  • The purpose of this study was to find an appropriate approaches for successful aging adapt to Korean older women 's needs. For this purpose, this study did a comparative study between middle-aged and elderly women. Data from the third Korean longitudinal study of aging were analyzed by network analysis and statistical methods. The results were as follows. From network analysis, it was identified the participation difference of productive activities between middle-aged and elderly women according to level of education, subjective heath condition and residential area size. From the multiple regression analysis, voluntary activity, existence of spouse, residential area, family income and level of education significantly affected satisfaction of life quality in middle-aged women while family caregiving, age, religion, residential area, family income and level of education were significant in elderly women's satisfaction of life quality. Based on these results, it was suggested several implications to increase productive activities according to characteristics of Korean middle-aged and elderly women.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare on the productive activities and life satisfaction between rural and urban elderly. Economic activities and caring labor activity had a negative effect on life satisfaction. but, community participation had a positive effect. In other words, the concept of productive activities in life satisfaction has multidimensionality. Therefore, using multiple indicators to measure is inappropriate. And, according to Chow test, coefficients that describe the structure of life satisfaction were different between the elderly living in rural and urban. The self-actualization needs of the elderly can be interpreted as due to be implemented differently, because of the different cultures of urban and rural areas. And, In life satisfaction, we have found that individual volunteer activity is more effective than volunteer through groups.

  • The purpose of this study were to identify factors of successful aging and to suggest a successful aging model of elderly using Rowe & Kahn's model of successful aging. The components of the factors consisted of healthful status, physical·cognitive functions, psychosocial characteristics and productive activities. Data were collected from 2,958 elderly who has spouse and aged 65 above in KOSA Panel. Data were analyzed by Amos program 7.0 version. The statistical techniques were used descriptive statistics χ2 and covariance structural analysis. Major findings of this study were as follows; Healthful status were positively related to increasing effort on physical·cognitive functions as well as psychosocial characteristics. Physical·cognitive functions were positively and directly related to psychosocial characteristics and productive activities. Psychosocial characteristics were positively and directly related to productive activities. Physical·cognitive functions and psychosocial characteristics were increased by receiving a direct and positive effort from healthful status. Productive activities were increased by receiving a direct and positive effort from physical·cognitive functions and psychosocial characteristics. Specific and realistic measures should be prepared for successful aging not only for present elderly but also for the future elderly people. Further research should be continued and encouraged to improve the implications for the successful aging especially in korea.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate successful aging (SA) in elderly individuals and to determine the factors that influence SA. Methods: The subjects included 207 elderly individuals from D city, Korea. The data were obtained between July 1 and August 30, 2008. The participants were assured of anonymity and confidentiality. For the evaluation, Kim & Shin's SA scale, Lawton's instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale, Jon's self-esteem scale, Kee's geriatric depression scale short form-Korean (GDSSF-K), and Hong's productive activities scale were used. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation coefficients; multiple regression analysis was performed using the SPSS/WIN 10.0 program. Results: The maximum score for SA was 34, and the mean score was 22.62. It was found that SA was significantly correlated to IADL, self-esteem, depression, and productive activity. Depression was the most powerful predictor of SA and it accounted for 40.6% of the total variance in SA. Self-esteem, productive activity, living situation, economic status, and age together accounted for 62.1% of the total variation in SA. Conclusion: Depression, self-esteem, and productive activity were identified as variables that influence SA. On the basis of these results, we conclude that nurses should assist elderly individuals in order to facilitate SA. Moreover, individualized nursing management strategies must be developed in order to facilitate SA.

  • The purpose of study is to compare the level of participation of the elderly people in the activity of production between Korea and Canada and to identify the factors related to the participation of the elderly people in the activity of production between Korea and Canada. In order to conduct a comparative culture study two data sets were used; one was the 1999 Survey of Time Use collected by Korean Statistics Office and the other was 1998 Survey of Time Use collected by Canadian Statistics Office. Many countries have been collected a time use survey and used to study labor, welfare, and culture. Total number of 17,730 Korean and 2,729 Canadian between 55 and 84 were included to analyze the data. It is clear from the results that older people engage in various productive behaviors, particularly when the definition of activities is broadened to include unpaid work. It is also clear the overall productive contributions are higher among older Koreans than among older Canadians. While the focus in this study has been strictly on productive activities, the aging well literature suggests that the ability to remain independent in later life is enhanced through continued engagement in productive activities. It is thus critical that we better understand the nature of later-life activities and in particular the wide-ranging contributions made by older people. This is an important area of further exploration.

  • The object of this study is the introduction and the application of Ecological Footprint(EF) for sustainability of regional people activities. It is a tool for the evaluation of specific projects through various lifestyles or consumption to area of broad policy and budgets. But in Korea there is no assessment for consumption level of human activities by EF. Therefore this study try to analyse ecologically productive land for human activities of Cheju-island in order to assess the sustainability in Cheju and compares with another industrized countries. We analyze the human activities level of Cheju-island then the EF is about 0.9(ha/cap). This value is not more than another countries like Canada and United States. EF assists in choosing technologies, policies and Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) which can perform a certain task with the smallest ecological footprint. It will help society to avoid collapse and move towards sustainability and ecological efficiency.

  • The manufacture of riboflavine fortified Dwen-Jang has been tried with an exceedingly riboflavine productive Aspergillus oryzae #612 mutant which has been developed by the authors. Both the rice and barley koji of this mutant and Aspergillus sojae have been prepared. Their riboflavine production, saccharifying and protease activities have begin compared The riboflavine fortified Dwen-Jang has been manufactured using the barley koji of riboflavine productive mutant. Their riboflavine content and qualities have been studied comparing with an ordinary Dwen-Jang which has been prepared with the barley kojo of A. sojae strain. The following results have been obtained. (1) The baley koji was superior in riboflavine production and protease activity, inferior in saccharifying ability than rice koji both with A. oryzae #612 and A. sojae. (2) In barley koji, the mutant, A. oryzae #612, produces 1.5 times riboflavine than A. sojae and shows stronger saccharifying and protease activities than the latter. (3) The riboflavine fortified Dwen-Jaug manufactured contained $5.2{\gamma}/g$ of riboflavine, about 1.5 times that of A. sojae. The higher contents of free sugar and free amjno nitrogen have been observed than the ordinary Dwen-Jang manufactured with A. sojae.

  • In this study, we challenge recent apocalyptic rhetoric about idle, burdensome, and dependent older people. Our primary objective is to examine and compare the productive activities of older adults in both Korea and Canada using a broader definition of productivity that included household work. Another objective is to identify and compare the factors related to the participation of household work of older adults in both countries. In order to conduct a comparative culture study two data sets were used; one was the 1999 Survey of Time Use collected by Korean Statistics Office and the other was 1998 Survey of Time Use collected by Canadian Statistics Office. It is clear from the results that older people engage in productive behaviors, particularly when the definition of activities is broadened to include unpaid work. However, it is also clear the productive contributions in terms of household work ale lower among older Koreans than among older Canadians.
