A Design for a Fuzzy Logic based Frequency Controller for Efficient wind Farm Operation (풍력발전단지의 효율적 운영을 위한 퍼지로직 기반 주파수 제어기 설계)

  • Recently wind energy penetration into power systems has increased. Wind power, as a renewable energy source, plays a different role in the power system compared to conventional power generation units. As long as only single and small wind power units are installed in the power system, wind power does not influence power system operation and can easily be integrated. However, when wind power penetration reaches a significantly high level and conventional power production units are substituted, the impact of wind power on the power system becomes noticeable and must be handled. The connection of large wind turbines and wind farms to the grid has a large impact on grid stability. The electrical power system becomes more vulnerable to and dependent on wind energy production, and therefore there is an increased concern about the large wind turbines impact on grid stability. In this work, a new type of fuzzy logic controller for the frequency control of wind farms is proposed and its performance is verified using SimWindFarm toolbox which was developed as part of the Aeolus FP7 project.

  • Sweet and taste modifying proteins are natural alternatives to synthetic sweeteners and flavor enhancers, and have been used for centuries in different countries. Use of these proteins is limited due to less stability and availability. However, recent advances in biotechnology have enhanced their availability. These include production of sweet and taste modifying proteins in transgenic organisms, and protein engineering to improve their stability. Their increased availability in the food, beverage or medicinal industries as sweeteners and flavor enhancers will reduce the dependence on artificial alternatives. Production of transgenic plants using sweet and taste modifying genes, is an interesting alternative to the extraction of these products from natural source. In this review paper, we briefly describe various sweet and taste modifying proteins (such as thaumatin, monellin, brazzein, curculin and miraculin), their properties, and their application for plant development using biotechnological approaches.

Genetic Stability of the Integrated Structural Gene of Guamerin in Recombinant Pichia pastoris

  • Genetic chracterstics of the structural gene of guamerin (a novel elastase inhibitor from Korean leech), integrated into the HIS4 locus of chromosomal DNA of Pichia pastoris along with the $\alpha$-factor leader sequence, were investigated. In the selected clone from candidates, two copies of the integration cassette including the structural gene copies of the integration cassette including the structural gene of guamerin were found in the integration site of the chromosomal DNA of P.pastoris. It was demonstrated that the integrated structural gene of guamerin was stable up to about 70 generations in the relay flask culture. Then, a high-cell-density culture could be fulfilled easily by DO-stat fed-batch culture, in which the cell growth and the recombinant guamerin production reached about 250 of OD600nm and 260 mg/l, respectively. Finally, it was revealed that the DNA sequence of the integrated structural gene of guamerin in P. pastoris was maintained correctly in the end of production cells of relay flask culture and high-cell-density culture.

A Study of Thermodynamical Reaction Path in Fe-Cr-X Alloys at High Temperature Corrosion Environments (고온 부식환경에 대한 Fe-Cr-X 합금의 열역학적 반응경로에 관한 연구)

  • The structure of the scale formed on the surface of Fe - Cr - X alloys exposed to 1143K high sulfidation($Ps_2$ = 1.11$\times$$10^-7$ atm, $Po_2$ = 3.11$\times$$10^-20$ atm) or sulfidation/oxidation(($Ps_2$= 1.06$\times$$10^-7$ atm, ($Po_2$ = 3.11$\times$$10^-18$ atm) environment has been observed and analysed using XRD, SEM/EDS. To investigate the possibility of protective film formed on the surface of the alloys, Aluminium, Nickel were selected as alloying elements. Thermodynamic phase stability diagram was used to predict the reaction path of scale formed on Fe - Cr - X alloys. Parabolic rate constant($K_p$) value with 6wt% Al in Fe - 25Cr alloy decreased significantly compared with the Fe - 25Cr alloy without 6wt% Al. Since thin layer of defect free sulfide film, (Al, Cr)Sx, was formed at the alloy/scale interface. Fe - rich sulfide scale at outer layer and Cr - rich sulfide scale containing porosity at inner layer of Fe - 25Cr alloy have been observed. The reaction path for these scales could be predicted by the thermodynamic stability diagram.

