Differences in Reactions to Sales Promotions: Superior or Inferior to Your Product?

  • This study examines whether product promotions are influenced by the market standing of promoted products, using social comparison theory (upward versus downward comparisons). It is hypothesized that people in possession of a product that is inferior to the one on promotion express less discomfort about the promotion and use the information more than do people in possession of a superior product. People in possession of an inferior product may also exhibit more positive attitudes toward the product on promotion, but may show poorer attitudes toward their own possessed product than do people with a superior product. This is because people in an inferior socioeconomic position show a strong motivation to improve themselves through upward social comparison, whereas people in a superior socioeconomic position maintain a strong sense of superiority in downward social comparison, which suggests strong endowment effects. The findings mainly support the hypotheses, and suggest that sales promotions are more effective for people who currently own an inferior product, but not for people with a superior product, who have a strong motivation to maintain their sense of superiority. The findings also imply that, in order to attract consumers in the superior market, managers for inferior products need to turn to methods other than sales promotions, which may include introducing a new brand or sub-brand, or emphasizing luxury and modern features. In contrast, managers for superior products may emphasize product functions and attributes of superior products in their promotions, as people with inferior products may consider such information as benefits of the superior products.

  • 본 연구는 지식경영역량의 신제품 개발 과정에서의 역할을 설명하고, 지식습득역량에서 지식적용역량으로 연결되는 과정을 통해 선두이점과 신제품품질의 우월성, 그리고 신제품 성과 간에 관계를 규명하기 위한 연구이다. 지금까지 지식기반 연구는 지식의 정의, 지식의 유형 구분, 지식과 정보 간의 차이 등에 대한 연구로 국한되어왔다. 본 연구는 기업의 신제품 지식경영활동 중 발생하는 지식습득과 지식적용역량을 전략적 변수로서 간주하여, 지식경영역량의 선행변수와 결과변수를 조사하였다. 지식기반이론과 source-position-performance(SPP)구조를 바탕으로, 가치창출에 원천으로서 지식의 유형은 지식경영역량의 개발에 중요한 역할을 하며, 이러한 지식경영역량은 포지션상의 우위를 가져와 신제품 성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 제시하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해 국내 하이테크 산업에 속하는 기업들 중 신제품 프로젝트에 참여한 제품 개발팀의 과장급 이상 종사원을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 구조방정식모형을 사용하여 가설을 검증한 결과 7개의 가설 중 신제품 지식의 복잡성과 지식적용역량의 관계(H1b)를 제외한 모든 가설이 통계적으로 유의한 결과를 보였다. 본 연구의 공헌은 SPP 구조를 기반으로 하여 지식의 유형과 포지션상 우위를 연결하는 매개변수로서 지식경영역량을 소개하였고, 실증 분석을 통해 신제품 혁신 이론에 지식경영역량이 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 보였다는 것이다. 또한 신제품 개발 성과를 향상하기 위해서는 신제품 개발 팀장들의 역할 즉, 팀 구성원들의 개별 지식 접근능력을 기르고, 그것을 적용하기 위한 능력을 개발하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 제시하였다는 점은 실무적으로 의의가 있다.

Maximum product of spacings under a generalized Type-II progressive hybrid censoring scheme

  • This paper proposes a new estimation method based on the maximum product of spacings for estimating unknown parameters of the three-parameter Weibull distribution under a generalized Type-II progressive hybrid censoring scheme which guarantees a constant number of observations and an appropriate experiment duration. The proposed approach is appropriate for a situation where the maximum likelihood estimation is invalid, especially, when the shape parameter is less than unity. Furthermore, it presents the enhanced performance in terms of the bias through the Monte Carlo simulation. In particular, the superiority of this approach is revealed even under the condition where the maximum likelihood estimation satisfies the classical asymptotic properties. Finally, to illustrate the practical application of the proposed approach, the real data analysis is conducted, and the superiority of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simple goodness-of-fit test.

  • Many researches have concluded that product advantage or superiority is the most important factor for the commercial success of new products. However, the specific dimensions of product advantage have not been studied as yet. Based on a survey of newly introduced products in recent years, we suggest the eight dimensions of quality of new product: function, time, limitation, usability, problem prevention, economy, maintainability, nativeness. The dimensions and their constituents are explained with examples.

  • In this paper, an improved lower bound on the burst-error correcting capability of th ecyclic product code is presented and through the analysis of this new bound clustered cyclic product (CCP abbr.)code is proposed. The CCP code, to improve the burst-error correcting capability, combines the idea of clustering and the transmission method of cyclic product code. That is, a cluster which is defined in this paper as a group of consecutive code symbols is employed as a new transmission unit to the code array transmission of cyclic product code. the burst-error correcting capability of the CCP code is improved without a loss in the random-error correcting capability and performance comparison in the digital video camera records (DVCR) system shows the superiority of the proposed CCP code over conventional product codes.

