity of individual reseachers is positively related to the degree of freedom, communication, diversity, dedication, and motivation and negatively related to the degree of similarity, and satisfaction. However, other factors such as creativity, age, supervisory behavior and group characteristics have shown irregular direction of correlation.

  • A datawarehouse which extracts and saves the massive analysis data is used for marketing and decision support of business. However, the datawarehouse has the problem of increasing the process time and cost as well as has a high risk of process errors because it integrates vast amount of data from distributed environments. Thus, we propose a metrics for measurement in the area of productivity, process quality and data quality. Also through the evaluation using the proposed metrics, we show that our proposal provides productivity enhancement and process improvement.

  • In this research, we've studied to the software productivity and quality measures and metrics for raise UP the advanced software industry. For the purpose, we've studied relative research and reorganized 74 metrics. Reorganized 74 metrics were developed considering scalability, measurement and acquisition possibility and verified by software development experts. Finally, we've conducted a survey on the high measurement possibility metrics. Data were gathered from 20 software development project. It was found from the result need more efforts for the software development productivity improvement for advanced software industry.

  • In most shipyards, the measurement of 3-dimensional relative position of pipes should be connected in the block depends on the manual operation. It results a very tedious and inefficient procedure, thus the proper measurement system is needed to improve productivity and accuracy. This paper describes the development results of pipe measurement system including system concepts, measuring procedures, system calibration, and its accuracy and productivity. And also, the possibility and things to be improved for application in shipyard are discussed in this paper.

  • It is critical that all companies improve productivity in order to maintain their international competitiveness. The productivity can be explained as a measurement of effectiveness that is calculated by "the ratio of what is produced to what is required to produce it". The goal of this paper is to enhance productivity for a small fast food company mainly through work analysis.   • Productivity measurement of construction machinery is a significant issue faced by many contractors especially those involved in earthwork projects. Traditionally, equipment production rate has been estimated using data available in manufacturers' catalogues, results of previous construction projects, or personal experience and assessments of the site personnel. Actual production rates obtained after the completion of a project demonstrate the fact that most of these methods fail to provide accurate results and as a direct consequence, may lead to unrealistic project cost estimations prepared by the contractors. What makes this more critical is that in most cases, inadequate cost estimations lead the entire project to exceed the initial budget or fall behind the schedule. In this paper, a linear regression method to estimate bulldozer productivity is introduced. This method has been developed using SPSS-16 software package. The presented method is used to estimate the productivity of Komatsu D-155A1 series which is commonly used in many earthmoving operations in Iran. The data required for the numerical analysis has been collected from actual site observation and productivity measurement of 60 pieces of D-155A1 series currently being used in several earthmoving projects in Iran. Comparative analysis of the output data of the presented regression method and the existing productivity tables provided by the manufacturer shows that when compared to the actual productivity data collected on the jobsite, a significant increase in accuracy and a remarkable reduction of data variance can be achieved by using the presented regression method.

  • As buildings becoming higher and more enormous the portion of steel works has been increased, which makes the schedule planning and management more significant. However, in actual construction sites, management is more based on a manager's construction experience than productivity data accumulated in previous projects. Moreover, most of the existing studies also featured a theoretical approach rather than an analysis of data straightforwardly collected in sites. In this study, a steel-erection site was visited to collect productivity data. The study found that there were significant disparities between aboveground work productivity and underground work. However, the productivities of 'first node on ground' and 'second node on ground' were estimated similar. The productivity data collected and factors affecting the productivity will help managers to plan and control their similar steel-erection works. This study will also be beneficial for those performing related studies.

  • As manpower shortage of national construction site is continuing, a manpower of foreign laborers are steadily increasing. The construction industry impacts the purpose for productivity of laborers as labor-intensive industry against different industry. Therefore, there is a need of analysis of foreign laborer's productivity. This study analyzes to use foreign labor's psychological productivity factors as a basic standard by comparing to Korean's. Construction foreign laborers seem to put bigger priority on "accomplishment of task," and "job satisfaction," than Korean workers, according to the response results in Likert 5-point Scale Measurement with 11 kinds of psychological causes in theories regarding productivity factors. Thus, this study expects to use as baseline data for productivity management of construction foreign laborers.

  • The object of this paper is to Study the work measurement which is one of the principal technique in work study for the improvement of Productivity in the foundry industry. Most of domestic mechanical enterprise using the expensive foreign machinerise is inoufficient for the standardization of the operation method and time. Therefore, the improvement of operation and productivity through the introduction of the work measurement is an urgent task. Therefore, this paper is contribute to the improvement of operation and to reduce the loss time through the application of the work measurement based on the case study conducted at W-Foundry Corporation. The summary of this study is follows; 1. The measurement of operation efficiency can be accomplished by the standard time. 2. The detailed causes and counter-proposal of loss time can be established, 3. More than 50% of loss time is attributed to c/p.