Immobilization of Thermomyces lanuginosus Xylanase on Aluminum Hydroxide Particles Through Adsorption: Characterization of Immobilized Enzyme

  • Xylanase plays important roles in a broad range of industrial production as a biocatalyst, and its applications commonly require immobilization on supports to enhance its stability. Aluminum hydroxide, a carrier material with high surface area, has the advantages of simple and low-cost preparation and resistance to biodegradation, and can be potentially used as a proper support for xylanase immobilization. In this work, xylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus was immobilized on two types of aluminum hydroxide particles (gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3) through adsorption, and the properties of the adsorbed enzymes were studied. Both particles had considerable adsorptive capacity and affinity for xylanase. Xylanase retained 75% and 64% of the original catalytic activities after adsorption to gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3. Both the adsorptions improved pH and thermal stability, lowered activation energy, and extended lifespan of the immobilized enzyme, as compared with the free enzyme. Xylanase adsorbed on gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3 retained 71% and 64% of its initial activity, respectively, after being recycled five times. These results indicated that aluminum hydroxides served as good supports for xylanase immobilization. Therefore, the adsorption of xylanase on aluminum hydroxide particles has promising potential for practical production.

Long-Term Stability for Co-Electrolysis of CO2/Steam Assisted by Catalyst-Infiltrated Solid Oxide Cells

  • This study investigated the long-term durability of catalyst(Pd or Fe)-infiltrated solid oxide cells for $CO_2$/steam co-electrolysis. Fuel-electrode supported solid oxide cells with dimensions of $5{\times}5cm^2$ were fabricated, and palladium or iron was subsequently introduced via wet infiltration (as a form of PdO or FeO solution). The metallic catalysts were employed in the fuel-electrode to promote $CO_2$ reduction via reverse water gas shift reactions. The metal-precursor particles were well-dispersed on the fuel-electrode substrate, which formed a bimetallic alloy with Ni embedded on the substrate during high-temperature reduction processes. These planar cells were tested using a mixture of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ to measure the electrochemical and gas-production stabilities during 350 h of co-electrolysis operations. The results confirmed that compared to the Fe-infiltrated cell, the Pd-infiltrated cell had higher stabilities for both electrochemical reactions and gas-production given its resistance to carbon deposition.

  • The model ship of this study, the Baek-Kyung fisheries training ship of Pukyong National University, has a length between perpendiculars of 85 meters, making it not subject to the IMO maneuverability standards. However, understanding the maneuvering characteristics of the vessel is essential for safe navigation. In this regard, this study was conducted to analyze the results from the sea trials of the model ship conducted in accordance with the IMO maneuverability standards. The results of the turning tests met the standards well while in the zig-zag tests, the first overshoot angle exceeded the standard in the 10°/10° test; however, such results met with a difference of 1.8° in the 20°/20° test. Additionally, using the course-stability discrimination formula, the calculated value was -0.0051, indicating unstable course-stability. The results of the stopping tests met the standards well. It is hoped that the analyzed maneuvering characteristics of the model ship from the study results will contribute to the safety of ship navigation.

Production, Partial Purification and Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Laccase from Pleurotus ostreatus (Pleurotus ostreatus가 생산하는 Laccase의 부분정제 및 효소적 특성)

  • The production media, partial purification and the enzymatic characteristics of laccase from Pleurotus ostreatus were investigated. Among various media tried the double strength onion media showed much higher production of laccase compared to glucose and/or CMC added media. The laccase from Pleurotus ostreatus has the optimum pH of 5.94 for the activity and appears to be stable at relatively broad pH spectrum (4.7-8.7). The experiments on the temperature stability shows that above 90% activity could be preserved after holding at $30^{\circ}C$ for 40 min., 60% activity was remained after 40 min. at $50^{\circ}C$. The Km value of the laccase from Pleurotus ostreatus was estimated to be 3.209mM and the molecular weight of laccase was estimated to be 55,000 by SDS-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

  • For domestic aircraft industry, not mass production of components is limited, small production scale of the order is made by part because many kinds of hundreds of thousands of kinds of small quantity batch production system are taking. But the high reliability and stability are required during the processing because they require high precision parts are required. It is found that when C-axis rotation speed was increased, the diameter of the cutting tool decreased with increasing surface roughness, while the turn-mail feed rate was increased with increasing the surface roughness.

  • This paper describes a procedure to design a hovering flight controller for a model helicopter using LQG theory. Parameters of the model helicopter in hover are obtained using direct measurements and calculations proposed by other research. A feedback co is by using digital LQG theory. First, a full state feedback controller is designed to the discretized system taking desirable transient response and other assumptions into account. Then a full-state estimator is designed and revised until desirable response is obtained while global stability is maintained. Performance of the controller is tested by computer simulations. Experiments have been performed using a 3-degree-of-freedom gimbal that holds the model helicopter, and the controller exhibited stable hover capability.