  • The prices of chemical products are fluctuated by several factors. The chemical companies can't predict and be ready to all of these changes, so they are exposed to the risk of a profit fluctuation. But they can reduce this risk by making a well-diversified product portfolio. This problem can be thought as the optimization of the product portfolio. We assume that the profits come from the 'spread' between a naphtha and a chemical product. We calculate a mean and a variation of each spread and develop an automatic module to calculate the optimal portion of each product. The theory is based on the Markowitz portfolio management. It maximizes the expected return while minimizing the volatility. At last we draw an investment selection curve to compare each alternative and to demonstrate the superiority. And we suggest that an investment selection curve can be a decision-making tool.

명품성의 결정요인에 관한 연구: 제품속성과 명품성을 중심으로 (A Study on the Determinants of Luxuriousness: With Focus on Product Attributes and Luxuriousness)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 명품을 학문적으로 정의하고, 소비자의 명품의 구매의도에 영향을 미치는 명품성의 결정요인에 대하여 제품속성과 인지 구조적 관계를 규명하는 것이다. 명품성은 소비자에게 핵심가치를 제공하는 기능적 혜택, 경험적 혜택, 상징적 혜택, 배타적 혜택을 유인하며 소비자의 심리적 만족에 미치는 영향요인이다. 기존의 명품성 요인의 척도 개념으로는 소비자가 명품을 선호하는 이유에 대하여 충분히 설명을 하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 소비자가 지각하는 명품이 무엇이고, 명품성이 무엇인지를 마케팅관점에서 개념화하기 위하여 선행이론을 바탕으로 연구모형을 새롭게 제시하였다. 제품속성은 기능적 단서(품질, 디자인), 상징적 단서(브랜드, 가격)로 구분하고, 명품성 요인은 우월성, 희소성, 차별성, 전통성으로 구분하였다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 이론적 개념을 바탕으로 명품의 제품속성과 명품성이 소비자의 구매의도에 미치는 영향 관계를 실증적으로 분석하고자, 총 282개의 표본을 대상으로 통계분석을 실시하였다. 조사대상제품은 명품 소비자를 대상으로 사전 조사된 B자동차로 하였다. 구조방정식 모형의 분석을 이용한 가설 검정결과, 제품속성과 명품성의 관계에서 제품속성의 기능적 단서인 품질은 명품성의 우월성과 차별성에 유의한 영향을 미치며, 디자인은 희소성에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 제품속성의 상징적 단서인 브랜드는 전통성에 유의한 영향을 미치며, 가격은 우월성과 희소성에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 제품속성은 구매의도에 부분적으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 또한 명품성은 구매의도에 부분적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구에서 제시된 명품과 명품성의 구조적 개념은 새로운 연구모형을 구축하는데 이론적 기반을 제공할 것이며, 마케팅 관점에서 명품성의 결정요인은 소비자의 심리적 내적동기 요인을 확인하는데 실무적으로 도움이 될 것이다.

  • Many researches have concluded that product advantage or superiority is the most important factor for the commercial success of new products. However, the specific dimensions of product advantage have not been studied as yet. In order to know what kind of product attributes have been major determinants of commercial success, telecommunications winning products from 1985 to 1997 in the Korean market were examined. As results of the analysis, the determinants are classified into function, aesthetics, economy, safety, usability, reliability, brand image, assurance, distribution channel, advertisement, DEF(design for the environment). This study augmented the data set through questionnaire survey to marketing professor in University. The results will be a cue to future of new product development.

명품 구매과정에서 고객만족과 추천의향에 영향을 미치는 보상 및 로열티 프로그램의 분석 - 고급 수입차 매장을 중심으로 - (Analysis of Reward and Royalty Programs Affecting Customer Satisfaction and Recommendations in the Purchase Process in Luxury Goods)

  • This study analyzed what premium features significantly affect customer satisfaction and their recommendation, and what factors significantly affect product attributes. In the process, first, the loyalty program and the customer compensation program were studied to determine the impact of the customer satisfaction and recommendation. The study analyzed that quality and design of product properties had significant effects on all factors, but the brand was not significantly affected. Second, while superiority, differentiation and scarcity of luxury items are significant to customer satisfaction but superiority is only significant in relation to recommendation intention. Third, the preceding study shows that the customer compensation program has a significant impact on sales growth, but the study found that it was not for imported luxury car customers. Fourth, if the royalties program is low in awareness, it has been analyzed that the scarcity and customer satisfaction relationships among luxury goods have been adjusted. On the contrary, if there is a high level of awareness, it is analyzed that there is a control effect customer satisfaction and differentiation among luxury brands. In the conclusion, in order to satisfy customers at the import luxury car market, the differentiation of luxury goods by standard index must be strengthened and the brand must be strengthened among the attributes of the product. In addition, by raising awareness of the royalties program, the relationship between differentiation and customer satisfaction can be enhanced.
