  • The goal of this research was to study the effects of the Mathematical Problem Generating Program on problem solving ability and learning attitude. The experiment was carried out between two classes. One class was applied with the experimental program (treatment group), and the other continued with normal teaching and learning methods (comparative group). In this study, two 5th grade elementary classes participated in Seoul city. In this study, the students were tested their problem solving abilities by the IPSP test and learning attitude by the Korean Education Development Institute (KEDI) before and after use of the program. The collected results were t-tested to find any meaningful changes. The results showed the followings. First, use of the mathematical generating program showed meaningful progressive results in problem solving ability. Second, the students that used the program showed positive results in learning attitude. In conclusion, learning mathematics using the problem generating method helps students deeper understand and solve complex problems. In addition, problem solving abilities can be improved and the attitude towards mathematics can be changed while students are using an active and positive approach in problem solving processes.

  • In the process of establishing the principle of genetics, Mendel discovered problems based on various observations. Mendel's scientific thinking ability can be effective if this ability is embedded in gifted science education programs. The study aims to develop a science gifted education program utilizing Mendel's scientific thinking ability shown in the principles of genetics and examine students' changes in scientific thinking ability before and after the program implementation. For the program development, first, the characteristics of Mendel's scientific thinking ability in the process of establishing the principle of genetics were investigated and extracted the major elements of inquiry. Second, the science gifted education programs was developed by applying the inquiry elements from the Mendel's Law. The program was implemented with 19 students of $7^{th}$, $8^{th}$ graders who attend the science gifted education center affiliated with university during July 2011. The Mendel's scientific thinking ability was classified into induction, deduction, and integration. The elements of inquiry extracted from the Mendel's scientific thinking include making observation, puzzling observation, proposing causal questions, generating hypothesis, drawing inference, designing experiment, gathering and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making generalization. With applying these elements, the program was developed with four phases: $1^{st}$ - problem finding; $2^{nd}$ - hypothesis generating; $3^{rs}$ - hypothesis testing and $4^{th}$ - problem solving. After implementation, students' changes in scientific thinking ability were measured. The findings from the study are as follows: First, students' abilities of problem finding is significantly (p<.05) increased. Second, students' abilities of hypothesis generating is significantly (pp<.05) increased.

  • Generating chord score based on melody is essential for composition and arrangement, while it is picky for amateurs who do not have harmonics knowledges. To solve this problem, we developed automatic chord score generating program, ACGP. Based on genetic algorithm, it successfully reflects diverse hormonic factors and the mood of the music. User interface was also implemented so that anyone can use the program conveniently. Additional analysis was conducted to prove the utility of ACGP.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine (1) problem solving processes, and (2) the relationship between problem solving abilities and emotional stability in preschool children. Sixty children, 4, 5, and 6 years of age were selected as subjects from 2 kindergartens. Their problem solving abilities were assessed with the Sink and Float activity and their emotional stability was measured with the House-Tree-Person test. General abilities for problem solving developed with increase in children's age. That is, age differences were found in all 3 problem solving processes of generating, testing, and applying hypotheses. No differences between sexes or kindergarten program were found. Children's emotional stability was significantly related to problem solving ability. While the relationship between emotional stability and processes of generating and applying hypotheses was not significant, emotionally stable children performed better in free play.

  • Programming-in-the-Large refers to software development environment and includes the organization and representation of a system structure, module decomposition, component dependence analysis, seperate compilation, subsystem and composition identification. The most intricate problem in this environment is the mastery of the structural complexity of large software systems. Ada programming language is tailored to the needs for building of large, integrated software systems from many program units. The visibility graph generating model presented in this paper transforms Ada source program into a visibility graph with nodes for program units and edges for visibility relations among program units. The system description in terms of program units and their visibility relations produced by this model can be utilized for some apects of Programming-in-the-Large environment and also assists designeers, programmers, integrators and maintainers in defining, understanding and exploring the structure of evolving software systems. The model designed and implemented in Ada programming language runs on PCs and will remain useful both in practice and as experimental tool.

  • An economic model is developed for determining optimal locations of screening inspection stations in a multistage production system. The effect of screening inspection on the production rate is explicitly considered, and a fixed cost for maintaining an inspection station is assumed. The product is allowed to have multiple defects, each of which may be inspected at any inspection station after the defect-generating operation. The problem is formulated as a mixed 0-1 linear program which offers the advantage of versatility in handling various system constraints.

  • This paper presents development of program for generator maintenance scheduling. The maintenance scheduling of generating units is a dynamic discrete combinatorial optimization problem with constraints to determine the optimal maintenance periods of each generating units for a given planning periods. The developed program is designed so as to provide the maintenance schedule satisfying the operating reserve margin levelization and the procurement of proper reliability. In order to verify the effectiveness of the developed program, the numerical study has been performed with the practical data in 2005.

  • A grid generation program for specific problems is introduced. The program allows users to easily generate grid system for specific geometry such as an airfoil, cylinder, wedge, flat plate, and nozzle. Generating grid system for those problems can be proceeded with minimum user inputs such as geometry-defining parameters and grid-defining parameters. By using this program learning stage for preprocessing of CFD application can be efficiently shorten and novice students can learn and acquire experience by trying out grid generation and CFD solution by themselves.

  • A competitive generating company (GENCO) could maximize its payoff by optimizing its generation assets. This paper considers the GENCO's arbitrage problem using price-based unit commitment (PBUC). The GENCO could consider arbitrage opportunities in purchases from qualifying facilities (QFs) as well as simultaneous trades with spots markets for energy, ancillary services, emission, and fuel. Given forecasted hourly market prices for each market, the GENCO's generating asset arbitrage problem is formulated as a mixed integer program (MIP) and solved by a branch-and-cut algorithm. A GENCO with 54 thermal and 12 combined-cycle units is considered for analyzing the proposed formulation. The proposed case studies illustrate the significance of simultaneous arbitrage by applying PBUC to multi-commodity markets.
